Dear Friends,

Featured on the cover of this issue of Magnificat Magazine is the brand new Burke-DiSanto Center for the Visual Arts that opened in August, and the transformation has been remarkable. What was once the school’s Convent, and then administrative offices and outdated art classrooms, is now a bright, open space that invites students in to gather and collaborate on creative endeavors. We are deeply grateful that Brittan Burke DiSanto ’79 and Fred DiSanto, along with other generous donors, made this bold vision for Phase I a reality, and we look forward to the completion of the project through a second phase of art classroom renovations.

A focus on holistic education, including visual art, has been central to our Mission for decades. The Magnificat experience spans academics, the arts, athletics, faith formation, co-curriculars, health and wellbeing, and social responsibility—all with a balanced, dynamic approach. Those of us who graduated from this school or enrolled our daughters here may take that for granted, but the reality is that many schools simply do not offer the same. Here we strive for each student to be known as she explores many interests and grows into a faith-filled, lifelong learner with a sense of belonging and purpose.

The facility improvements in recent years are an outward indicator of the ongoing investment in our Mission, but each day our faculty, staff, and administrators are the ones living out our Mission to educate young women holistically to learn, lead, and serve in the spirit of Mary’s Magnificat. Within these pages you will see the impact of their efforts, from a science trip to the Galapagos Islands, to a new beekeeping initiative, to the success of our alumnae in their chosen professions. We appreciate their skill and dedication as educators, especially as we continue to navigate our way out of pandemic-related challenges and provide continuous professional development opportunities.

We are also thankful for our many generous donors, who are listed in the special annual report section of this issue. Without their philanthropy, the delivery of our Mission would not be possible. If you made a gift, thank you, and we look forward to partnering with even more alumnae, families, and friends moving forward.

On a personal note, I would like to thank the Magnificat community for the prayers and support extended following the loss of my husband, Rich. Even in our darkest moments, my children and I were able to find comfort knowing that our Magnificat family was there for us. Rich devoted his entire career to advancing education as a Catholic school teacher and administrator, and as difficult as it can be to carry on, I know that my work at Magnificat in a way honors his memory. For that, I am grateful.

New Board Chair Laura Nortz

TheMagnificat High School Board of Directors appointed Laura Nortz as Chairperson at the May 2022 board meeting. The President of Nortz Consulting Group, which provides talent development, strategy, and coaching services to organizations, Laura joined Magnificat’s Board in 2012 and has served on the Executive Committee as secretary and on the Enrollment & Marketing Committee.

“I am honored to lead Magnificat’s Board of Directors during this exciting time in our school’s history with the implementation of our new strategic plan,” Laura said. “This Board is a talented group of individuals with valuable expertise and perspective, united in our commitment to ensuring the strength of Magnificat’s Mission for generations to come.”

Laura serves on the Executive Board of the Dale Carnegie International Training Quality Board and has served on the St. Ignatius High School Loyola Board. She holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Cleveland State University, and her professional travels have taken her to Italy, the United Kingdom, Sweden, the Philippines, China, and Australia, bringing valuable global perspective to her work. Her daughters Morgan Nortz Flannery ’09 and Meredith Nortz ’16 graduated from Magnificat, her son Ryan graduated from St. Ignatius High School in 2012, and she lives in Rocky River with her husband Chris.

Colleen Moran O’Neill ’88 will remain on Magnificat’s Executive Committee as Secretary, having joined the Board in 2014 and served as Board Chairperson from 2017-2022. Under her leadership, Magnificat successfully opened the HM Center for Science Exploration and Innovation, navigated distance and in-person learning during the pandemic, and increased annual giving, among other school accomplishments.

“We are extraordinarily grateful to Colleen for her dedicated and impactful leadership the past five years,” President Moira Clark ’77 said. “Magnificat is in a strong position for continued success as she passes the baton to Laura, who has demonstrated unwavering dedication to our school during her time on the Board.”

Introducing the FAM Network: Mothers’ and Fathers’ Clubs Join Forces to Broaden Impact

Each year, Magnificat families contribute to the success of the school through various events spearheaded by volunteers. Night in Blue, Holly Market, Fish Fries, and the Reverse Raffle are just a few of the activities organized by the Mothers’ and Fathers’ Clubs. In an effort to better coordinate efforts, increase efficiency, and encourage as many families to participate as possible, the two clubs are coming together under one umbrella beginning in the 2022-2023 school year.

“Our parent clubs have long bridged the gap between home and school through active volunteerism, fundraising, and student-focused events, resulting in a strong community here at Magnificat,” President Moira Clark ’77 said. “Joining forces and rolling out a new name that reflects the true scope of this volunteerism will benefit students and help ensure that all families know they are welcome to participate.”

