Welcome to issue 8 of CDi. Since our last edition, at the end of 2021, there has been no let up on the changes and challenges we all face. Covid-19 is still present, as we are learning to find the best ways to live with it. People are at the forefront of our daily lives, whether it be the devasting impact on those living in Ukraine or the challenges businesses face with recruitment as they look to grasp opportunities that have not been around for a couple of years.

MAM - Autonet

Many of our protocols put in place during the pandemic remain in place, to ensure our workspace is safe for colleagues, and that we can continue to provide the level of service that you expect, in a safe manner. We continue to follow a cleaning and sanitation regime within the workplace, including all vans and collection counters.

To find out more please reach out to your sales contact, or contact our Head of IT, MartinGraham@cd-group.com

One of our priorities this year has been to continue strengthening our commercial offering with an emphasis on quality UK or European based manufacturers and remanufacturers. This allows us to shorten supply chains and make them more robust in these uncertain times, whilst also supporting local/regional businesses where we can, reflecting our status as an independent Irish owned business. Within this Braking remains a key focus. To support our traditional offering, we have continued to strengthen our Brembo programme, which continues to be well received in the market. Alongside this we have added Brake Engineering friction and calipers, a good quality, well priced programme, featuring European manufactured pads and UK remanufactured calipers. The caliper programme is also supported by a full Shaftec range. We have put considerable investment in to strengthening our Bilstein offering with a full range extension of Blue Print friction, and the addition of their Blue Print & Febi hydraulics programme, significantly widening our ranges, and increasing our competitiveness on German applications. On ABS we have extended our Intermotor range, which is very competitively priced. This is all supported by the development of our Bosch ABS & friction programmes, reflecting our key partner status with Bosch. Collectively with Apec, this gives us a market leading braking offering with the biggest quality braking offering in our market. Filtration has also been strengthened by the Commercial Team. Our core programme is built around the Mann and Hengst brands, and alongside this we have expanded both our Bosch and Blue Print ‘all makes’ ranges, again giving us a market leading offering. Our focus on commitment to stock range and depth has also pushed on this year outside of braking and filtration with the team adding a huge number of new parts to stock in the Gates, Bosch, Blue Print & Febi brands and we have enjoyed a successful launch of the Nissens brand of thermal products. In the last 18 months alone, we have increased our stock holding by €2.5m as we continue to enhance our range and availability offering for customers. Customer service remains another key area, with a particular focus on our online channels. Over the last few months, we have released some developments to improve your experience on our online portal. I am most excited though, to announce that our DVSE catalogue, or ‘red screen’ is back! This is now fully integrated to show our stock and your price while working off TecDoc data for catalogue enquiries. This has been brilliantly received by those who have spoken to their account manager and updated their user access, allowing them to avail of all the updated benefits, so I can only encourage you to do so also. With the ability to check stock, price, and order, including the ability to soon upload orders via a csv file, this really does make life so much easier especially with it offering a market leading catalogue answer and brand offering. This year, whilst we embrace a new normal, it has been great to welcome back some events that we haven’t had the opportunity to experience since 2019. Our training vehicle, MechanExpert, has been back out on the road again with 6 roadshows over May and June. With a 3 further roadshows being finalised for September and plans to be present at the Auto Trade Expo in October, it is exciting times for our MechanExpert team. Alongside longtime supporters of the concept, Brembo, Brake Engineering, Sachs and Nissens have already signed up this year and discussions are ongoing with other premium brands that we have partnered with. If you are keen to host a MechanExpert roadshow please reach out to your Account Manager, who will be happy to advise, and for those keen to attend any roadshow simply register through the MechanExpert website. If you have any comments, or suggestions on how we can better support your business it would be great to have a chat to discuss it further. Please feel free to reach out and let me know. In the meantime, I wish you a pleasant summer and thank you for your ongoing support. Terry Knox Managing Director, CD Group TerryKnox@cd-group.com

cooling

Radiators

Heat exchanger - essential for engine thermal control The radiator is placed in the front of the vehicle, often attached to other heat exchangers, such as the intercooler or condenser. The radiator is essential for the cooling of combustion engines. In such engines, there may be as many as 4,000 petrol explosions per minute, each generating temperatures of up to 1,500°C. The cooling liquid, which is circulating through a cooling jacket, cools the engine block, as well as pistons, valves, gaskets, rings, engine head, and other elements of the engine. The circulating coolant receives the combustion heat. Flowing through the radiator, it exchanges the heat with atmospheric air.

