Bauchat’s original intentions were to build the car for shows, and while that is still a priority, he says the car is also track ready on any day of the week, with an emphasis on style and comfort. As you move through the park gates, you’re given the choice as to where you’d like to go. If you drive a European car, go ahead and join the line to park down in exhibition among other enthusiasts and

registered car clubs. If you rolled up in something non-Euro, you can’t break the island’s Euro vibes, but you can park in the main lot and walk a short way down to the grounds or choose to go to one of the overflow lots for a free tractor ride through the park on your way to the drop-off point outside of the island. Once across the small landbridge and onto the island, allow yourself to be taken by the atmosphere. You’re cut off from everything else except for an amazing,

family-friendly car show chocked full of the cleanest cars you’ve ever seen and the best European-centric vendors around, so take your time to enjoy it. Volkswagen Canada was even on hand offering test drives of its current fleet to licensed drivers, while the DJ’s soundtrack was accented all day by redlining engines from the on-site dyno. Did you show up to the show a little dirty? 3D Products Canada was out all weekend washing, waxing, and detailing those in need.

SWAPPING AN ENGINE IN THE NAME OF LONGEVITY RELIABILITY

was originally something I was looking to save for later – maybe rebuild parts of my old engine and keep it simple. That was the plan – until it wasn’t. A local friend put up his S15 Silvia SR20DET for sale, and I’ll be damned if I was going to let it get away. For those unfamiliar, The S15 SR20DET is superior in just about every way to the firstgen “red top” SR20 I already had. Better cooling, better oil flow, OEM forged pistons, bigger main bearings, a redesigned valve cover for oil/air separation, and as you may have guessed by looking at all of these improvements, a significant bump in power output. That last part is just a bonus feature, I swear. With the engine in my possession, and a new clutch/flywheel combo supplied by Advanced Clutch Technology (ACT), I was off to Grassroots Performance for stage one of the swap process. The initial phases went as smoothly as they could. We spent a day at the shop dropping my old engine and transmission out of the bottom of the chassis with the front subframe. If you aren’t familiar with the process, engine removal consists of a few simple(ish) steps: disconnect power and electronics, drain all fluids, and in this particular case, disconnecting the rest of the drivetrain from the transmission in order to pull it out with the engine.

The new engine was assembled on the floor of Grassroots Performance, first mated to my sweet six-puck clutch and lightweight flywheel from ACT, and then to the relatively new five-speed. I also took this time to attach some new lightweight pulleys – mostly for style points if I’m being honest. The actual engine-swapping process itself went well. A couple of small things like new heater core hoses had to be addressed, but it was all said and done in the span of 24 hours, and the sight of a new engine in the bay had me giddy with excitement. Queue the downward spiral. With a brand-new, beautiful engine harness from my buddy Travis at TDT Racing, the remaining steps were plug and play. New sensors and plugs connected to their respective spots, and the bolt-on parts we had on the old engine, like my Grassroots oil cooler and filter relocation kit, were a simple move from one engine to the other. AEM Performance Electronics stepped up yet again to supply me with a new 340 LPH fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator to meet the fuel demands for any future modifications, and installation was a breeze. With nearly everything bolted up, wired in, and the essential fluids added, it was time for the first start-up. Except, it didn’t. Upon turning the key to “On,” we noticed the fuel pump wasn’t

With time running out at Grassroots Performance (these guys have families and lives too, you know), we did everything we could except intercooler fabrication, which was for Mike of GT Custom Exhaust Oshawa to do anyway. We figured Mike could solve a simple(ish) electric issue in no time while he did the intercooler fabrication. Unable to start, the car was hauled off to Oshawa for what I assumed would be the final steps. Upon arrival to GT Custom Exhaust Oshawa, Mike was confident

we would figure this one out, and he got started on some sweet intercooler piping for the new SR. Once he finished that, we got started tackling the wiring mess. With a chopped up, bypassed, and spliced chassis harness still in the car that had been through the hands of an unknown number of owners, tracing the source of the problem was damn near impossible, and after several hours testing, Mike was stumped and the weekend was over. I had no choice but to take my still not-running car out of there. Rather than take it home, I had it sent all the way to TDT Racing so he could get to the bottom of this. A new chassis harness was the go-to answer, and my car was completely torn apart in order to remove the world’s most hacked up