The new name is the Family Association of Magnificat (FAM) Network, led by previous Mothers’ and Fathers’ Clubs Coordinator Brigid Reilley Schaefer ’97. There will continue to be no dues, and chairs will lead each activity. New this year, there will be Class Ambassadors representing parents/guardians from each grade, helping to engage families that are new to Magnificat or have not been involved as volunteers in the past. Anyone involved in raising a Magnificat student—mother, father, guardian, stepparent, grandparent, etc.—is welcome to participate.

“We are hoping that by restructuring the groups to work together more, families will be able to volunteer to help at all our events and attend more FAM meetings to learn more about the organization,” Brigid said. “Our goal is to create an inclusive environment for all Magnificat families that encourages input from all parents, guardians, and family members.”

“Our parents clubs are excited to combine efforts as the FAM Network and expand our reach as we continue all of our past events like the Reverse Raffle and Mother-Daughter Luncheon and explore new possibilities for the future,” longtime Fathers’ Club volunteer Karl Kleinert said. “I’m excited about the FAM Network because it reflects the diversity of our families today and highlights Magnificat’s aspiration to engage and serve our growing and multi-generational community.”

Magnificat’s new Dean of Faculty and Academics

Early in her career, Colleen Greller worked in a highly diverse classroom with students from 13 countries who were native speakers of nine different languages. At the time, education and the tech world were rapidly converging thanks to web-based resources, SMART Boards, and personal devices. She found that technology allowed her to effectively differentiate instruction for each student, in turn making her a better teacher.

“I started experimenting more and more, exploring any tools that might come my way,” she said. “I fell in love with how the landscape of education was changing with the integration of technology.”

Nearly 20 years later, she brings that same innovative mindset and global perspective to her new role as Dean of Faculty and Academics at Magnificat—along with the benefit of having been mentored by her predecessor, the recently retired Marilyn Knox Arundel ’76.

Colleen holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Ohio University and a master’s of education degree in school technology leadership from the University of Kentucky. A lifelong learner, she is nearing completion of a second master’s degree in education administration at Ursuline College.

She started teaching in the Avon Local School District and Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia, where she then became a schoolbased technology specialist and guided teachers in best practices of technology integration. She served as an instructional technologist at SmartEd Services from 20102012, traveling the world to train teachers on how to use educational technology tools. From there she gained leadership experience by helping found Cleveland’s Stepstone Academy in her role as Director of Curriculum and Technology.

Molly McCormick ’13 Director of Faculty and Student Formation

With Colleen’s transition to Dean of Faculty and Academics, Molly McCormick ’13 is filling her vacancy in the new role of Director of Faculty and Student Formation. Molly comes to Magnificat after four years of teaching mathematics at Avon High School.

Colleen joined Magnificat in 2016 as an innovation coach, providing instructional strategies and resources, organizing professional development for faculty, supporting personalized learning, and modeling effective use of new technologies. She was promoted to Associate Dean of Curriculum and Instruction in 2019 and played a critical role in Magnificat’s pivot to distance learning at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.

Much of her work has centered on integrating technology into teaching and learning at Magnificat and expanding course offerings for students. While the school had previously provided a coding course through the Math Department, Colleen spearheaded the new Computer Science, Innovation, and Design Department, which has grown from one coding class to 10 courses ranging from Entrepreneurship to Digital Media Production to AP Computer Science Principles.

Among her proudest accomplishments is the Intro to Mechanical Engineering course in partnership with Motogo, where students learn the scientific and technical skills needed to analyze, build, and maintain motorcycles. Magnificat was the first school to partner with Motogo, and students consistently succeed, unlike other schools, in completely taking apart and reassembling motorcycles by the end of the semester.

Looking ahead, Colleen is interested in building on the school’s strong academic foundation through continued professional development for teachers and programs that keep Magnificat at the forefront of education. In particular, she is interested in equipping students with the skill sets to engage in civil discourse, as well as examining the use of furniture and physical space within the building to encourage thoughtful collaboration and interdisciplinary learning. All this while living out Magnificat’s Mission and values on a daily basis, she added.

“Our Mission is palpable,” she said. “I’ve never worked in a place where I’ve felt the Mission as much as I do here.”

Burke-DiSanto Center for the Visual Arts Opens

Magnificat High School has an exciting new space for exploring the visual arts. Phase I of the Burke-DiSanto Center for the Visual Arts was completed for the opening of the 2022-2023 school year, expanding the footprint for visual art instruction, providing flexibility in configuring workstations, and modernizing classrooms that had not been updated in nearly 30 years. The project was made possible by a generous $2 million gift— the largest in Magnificat’s history—from Brittan Burke DiSanto ’79 and Fred DiSanto.