clutch

CLUTCH GUIDE TUBES Clutch systems are known as a "dry" system and even the smallest leak of oil in the area might damage its capacity to transmit motion from the engine to the gearbox. Also, the metal part of the Guide Tube oil seal, is deputy to ensure the clutch bearing travel, granting it smooth axial movement that avoids many malfunctions related to vibration or travel of the clutch pedal. Due to this, checking the conditions and changing the Guide Tube oil seal during the clutch maintenance is fundamental in order to avoid further damage. If traces of wear are appearing on the metal part of the Guide Tube, if a leakage appears in the clutch bell, then the Guide Tube oil seal needs to be changed.

Timing Chain Kit for camshaft, with guide rails and chain tensioner

Ask your Sales contact for more information

Part No: F30349 Description: BMW, Mini (N47)

Vehicle Repairs. We've Got What it Takes. The timing chain is an integral part of the combustion engine. As a connecting element between crankshaft and camshaft, it ensures precise synchronisation and often drives other components as well. If the camshaft and crankshaft do not run synchronously, engine performance is greatly reduced and engine management errors occur. If the timing chain becomes long or very worn, it can skip or even break. This can result in major engine damage. In the chain drive sector, febi offers a wide range of timing chain kits in addition to individual components. These include all the individual parts required for professional replacement. In addition to the timing chains, these also include chain tensioners, tensioner rails, slide rails, and guide rails.

electric vehicle

Broad range of Bosch cabin filters for electric vehicles Annual replacement generates good revenues for workshops – even with electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles •

It is recommended to replace cabin filters prior to the pollen season

Air quality inside the cabin is of increasing importance

Bosch FILTER+ provides effective protection against fine dust, allergens and bacteria

Last year, the numbers of newly registered electric vehicles has risen dynamically due to government incentives, the expansion of the charging infrastructure and a growing environmental consciousness. As a result, electric cars and plug-in hybrids are also of increasing importance for workshops. Featuring a market coverage exceeding 90 percent, the Bosch range includes cabin filters for most electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles on the European market. In view of the changing aftermarket business concerning electric vehicles, the broad Bosch range of cabin filters provides workshops with good chances for additional turnovers. Cabin filters protect the vehicle interior and the vehicle occupants against fine dust, aerosols, bad smells, allergens and bacteria – even in case of electric vehicles. Bosch recommends replacing them ever 15 000 kilometers or at least once a year, especially prior to the pollen and hay fever seasons.

Bosch cabin filters for increased comfort and health protection As discussions on nitrogen oxides, ozone and fine dusts in cities around the world continue, the air quality inside the cabin is also of increasing importance. Cabin filters with an activated-carbon layer ensure increased comfort and health protection inside the vehicle cabin. Specially matched filter layers of Bosch activated-carbon filters reliably absorb harmful and foul-smelling gases and filter the air separating pollen and fine dust. On top of this, FILTER+ also provides additional protection for allergic sufferers. Equipped with a special anti-allergy layer, it even lastingly neutralizes allergens and bacteria. Moreover, it also efficiently separates fine dust down to 2.5 micrometers in size. This allows reducing allergic reactions of vehicle occupants such as sneezing, irritated, reddened or watering eyes – especially during the pollen season. In addition to this health protection, Bosch cabin filters also reduce the amount of deposits on the air conditioning system thus supporting its energy-efficient operation. Including the broad range for electric and hybrid vehicles, Bosch offers workshops more than 600 different types of cabin filters thus achieving a market coverage of 95 percent. Adding new vehicle applications, this range is annually expanded. Using high-quality materials and by means of thorough processing, Bosch ensures consistently high product quality. This results in cabin filters optimally fulfilling their tasks.

plugs

Bosch Platinum Spark Plug

Equipped with a platinum firing pin at the center electrode: Bosch Platinum spark plugs are developed to the same high quality as original equipment and engineered for high performance in gasoline engines. A specifically developed centre electrode made of iridium provides first-class ignitability for high performance. A highly heat-conductive centre electrode provide a high wear resistance. Factory-set electrode gap ensures a hassle free plug replacement.