body harness, and replace it with a fresh OEM one. Two troubleshooting weeks after we started the swap, my car was back home with every single wire replaced. Assured by Travis that everything was A-OK to go, I sat in the car and took in a moment of solace before testing my luck. As the key turned, interior electronics sprung to life, and I heard something I had almost forgotten the sound of – my fuel pump priming the system. As I turned it to ignition, the engine didn’t even hesitate. As it rumbled to life, I felt the greatest joy I may have ever felt in my life. My car was alive again, and it was reliable. I have been driving it regularly since the start-up, and I have to say the swap was the best thing I’ve ever done to this car. The running temps are lower, the oil pressure is higher, and the combination of confidence in long drives and added power make my 240 feel like an entirely new vehicle. With the season nearing its end, I’ve got to move quickly to finish this thing before winter rears its ugly head. On to the next chapter.

IN RECENT YEARS

a clean example of a fifth generation Civic has become a bit of a unicorn. As enthusiasts wish to get back to the roots of driving, where mostly everything was mechanical and manual, while others want something reliable and easy to fix that will go the distance on a tank of gas, there’s a growing market for nicely-treated EG hatches. The only issue is that once you find one for sale, it’s usually sitting under a tattered tarp in someone’s grandma’s backyard in ideal conditions for the floor to rot away and provide luxury condos to many years worth of critters. Finding one worth owning and building upon is a rarity. In order to find two beautiful examples of what can be done with the ‘92 to ‘95 Civic, we had to stumble upon them in Mexico of all places, where paint is more likely to be bleached away than losing your floors to oxidation. Both are hatchbacks, both are swapped with a Honda K series engine, and both are equipped with Rocket Bunny’s Pandem widebody kit, which also probably added to the market spike for the cars, as it makes the EG look modern and aggressive in all the right ways. Although the cars share a few similarities, each owner has taken steps to make their Civic their own.

For instance: Mario Quiroz Martinez’s car is highlighter green and draws on the K24 engine’s naturally-aspirated potential through use of individual throttle bodies, while Cristian Adrian Segura Lopez took the tried and true turbo route with his bright white K20-equipped hatch to put down some impressive numbers. Built to break necks in terms of and looks and performance, these two have turned their twin EGs into the antithesis of what Honda could have meant for their economical three-door subcompact when they revealed it in Japan in 1991. When the EG originally shipped, the SOHC D series engine that came with it could produce anywhere from 70 to 125 horsepower, depending on which trim level you went with. Swapping in a K24A2 netted Martinez’s car approximately 200 horses out of the box, which is a great base to build on, but he opted to throw a K20Z3 head into the mix to increase flow potential. Inside, that package is further backed by Skunk2 valvetrain and a stage three camshaft, while a beefed-up fueling system, complete with a Walbro 450-lph fuel pump and 1,000-cc Demon injectors, lays the groundwork for the pièce de résistance: the Kinsler individual throttle bodies. Four polished 64-mm trumpets point forward out of the engine bay, and their song through the K-Tuned open header is that of 285 wheel-horsepower’s worth of NA goodness.

Lopez’s hatch is a different story, employing a whole K20Z3 engine that’s been built up to withstand the extra abuse that the Precision Turbo 6266T3 charger doles out. He’s owned two other Civics in the past that he had turbocharged, so this was familiar territory for Lopez. With K-Tuned fuel and intake systems providing the juice that the K20 needs, a Skunk2 camshaft spins away on AEM cam gears, while Eagle rods and Arias pistons provide the heartbeat to the motor. Kept frosty by the Sheepey Street Series intercooler, the Precision journal bearing turbo ramps up power output to 475 wheel-horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, which is put down through a stage four Competition Clutch kit and Wavetrac LSD. Let the hood-exit dump-pipe serve as a visual cue for the kinds of noises this monster makes. While the 17x9-inch Gram Lights 57CRs on Martinez’s car and 16x9 Fifteen52 Formula TR wheels on Lopez’s Civic may not seem like huge sizing, especially for widebody cars, you should remember that the EG hatch came from the factory with 165/70 rubber on 13-inch wheels. The way that each owner pulls their Pandem fenders down over their wheels differs here as well, with Martinez setting a low, yet functional, ride height via K-Tuned K1 coilovers, while Lopez lets air out of his Truhart AirPlus air struts to just tuck the tops of his 50-mm sidewall tires.