“We are thrilled to see this project come together so quickly, making a major impact on the experience of students taking visual arts classes at Magnificat,” Brittan said. “Our hope is that promising young artists find creative inspiration in this vibrant, new environment.”

Construction started immediately after school ended last June with the demolition of walls to open up the entryway, an area that was previously a hallway lined with administrative offices. New windows allow natural light to enter a gallery space filled with tables and seating designed to encourage student collaboration. Walls enclosing one old classroom were removed to create a large open space at the heart of the Center. Track lighting, freshly painted walls, polished concrete flooring, and modular furniture generate a bright, updated ambiance comparable to professional galleries and studios. The project was designed and completed by Fielding International, Payto Architects, and Regency Construction.

“When Brittan and Fred decided they were going to do this for Magnificat, they opened up for us a possibility that we had not really yet dreamed of,” President Moira Clark ’77 said. “We are deeply grateful for their vision and their commitment to this school.”

The facility was originally used for the on-campus living quarters for Sisters of the Humility of Mary faculty members. The Convent was renovated into art classrooms in 1993, and the space received only minor upgrades over the past three decades. Classrooms became increasingly cluttered as the number of courses offered increased, and there was limited space available for the display of student artwork.

Three classrooms were left untouched and will be renovated in the second phase of the project, pending

the completion of additional fundraising. Those classrooms are currently used for ceramics, jewelry making, photography, and studio art. The Magnificat community has been challenged to raise an additional $1 million to fund Phase II, and when this goal is reached, the DiSantos will increase their gift to $2.25 million.

“We have already seen, in just a few months, the daily impact of this gift with our students as they gather in this beautiful space together,” said Vice President of Advancement Deborah Durbin ’81. “The DiSantos’ philanthropy is an inspiration to all of us, and we are grateful for the matching gift opportunity to broaden our base of support for the arts at Magnificat. Together, we can complete this project and honor our Mission to educate young women holistically.”

Celebrating the Class of 2022

M agnificat’s 64th Annual Commencement and Baccalaureate Mass were held in honor of the Class of 2022 on Monday, May 23, with faculty, family, and friends in attendance.

The Class of 2022 processed onto Karnatz Family Field for the Baccalaureate Mass, presided over by Fr. Raymond Guiao, S.J. , of St. Ignatius High School. Graduates received their fourth and final pendant, which serves as a reminder to the graduates of their call to live Mary’s Magnificat in the world.

During Commencement, student speaker Ella Ford ’22 reminisced about the last four years and shared a message of perseverance and hope. “We all have our own stories and struggles, but nothing was big enough to stop us—not even COVID,” she said. “Together, we were able to overcome one of the most challenging times in history because we were united by the courage and hope that Mary spoke of in

the Magnificat. We carry that courage and hope with us— courage to become who we are meant to be in this world, and hope for one another’s success and wellbeing as we say farewell to Magnificat and embark on our future.”

Dean of Faculty and Academics Marilyn Knox Arundel ’76, who retired in June, recognized the recipients of the school’s highest awards. Paige Erickson ’22 was named Phi Beta Kappa. Clare Hoban ’22 received the Sister Mary Pat Cook, H.M., Leadership Award. Maura Martin ’22 received the Nancy Powell Service Award. Lauren Shearer ’22 received the Sister Bernadette Vetter, H.M., Award.

This is the second feature in a series highlighting Magnificat’s principals over the years.

The year was 1900. Anna Boggins McAndrew was dying of tuberculosis, and her five children needed new homes. Her husband Michael died before their youngest daughter, 21-month-old Marguerite, was born. Father Nelson Baker’s orphanage in Lackawanna, New York, accepted the boys. The Sisters of the Holy Humility of Mary accepted the four- and six-year-old girls, but they could not take Marguerite.

Principal, 1961-1967

Anna was distraught. Her doctor pleaded on her behalf. Mother Patrick Ward finally relented when Mother Anna Tabourat, though virtually bedridden by scoliosis, volunteered to care for Marguerite during the day until the novices could assume responsibility for her.

Marguerite grew up among the sisters, and after completing her education at their schools, she decided to enter the congregation. But the sisters first sent her to live with her married sister in Canton to experience life outside the convent. Marguerite’s mind remained unchanged. She entered the novitiate on July 18, 1916, and professed final vows on August 25, 1922. Her religious name was Sister Honora.