Much more than just a starting aid: Modern

glow plugs do not only preheat the engine during the start-up, they also post-glow. That is, they remain active although the engine is already running. In this manner, they ensure efficient and fuel-economic engine operation even in stopand-go or city traffic.

FRONT CAMERA CALIBRATION

Advantages at a glance •

Prompt calibration of new vehicle models as the digital panels are available much sooner Less space and logistic effort for the hardware of the panels Depiction with a projector produces significantly less reflection compared to screen technology Saving time thanks to the easy way of refe- rence panel selection with the remote control (Honda, for example requires three different ways of positioning of the same reference panel for one calibration procedure). The combination of the selected input and output devices (Apple TV & projector) provide the access to further applications and large- format means of depiction such as training videos, technical videos, corporate communi- cation or diagnostic data, e.g. HGS Data. One person only required for spring-supported height adjustment of the cross member Option to adjust to different camera and radar systems Base support with recesses for extremely low positioning of the angular adjustment plate Upgradeable at any time Documentation of adjustment/calibration as hard-copy printout and in the Car History Excellent measuring accuracy Compatible with the diagnostic devices of the mega macs family App-supported alignment of the CSC-Tool to the vehicle Electronic distance measurement Electric height adjustment of reference panel Compatible with the comprehensive extensions of calibration processes

• • •

• • • • • • •

CSC-Tool Digital The new CSC-Tool Digital is the space-saving alternative to the CSC-Tool SE: The large- format calibration targets for front cameras are provided digitally by Hella Gutmann and projected onto the projection surface of the CSC-Tool in the workshop via the associated short-throw projector. This has another advantage: The panels are available much sooner enabling new vehicle models to be calibrated without delay. The digital calibration targets are obtained via the CSC-Tool Digital App, which can be easily downloaded from the Apple app store. The digital calibration panels are transmitted to the projector via Apple TV box, which is included in the delivery contents and which is fixed to the upper edge of the screen. The required reference panels are controlled and selected via remote control. The reference panels are purchased using the in-app checkout process.

BREMBO GUIDELINES FOR FITTING AND MAINTENANCE: TWO PIECE BRAKE DISCS One of the leading trends that is affecting the automotive industry is the shift towards environmental sustainability. One of Brembo’s solutions for sustainability is the twopiece brake disc range containing floating, riveted and co-cast options, which has real benefits compared to an integral (one piece) brake disc. The two-piece solutions, are manufactured with an aluminium or steel hub and a cast iron braking surface. The aluminium or steel hub guarantees a reduction of about 15% -30%in the weight of the disc, compared to an integrated ( 1 piece ) disc of the same size. By reducing the weight of a disc, this leads to a reduction in the fuel consumption and emissions of the car. This also improves the handling of the car, which results in more precise and stable vehicle dynamics. To provide further weight savings, the steel hat of both riveted and co-cast brake discs, is manufactured to a thickness of 2.5 mm, instead of the 7.5-9 mm of a conventional cast iron housing, with the same level of performance.

50

Co-cast steel hat surface

Perfect replacement guidelines for two-piece discs Bearing in mind the difference in design and materials that are used on two-piece brake discs, there are some crucial points to take note when handling and fitting these discs. Due to the decreased thickness of the disc hat, DO NOT pick up or handle these brake discs by the steel hat as this might cause minute distortions and lead to excessive lateral runout and the onset of brake judder. • Thoroughly clean the surface of the wheel hub and the disc before installation. • DO NOT turn the steering wheel by holding the disc/caliper. This will lead to distortion to the reduced thickness, lightweight steel hat. • When refitting the wheel, follow the correct torque sequence as well as the manufacturer’s recommended tightening torque. • Tighten the wheel screws in three steps. 1. Position by hand 2. Initial torque 75 Nm 3. Final torque (refer to the car manufacturer’s instructions) • Only original OE quality rims should be used to prevent disc deformation. •

Please take note: an increase in noise, vibrations or harshness could be the outcome of not following the above fitting guidelines, or replacing these discs with integral discs. For a more detailed version of the above please visit the support area in Bremboparts.com.