In 1926 and 1935, respectively, Sister Honora earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. The University of Notre Dame was not co-educational until 1972, but it allowed women to attend summer school sessions beginning in 1918. Religious women often taught during the school year and worked toward their degrees in the summer.

From 1917 to 1943, Sister Honora taught at Cleveland diocesan elementary schools. She then served as the assistant principal at Mt. Marie Academy and Villa Maria High School before her appointment as principal of Magnificat in 1961.

In the summer of 1965, rising junior Colleen Cooney Wilbur ’67 met Sister Honora when her family moved to Cleveland. To ease her transition to Magnificat, Sister Honora had current students contact Colleen before school started. Today, Colleen said, “In my 30 years as a teacher and principal, I purposely extended the same to my new students because I learned a valuable lesson in kindness from Sister Honora.”

Under Sister Honora’s leadership, Magnificat’s reputation for academic excellence grew. Letter grades and the 4.0 grade scale were added in October 1965 to complement the existing 100 percent system. This tripart grading system remains the standard for evaluating Magnificat student performance (although “+” categories were later added for the B, C, and D letter grades).

After leaving Magnificat in 1967, Sister Honora returned to Villa Maria where she was the Communications Secretary until 1977. She died at the Villa on May 18, 1983.

Sister Honora lived humbly among the sisters who rescued her as a toddler, and in her education ministry, she modeled the kindness and compassion they had shown to her. Magnificat will be ever grateful for her service and effective leadership during its early years.

Exploring the Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands have long been a focus of scientific research, most famously by Charles Darwin, who wrote On the Origin of Species based on his observations there. Two groups of Magnificat students and faculty were able to join this tradition of scientific inquiry in June and August through field expeditions with Ecology Project International.

The 12-day trips centered on island ecology, with students collecting conservation data on giant tortoises as they explored secluded islands and observed unique biodiversity.

A Golden Opportunity

New Beehive Adds to Environmental Education on Campus

Magnificat’s Seeds of Service Horticulture Club is abuzz with excitement over the installation of a beehive on campus. The new apiary serves to educate students about ecology, encourage pollination of the club’s plants and flowers, and produce honey that will be sold to raise funds in support of the club.

“I’m most excited about teaching people how to harvest honey and about how important the bees are,” said Bee Committee Leader Claire Green ’24 , who has beekeeping experience from a hive her family keeps at home. “Most people don’t realize how much we depend on them.”

The Seeds of Service Club started in 2014 to challenge students to learn more about nature for the common good. Each year, the club plants and harvests over 200 pounds of produce that is donated to local nonprofit organizations and used in Magnificat’s kitchen. Members maintain flowers and plants indoors and outdoors, grow lettuce and herbs with aeroponic garden towers, and create decorative floral arrangements in planters.

Horticulture Program Manager Karen Ryan Tigue '85 says the club has wanted a beehive for years, and a partnership with a local nonprofit organization helped bring the plan to fruition. Based in Toronto, Ohio, Youth Bee Works provides education about the importance of honey bees and their essential role in the environment and food industry. Founder Justin Sofio works with schools, organizations, and individuals to set up and maintain beehives while teaching about threats to honey bees and how to care for the hives.

Magnificat’s Bee Committee took an eight week course with Justin last spring, donning protective gear, using smokers to calm bees during hive inspections, and adding wooden hives in stacks within a fenced-in apiary with an open top near the tennis courts. They protect the colony from such potential problems as mites and certain beetles, and in August, students helped extract honey from the hive and package the product. The effort aligns with Magnificat’s educational program and schoolwide service initiatives, as well as Catholic Social Teaching within the Church.

“Caring for the bees is a new and meaningful expression of Magnificat's commitment to care for God's creation,” Vice President of Mission Katie Higgins ’99 said. “Grounded in Catholic Social Teaching and in our Humility of Mary heritage, caring for God's creation helps us to recognize our interconnectedness with the Earth. Learning about the intricacies of the bees and their hive generates a sense of awe and wonder for the abundant gifts with which God blesses us.”

The Laudato Si’ Action Platform includes seven goals to enact Pope Francis’ 2015 Laudato Si encyclical on caring for our common home. He wrote, “All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures ... Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey towards your infinite light.”

Pulitzer Prize Winner Speaks at Magnificat

Magnificat welcomed author Anthony Doerr to speak with the AP Literature & Composition classes on May 3. While it is exciting any time we are able to interact with an author of a book in our curriculum, this visit was even more extraordinary because Mr. Doerr is a Pulitzer Prize winning author. We were extremely fortunate to host this critically acclaimed author and give students the opportunity to discuss his book with him.

I first read Mr. Doerr’s novel All the Light We Cannot See in 2014, the year it was published, and I knew instantly that I was reading something outstanding. As an English teacher, I have read many great works of literature, but it is rare to read a newly published work and feel an instant desire to get it into our classes. I shared my reaction with AP teacher Laura Grecol, and she also felt that this story would be an excellent addition to our curriculum. AP teacher Mike Wilson, Ph.D., and other members of the English Department read the book, and it was a unanimous decision to bring this book into the AP classes. The storyline is very powerful and aligns with the Mission and values of Magnificat. In addition, Mr. Doerr’s writing style is complex, compelling, and displays a beautiful mastery of language that engages, challenges, and inspires our seniors in this already rigorous course. We added All the Light We Cannot See to the curriculum in the 2015-2016 school year, and it has been a highlight for students and teachers every year since then.

One of the English Department’s biggest supporters of our adding this book was Sr. Helen Jean Novy, H.M. First, because she is a brilliant assessor of quality literature but even more so because of her unique connection to Mr. Doerr. Sr. Helen Jean is a friend of his mother, Dr. Marilyn Doerr, and it did not take long for her to ask her friend about the possibilities of Mr. Doerr connecting in some way with Magnificat. His busy schedule and the fact that he lives in Idaho did not make this easy to arrange. Until this year, when Sr. Helen Jean let me know that she had confirmed with Dr. Doerr that her son would be able to come to Magnificat. The excitement felt by Sr. Helen Jean and me was palpable as we discussed the logistics of this event and the unbelievable opportunity this would be for our AP students.

Mr. Doerr planned to speak with the students about All the Light We Cannot See, and his most recent novel Cloud Cuckoo Land. The AP curriculum is already very packed, and we were concerned about being able to have students take on both books given their lengths. However, they rose to the challenge. Mrs. Grecol and Dr. Wilson did an excellent job of preparing students to speak about the content and structure of these novels. The AP students who have spent four years not just reading books but learning to understand writing styles and articulate their thoughts were ready to meet a beloved author of one of their favorite books.

Sr. Helen Jean introduced Mr. Doerr to the AP students, who were seated at tables in the LGI. The students were excited to be in the presence of such an accomplished writer. Mr. Doerr sat down at one of the tables and began talking to them. He did not start by speaking about himself or his books, but instead he was asking them questions about the AP Exam they were taking the next day. He offered encouragement and instantly created such a beautiful sense of community among those present. What followed was a natural flow of questions from our students and meaningful answers. The students spoke of style and his writing process and asked questions about specific moments from his book that reflected their deep attachment to the characters and their motivations. Mr. Doerr spoke about his experiences writing both books as well as the editing, revision, and publication process. He shared his feelings about winning such a prestigious award, but also the very relatable connection of his having teenage children.

The hour of time passed too quickly, but before he left, Mr. Doerr was gracious enough to sign copies of the books that students had brought with them and pose for pictures. This is a day that the students, their teachers, Sr. Helen Jean, and I will never forget. I am very grateful for Sr. Helen Jean’s efforts to make this happen and Mr. Doerr’s willingness to join us and offer so many insightful words and inspiring ideas.

Summer Enrichment Program Alumnae Speakers

This year’s Summer Enrichment program featured a fantastic lineup of talented and accomplished alumnae! For three weeks in June, rising seventh and eighth graders heard from 13 alumnae with all different types of careers. The participants were inspired by each speaker and not only learned about their professional journeys, but also heard how Magnificat helped each alumna get to where she is today.

I was able to use the leadership skills I learned at Magnificat to inspire a future generation.”

ABOUT THE SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

Magnificat’s Summer Enrichment Program is specially designed for girls entering Grades 7 and 8. Each day, participants build friendships, explore STEM projects, and engage in health, wellness, and leadership activities within an interactive learning environment run by Magnificat faculty, alumnae, and partner organizations. This program prepares young women for high school and provides an introduction to what it means to learn, lead, and serve at Magnificat.

The varsity softball team fell to Firestone 3-2 in the OHSAA Division I Sectional Championship. Danielle Kincaid ’22 had two hits and struck out three Falcons to lead the Blue Streaks. The young team finished with an 8-10 record overall.

LACROSSE

Magnificat Lacrosse opened up their playoff season with a 7-5 win on the road over Avon Lake. The Blue Streaks got two goals each from Sarah Rogozinski ’22 and Molly Patterson ’23 , while Lilly Raffin ’22 , Kylie Coughlin ’23 and Kristina Fedorova ’24 added a goal apiece. Haley Dunn ’23 was exceptional in goal for Magnificat. The team fell to Hudson High School in the OHSAA Division I Regional Quarterfinal and completed the season with an overall record of 7-11.