ECV AC Compressor COMPRESSOR DOES NOT START/OPERATE E.G FAULTY/STUCK TEMPERATURE/PRESSURE SENSOR, AN OPEN OR GROUNDED CIRCUIT IN THE WIRING > IMPROPER IMPUT SIGNAL TO THE AC CONTROL MODULE/COMPRESSOR Improper or interrupted electrical signal input is one of the common failures that may affect operation of the AC system. Erratic readings and signals generated by the system’s various sensors will cause abnormal or no operation of the ECV AC compressor. Example: AC compressor does not start. Reason: faulty readings from the engine coolant temperature sensor indicating engine overheating

RECOMMENDED DIAGNOSITCS

Make sure you have the proper vehicle data. Obtain an electrical circuit diagram for the HVAC system for the vehicle model you work on. The electrical circuit diagram and its understanding is a major part of the troubleshooting. It enables the operator to define which components must be taken into consideration, how they operate and how they are related to other inputs and signals. 1. 2. 3. 4.

Test performance of the compressor as well as inspect the variable control solenoid If the inspection process confirms that the solenoid and the compressor are intact and the unit still does not operate, further troubleshooting of the control signals sent to the unit must follow the service Diagnose the system-related control devices such as pressure and temperature sensors and the HVAC-system related electrical circuit for possible failures Monitor and analyze input signals sent to the AC compressor

COMMON TROUBLESHOOTING METHODS AC COMPRESSOR OPERATION – if the clutch engages (compressors with electromagnetic clutches) and the clutch’s coil relay operation. ECV SOLENOID – the electromagnetic coils resistance, 3,6 OHM is correct for 12V systems, coil performance thus the AC compressor capacity changes provoked by a dedicated tester OBD DIAGNOSTICS – HVAC module registered errors CONTROL SWITCHES AND RELAYS – if send the proper signals to the HVAC module VOLTAGE – if generated on the proper level and according to the car manufacturer specification FUSES – condition of these related to the AC system components. Keep in mind, a burned fuse is a sign of some improper condition within the circuit. A loosened contact of the fuse stick can also provoke the fuse failure.

A dedicated ECV compressor tester enables a thorough troubleshooting of the solenoid in various aspects. Resistance measurement can confirm if the solenoid is in operational condition.

Furthermore, the tester enables manual control of the compressor performance settings.

WIRING – conductivity – inspect the suspect component harness insulation and connectivity to power/ground INPUT SIGNALS CONTROL DEVICES – pressure switches, transducers, temperature sensors LAB SCOPE – tracking the AC compressor input signals, provoking changes to observe the signal changes, e.g. instant changes in the engine throttle opening (gas pedal pushed) should reduce the compressor output or shut it off completely – the correct pulsewidth signal on the scope should momentarily change or drop to 0% Too low variable voltage signal to the compressor or close to 10% on time may indicate that some other signal commands the compressor off.

Use of a lab scope can track input signals at the variable control solenoid on the compressor. Too low variable voltage signal to the compressor or close to 10% on time may indicate that something commands the system off.

Scope pulse-width modulated signal by the AC compressor by about 20% of the pumping capacity.

Scope pulse-width modulated signal by the AC compressor by its full pumping capacity.

PREVENT WATER PUMP FAILURE BY FLUSHING THE COOLING SYSTEM Proper flushing is one of the most critical elements of cooling system maintenance. Yet it is often the most neglected service in the workshop today. Inadequate flushing can lead to premature water pump failure, resulting in warranty problems and frustrated customers. Read on to discover how flushing the cooling system positively affects the performance of the cooling system.