Bochenek and Miller tied for ninth in the high jump at the OHSAA Division I State Meet held at The Ohio State University. Bochenek finished her career with a personal best of 5'3", while Miller ended her sophomore season improving her best jump by nearly a foot as she recorded her personal best of 5'5". Both of these jumps were recorded at the OHSAA Division I Regional Meet.

PERFORMING ARTS

Spring 2022 Performing Arts

Magnificat’s Performing Arts Department shone on stage during the spring season. Cast members of the fall musical, Mary Poppins, reprised their roles to perform at the Dazzle Awards in May. The company took home prizes for Best Musical, Best Ensemble/Chorus, and Best Choreography Execution. Congratulations!

At the Spring Concert, the Magnifi-Pops instrumental ensemble, Concert Choir, Chorale, and Show Choir performed classic and contemporary Broadway songs, liturgical music, folk tunes, and more. The Spring Dance Concert featured 52 performers in the Varsity and Junior Varsity Dance Teams plus the Dance Training Company. The theme for the concert was Higher Love, and 65 dances were performed in a variety of musical genres and dance styles.

Flag Pole Dedication

The American flag is now flying higher than ever in Magnificat’s front yard thanks to the generosity of Laura and Craig Notarianni. Though their daughter, Alicen , graduated from Magnificat in 2019 and is well into her studies at University of Dayton, Craig and Laura did not hesitate when asked for help in replacing Magnificat’s aging flag pole. Laura said that what began as a casual conversation following an annual Magnificat Golf Outing led to Craig learning about the project and working with the school to make a plan and budget to see the project through to completion. It truly was a gift of time, talent, and treasure.

“We are grateful to give this meaningful, timely, purposedriven gift,” Laura said. “We hope all who enter Magnificat or spend time on the campus will reflect on the deeper meaning of the American flag and our Pledge of Allegiance.”

Given the opportunity to help thank the Notariannis and all of the men and women who have served our country, students from the history honor society Rho Kappa planned and led a heartfelt dedication on May 20. The program began with a welcome from Caitlin Walrod ’23 , who eloquently stated, “A flag is a very important symbol for all schools in our country, as it represents strength, freedom, and a sense of unity for all citizens. In the days ahead, may this flag be a reminder to all Magnificat students, that they may all embody these ideals of strength, ability, and togetherness.”

Following Caitlin’s remarks, Sadhana Seetalall ’23 led all who gathered in a prayer, and Eliza Farrall ’23 provided a brief history of the American flag before Ella Evanchick ’23 invited guests to join in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The dedication was brought to a close by School President Moira Clark ’77, who offered thanks to Laura and Craig for their generous contributions and to all who took time to mark the special occasion with their participation.

Planned Giving How One Magnificat Family Used Planned Giving Tools to Make a Big Impact

Fran Leisz Hayden ’62 and her husband, Tom Hayden, are longtime supporters of Magnificat and members of the Sr. Bernadette Vetter Legacy Society, a society of donors who have named Magnificat as a beneficiary of an estate gift. Fran and her sisters, Marianne Leisz Kasarda ’58L and Karen Leisz Crandall ’68, all benefited from an HM education. Between them, they have five Magnificat daughters: Sharon Kasarda Curless ’82 , Laurie Kasarda Hertelendy ’83 , Susan Kasarda Henthorn ’84 , Cheryl Hayden Ozark ’91 , and Shannon Crandall ’06 ; and three Magnificat granddaughters: Katherine Hertelendy ’16 , Anna Hertelendy ’19, and Emily Henthorn ’23. According to the Haydens, Taylor Peura ’21 is considered one of the family as well, for a grand total of 12 Lourdes/Magnificat alumnae.

“When we consider what we received from others in the past, we think of our gifts as paying it back,” Tom said. Giving back to Magnificat with time and treasure runs in the family as well; Cheryl and Laurie serve together on the Alumnae Board.

Not only have Fran and Tom included Magnificat in their estate plans as a beneficiary of a percentage of Fran’s IRA, but they also use other giving tools to make a big impact at Magnificat.

“As caretakers of our finances, we have always been alert to any tax savings that could benefit both us and Magnificat … Tax-saving opportunities like these allow us to maximize our contributions to programs we support with the funds we can afford.”

When they reached the age of 71½, they quickly became aware of federal tax requirements to make yearly withdrawals from their traditional IRA and 401K called Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs), but they found that their RMDs provided more income than they needed.

To satisfy a portion of their RMDs, they began making Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs), which are non-taxable transfers made directly from their traditional IRA to Magnificat. Tom says that making QCDs lowered their Adjusted Gross Income, which in turn lowered their Medicare monthly premiums and state taxes as well. (Please note: The current age for RMDs is 72, and tax benefits vary state to state.)

Fran and Tom also set up a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF), which is a charitable giving account. According to Tom, it has simplified his giving because instead of distributing shares of appreciated securities to the nonprofits they support, they deposit cash or shares of appreciated securities into their DAF. Then they request “grants” of $50 or more to be made to the qualifying nonprofits of their choice, and the institution administering their DAF sends the grants to the nonprofits.

The IRS will not allow QCDs to a Donor-Advised Fund, so the Haydens opt to use QCDs for the major organizations they support, like Magnificat. They use their DAF for nonprofits they support with more modest gifts.

College: Conservatory of Music (CCM) at University of Cincinnati Paige studied technical production in the highly competitive theater design and production program at CCM. “Magnificat gave me a place to find my passion in theater and provided me with a well-rounded education,” she said. “The support from the teachers I had gave me the confidence to pursue my passions no matter what challenges I faced. My career field is very male-dominated, but I feel empowered to make decisions with the leadership and communications skills I developed while at Magnificat.” Paige is a mechanical integrator for TAIT Towers, an international production company for world-class live entertainment. The TAIT Towers client list includes Taylor Swift, NASA, Beyonce, and Cirque Du Soleil. Paige’s job is to make multiple project elements work cohesively in the shop and on the road. Her favorite project so far has been working with the Backstreet Boys in Las Vegas and on their current tour.

Mary Pat Ferron Canes ’63

When Mary Pat Ferron Canes ’63 graduated from Magnificat, she was headed toward a summer internship at the White House and a degree from St. Catherine’s University. It wasn’t until decades later that she learned she almost had to leave Magnificat before her senior year.

In a letter written to President Moira Clark ’77, Mary Pat told the story of her mother calling then principal Sr. Bernadette Vetter, H.M. in 1962 to say Mary Pat and her sister Peggy Ferron Downey ’65 would not be returning to Magnificat because she could no longer afford tuition, which was $300 per student at the time. Sr. Bernadette replied that their mother shouldn’t worry, as she would find the resources to ensure that the Ferron girls could stay at Magnificat. While there was not a formal scholarship program at the time, Magnificat’s Endowed Scholarship Program was later established, to which Mary Pat now gives generously to support current families who cannot afford the full cost of tuition.

“If I hadn’t graduated from Magnificat, I never would have received a scholarship to St. Catherine,” Mary Pat recalled. She remembers her time at Magnificat fondly, especially as a member of the Debate Club and an officer of the Future Nurses Club. After graduation, she completed an internship at the White House, where she worked for the Kennedy Administration. She said, “It really opened my eyes to new possibilities and propelled me in a new direction.”

From there, Mary Pat attended St. Catherine University, where she studied sociology and anthropology before pursuing a master’s degree in cultural anthropology from George Washington University. All along the way, she received financial aid to make her education possible.

Mary Pat went on to teach sociology and anthropology at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and she continued to teach part time at other institutions as her family grew. A lifelong passion for writing inspired her to pen numerous articles and papers on cultural issues and current events throughout her time as a professor.

Today, Mary Pat lives in Virginia with her husband Michael, and she recently published her first novel, Dark Queen of Donegal. “In some ways I feel like I have been writing this book since I heard the story of our family from my grandmother,” she said.

When asked why she supports Magnificat through an endowed scholarship, Mary Pat said, “I give specifically to Magnificat because of its values. Being a woman, I feel very strongly about women having these values and having

a strong education. I was a scholarship student at Magnificat, and I didn’t know about it. That is why I wanted to support other students, to help them pave the way to their future.”

Jill D’Amico Brandt ’89

helped pave the way to success for architect Jill D’Amico Brandt ’89. Jill always knew she wanted to be an architect, loving the “puzzle solving” aspect of the job. She completed her Genesis at a local architecture firm, confirming her love for the industry. She then continued on to earn her undergraduate degree at Washington University in St. Louis and her graduate degree at the University of Michigan.

In 2006, Jill started her own business, Brandt Architecture, LLC. She said, “My business grew from word of mouth. I was building relationships, working hard, and doing good work.” Her firm does a wide range of projects, which keeps her job exciting. She wants to design spaces that make her clients’ lives easier. “My favorite part of a project is walking through the final space with a client and seeing how happy they are,” Jill said. She has worked on projects such as 5 Points Tea & Coffee and Harness Cycle, and she was one of the architects of record for Mancuso Homes' Gut Job house featured on HGTV.