BENEFITS OF FLUSHING THE COOLING SYSTEM

Gates is not a coolant manufacturer. Yet we do manufacture and supply coolant system components that may be damaged by the use of incorrect or contaminated coolant. So, we would like to stress the benefits of a clean cooling system that enables: • • • • • •

more efficient engine cooling quicker engine warm up better fuel consumption longer lasting components reduced comebacks increased customer confidence

COOLANT COMPOSITION Coolant contains: • • •

water base fluid additives or inhibitors

There are three main classes of coolant technology: Inorganic (Acid) Additive Technology (I.A.T.), Organic (Acid) Additive Technology (O.A.T.) and Hybrid Organic (Acid) Additive Technology (H.O.A.T.). Types

Inhibitor Technology

Inorganic Additive Technology (IAT)

protective layer but deplete over time. They are not very selective, which means they cover all surfaces regardless of what these surfaces are made of. Organic additives form chemical bonds with vulnerable surfaces. They make a thin, though extremely stable protective layer offering longer protection. They are selective, targeting only the areas that need protection. Coolant selection would be easy if all vehicle manufacturers developed their systems with the same materials. But each manufacturer develops a factory fill coolant based on the cooling system component materials it will be in contact with. So, choice of the proper replacement coolant depends on the cooling system design. That is why Gates recommends always replacing the vehicle’s coolant with a coolant recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Do not rely on the coolant colour to make your choice. Coolants may have the same colour, even though their ingredients differ. The function of the dye is to help you spot a coolant leak. The correct answer to what coolant to use when, is again: always use the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended coolant.

Hybrid Organic Acid Silicate & Organic Technology (HOAT) Acid

WHY FLUSH THE COOLING SYSTEM?

1. COOLANT DETERIORATION Just like engine oil and transmission fluid, engine coolant deteriorates over time. It can also become contaminated with abrasive particles and foreign materials. These can form damaging deposits inside cooling hoses and other components. Properly flushing the system will remove those contaminants and deposits. 2. MIXED COOLANTS Besides creating damaging deposits, mixing coolants of different chemistries can lead to corrosion within the system. After all, the various coolant types work differently to protect the engine. Inorganic additives are used to plate cooling system surfaces. They form a thick

52

fill the system with the correct coolant or antifreeze. Dilute the correct coolant type with distilled water until you get a 50/50 mix, or use a prediluted coolant mixture of the correct coolant. • bleed the system to ensure it is entirely free of air. (Modern systems may require diagnostic equipment to bleed them correctly.) This is crucial to avoid contamination and water pump failure. Keep in mind that a coolant change is less expensive than having to replace cooling system components like radiators or heater cores. Moreover, most coolant packaging labels state that the coolant’s five- or ten-year guaranteed corrosion protection is only valid when a complete cooling system flush and fill is performed.

Procedure for cooling system repairs 1. FLUSH 2. FILL 3. BLEED Make sure the flush is completed with the old water pump still in place. Flushing after the new water pump is installed can lead to premature failure. After all, particles may get caught in the seals during the flushing procedure.

HOW TO FLUSH AND PREVENT WATER PUMP DAMAGE?

With a conventional drain, flush and refill much of the contaminated coolant and harmful debris is left behind. The procedure also does little to address the problem of severe accumulated debris. A good flushing tool uses clean water and compressed air and cleans radiators, heat exchangers, hoses and engine blocks. When carrying out repairs on the cooling system, you should: •

flush the system completely, using a Gates Power Clean Flush Tool (part number 91002).

Gates Power Clean Flush Tool

SPOTTING CONTAMINATED COOLANT

If the system has never been flushed and mileage is high, the coolant is probably contaminated, even if it looks clean. Not all contaminants make the coolant look dirty. Sand and other abrasive debris particles, aluminium corrosion particles and mineral content in the water won’t be obvious to detect. (To cite just three examples.)

Caliper Identification CA462/R, CA778/R, CA846/RM CA937/R, CA1065/R & CA1216/R There are several types of front calipers fitted to LDV'S. To identify the correct application, please follow the guide lines listed below.

LDV Front Calipers

Once these three criteria have been matched, we then need to know whether the calipers are leading or trailing on the vehicle.

SACHS WORKSHOP TIP: Clutch Noise.

CAUSES OF CLUTCH NOISE What can you do when the clutch is making noises or the clutch whistles? There are many different kinds of clutch noises. Whistling or whining from the clutch can be caused e.g. by the release bearing running off-center, an off-center input shaft, or a defective pilot bearing. On the other hand, rattling noises may be due to

load alterations if clutch disks are furnished with preliminary dampers. These noises do not impair the function or service life of the clutch. Additional possible causes of the clutch making noises include installation of the wrong parts, or installation of the clutch disk in the wrong position. Clutch noises can also indicate a

defect. The following questions are important for workshops: do the clutch noises occur during setting off or during disengaging? Do they occur when the clutch pedal is pressed, while pedaling, or in neutral position? Do noises occur when the clutch is engaged, while declutching, or at idle speed?

The clutch makes noises? The clutch whistles? Always check the following: • •

Correct part installed? Correct installation position?

TORSIONAL DAMPER WORN

Cause: • Low-revving driving style, i.e., driving at low speeds in high gear and full throttle • Extreme irregular engine operation • Worn joints in the driveline Consequence: Overloading of components

• •

Pilot bearing installed and not worn or defective? Condition (wear) of actuating system checked?

COVER PLATES TORN OFF TORSIONAL DAMPER

Cause: • Clutch bell housing and crankshaft housing flange not centered • Wobbling motion due to angular or parallel offset • Pilot bearing missing, transmission input shaft not guided • Excessive angular movement during transmission installation Consequence: Loose components brush adjacent parts. Comment: Also usually causes drag.

HUB SPLINE NO LONGER PRESENT Cause: • Clutch bell housing & crankshaft housing flange not centered • Wobbling motion due to angular or parallel offset • Pilot bearing missing, transmission input shaft not guided Consequence: Loss of connection between engine and transmission Comment: Causes drag problems and noise in early stages.

54

WEAR-INDUCED GROOVES ON INNER RING OF CLUTCH RELEASER

Cause: • Off-center clutch releaser contact due to parallel offset • Worn guide tube • Insufficient clutch releaser preload Consequence: Relative movements cause various types of noise. Relative movements cause excessive temperature. Comment: This leads to grease loss and therefore premature failure of the bearing

CUSHION SPRINGS TORN OFF AROUND CLUTCH DISK Cause: • Clutch bell housing and crankshaft housing flange not centered • Wobbling motion due to angular or parallel offset • Pilot bearing missing, transmission input shaft not guided • Excessive angular movement during transmission installation Consequence: Loss of connection between engine and transmission Comment: Causes drag problems and noise in early stages.

Symptoms

Airbag indicator lamp lights up. Various error codes relating to the airbags can be set.

Important safety note Technical information and practical tips have been compiled by HELLA in order to provide professional support to vehicle workshops in their day-to-day work. The information provided on this website is intended for use by suitably qualified personnel only.

LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER IV AIRBAG INDICATOR LAMP IS ON AND FAULT OR ERROR CODES RELATING TO THE AIRBAGS CAN BE SET. If the above-mentioned problem is detected, one possible cause may be a faulty or loosened plug connection for the side airbag. So as to exclude other causes of malfunctioning, check the periphery in the area of the airbag system. In such a case, constant contact between the plug connection of the side airbag (Picture 1 position 3) and upholstery of the seat backrest (Picture 1 position 1) is responsible for the above-mentioned problem.

Picture 1: Permanent contact between the plug connection of the side airbag and the seat backrest upholstery

Remedy: • Dismantle cover of the seat backrest • Define the marked area (Figure 1 position 2) of the seat backrest upholstery • (Figure 1 position 1) and cut it out with a suitable tool (e.g. a cutter knife) • Check plug connection (Figure 1 position 3) for correct fit • Position the plug connection in the cut-out area • (Figure 2 position 4 and 5) and fix, ensuring connection is relieved of strain • Fit cover on seat backrest • Unlock the airbag system This should be followed by an error code query using a suitable diagnostic unit (delete error memory if necessary) and a test drive to check the repair measures should also be carried out.

Picture 2: cut-out area in the seat backrest upholstery