Jill is excited to be back at Magnificat to help design a new concession stand for Karnatz Family Field. “Being in a single-gender environment helped me to speak up and build confidence,” she said. Her advice to students is: “Find something you are passionate about, work hard, and be nice. You never know where personal connections will take you.”

Jill and her husband, Todd, have three children. She resides in Rocky River, where she serves on the Design and Construction Board of Review. One of her projects is pictured below.

Sandra Hong, M.D. ’90

Sandra Hong, MD ’90, says she has come a long way since her time at Magnificat, noting, “Staples are what kept my skirt hem up the entire senior year.”

Sandra was accepted into Northeast Ohio Medical University’s (NEOMED) combined BS-MD program straight from Magnificat. She completed three years at the University of Akron and finished her medical degree in four years at NEOMED. She continued her residency training in internal medicine at Summa Health Systems, during which time she served as the program’s chief resident for one year. From there, Sandra completed a two-year allergy and immunology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital/ Harvard University.

When she returned to Cleveland, she began working at University Hospitals and married one of her medical school classmates, Raymond Hong, a Rocky River High School alumnus. A few years later, she accepted a role at the Cleveland Clinic, where she has worked for 17 years.

Sandra wears many hats at the Cleveland Clinic. She is the director of the Food Allergy Center of Excellence, the regional medical director for the Southern Region, and the physician leader of all scribe programs, including the Medical Observation and Scribe Training (MOST) Fellowship. Her vast accomplishments have not gone unnoticed; in 2020 she was recognized as one of Crain’s Cleveland’s “Women of Note.”

“With hard work and perseverance you can achieve anything,” she said, and she thanks Magnificat for setting her, and her sister—Susan Hong ’88—up for success. Being in an allgirls environment “truly teaches you to be an independent thinker,” she said. “This is why I have chosen to send my children to single-gender schools.”

Sandra owes a debt of gratitude to her mother, she said, “I couldn’t have done any of this without [her]. She chose that we went to Magnificat. She has been the one to help us every step of the way.”

She also thanks Magnificat and retired faculty member Rick Phillips for her love of travel. During the summer leading up to her junior year, Sandra and fellow classmates took an educational immersion trip—led by Mr. Phillips—to Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.

Sandra and her husband have one son and three daughters, and they enjoyed a family vacation to England and France last summer.

Kelly Compiseno Lamirand ’94

Youare the leader you have been waiting for,” a quote from Gloria Steinem, has stuck with Kelly Compiseno Lamirand ’94 throughout her 20 years at KeyBank. With her recent promotion to President and Commercial Sales Leader for the Cleveland Market, Kelly is proving Steinem’s sentiment to be true in her own life.

After graduating from Magnificat, Kelly went on to study finance and economics at Miami University. She started her career at KeyBank through their Management Training Program and secured a full time position as an analyst. From there she moved through the ranks, going from Credit Officer to District Credit Officer, until she transitioned to the sales side of the business last summer.

Kelly is a proponent for single-gender education, saying that Magnificat’s competitive environment “drives you toward a leadership role in all areas of your life.” Growing up in a predominantly female environment helped her to gain the confidence and drive she needed to navigate through a maledominated industry. She said, “surround yourself with good people and people that support your success.”

Along with her new promotion, Kelly recently joined Magnificat’s board of directors, in the hope of paying it forward. As a mother of three boys, her role as a board member helps her to stay connected to the school. Kelly cherishes the friendships she made at Magnificat and hopes to help guide the next generation of young women.

Natalie Hostacky Stevens joined Zashin & Rich Co., L.P.A. She concentrates her practice on counseling employers on compliance with workplace laws and regulations, conducting and providing guidance on workplace investigations, and litigating employment-related claims. She also serves as a neutral mediator and arbitrator.

1999

Catherine Oakar ’99 married Brian Dybicz in Cleveland on June 24, 2022. The wedding party included alumnae Margaret Oakar ’96 , Michelle Oakar Adams ’85 , Ann Marie Grimberg ’99, and Emily Pearse Moran ’99. There were many other alumnae in attendance.

Catherine is the Special Assistant to the President for Community Public Health and Disparities at the White House. She previously worked for First Lady Michelle Obama.

Jenny Horval and her husband, Kevin, adopted their son, Ayden James, in April. He was born in March and joins sister Emma.

Annie Leone is a Certified Nurse Midwife who spent time working at one of the largest immigration shelters at the US-Mexico border caring for pregnant mothers.

Chelsea Horwood, M.D. , has spent the past academic year as a Surgical Critical Care fellow at Denver Health and the University of Colorado and will continue next year as a Trauma and Acute Care Surgery fellow.