Inside, both EGs are outfitted in track style, with aftermarket steering wheels, stripped-down cabins, K-Tuned shift knobs, and Status Racing Ring bucket seats with six-point harnesses. There is one glaring difference between the two here though, and it has to do with where the steering wheel sits. Martinez has his Nardi Personal steering wheel on the left, while Lopez’s Momo/Spoon wheel is right at home on the right-hand side. “I’ve been in love with this style of Civic ever since I first saw one of my uncles drive a brand new one in the ‘90s,” Martinez says of his choice to build his lime green hatch. “The ‘92 to

‘95 Civic is, to me, one of the most competitive categories to build a car, due to the fact that there are so many cosmetic and performance accessories available. Also there are many, many different styles of this vehicle being built, but that only motivates me to have one of the best cars out there!” “When I was a kid, I used to see a lot of people drive this type of car by my street back in California, so I started to like them and I told myself that one day I was going to build one,” Recalls Lopez on what started him on the path to a bagged and boosted EG. “My son came to me one day after I had bought

front axle centerline. Formula Drift rules don’t allow installing the engine behind the factory firewall location, and that would cause our car to be front heavy, which is not ideal for handling and traction. The four-cylinder is 200 pounds less at 220 pounds total weight. It’s also smaller, so it’s easier to work on.

Over the years we have replaced most of the internal components with custom race pieces. We could do a whole book on the development of the engine from 500 horsepower and 7,600 rpm in 2012, to over 1,000 horsepower and 9,200 rpm that we run now.

When we built the 2009 tC for Tanner Foust, we wanted something unique, so we chose the TRD NASCAR V8. It was around 650 horsepower. A few years later, when we built the 2012 Scion tC for Fredric Aasbo to drive, Scion asked us to use the factory engine. They wanted the car to be more similar to the street car - as similar as a rear wheel drive conversion could be. Another reason that the four-cylinder was chosen was for weight. The NASCAR V8 was really heavy due to the iron engine block with 420 pounds total engine weight. Plus, with the Scion being a cab forward design, the firewall is only eight inches behind the

One advantage is lower weight, but our chassis is still a bit heavier than most due to the four doors and the extra crash protection of modern cars. The Corolla is actually a large vehicle. It has a 105-inch long wheelbase, which is longer than a Mustang, S-chassis, or Corvette. A disadvantage is the complexity of our turbo and NOS systems, and making 250 horsepower per cylinder creates some reliability issues. We are also on our own for development of this engine because no one else uses this power plant near our horsepower level, so we need to design and test most of our own engine components.

I really like the 2AR! It’s lightweight and makes great power. The downside is the high cost of our modifications and the fact that there are other lower cost engines that have much more support in the aftermarket.

The Toyota 2GR V6 is a great engine. We consider changing to it each year, but it would be 2018 heavier and need development. The thought is that if we put that effort into continuing the 2AR development we will be more competitive, so we stay the course.

We use the exact 2AR-FE that came in the Scion tC, Toyota Camry, and RAV4. There is a practically identical engine called the 1AR-FE, with the only difference being the crank, rods, and pistons and it is 2.7 liters. We actually used that crankshaft before going full billet crank and it was good for 800 horsepower.

Most challenging is the head gasket sealing and EURO valvetrain. We are still SPECIAL developing these parts EDITION since2018 they are not 100 percent reliable, but we are close though. We never really “blew up” any engines, except when we had some crankshaft main caps break. They cause a huge issue x because when 2 01 8 they break, the oil pressure drops and the bearings will spin and destroy the rods and crankshaft. We also had a crankshaft break in Jhonnattan Castro’s car. Billet main caps and x crankshafts have solved those issues.

WHAT ARE YOUR IMPRESSIONS ON THE 2AR AS FAR AS A SWAP CANDIDATE? DO YOU FEEL IT’S LOOKED OVER IN FAVOR OF OTHER, MORE WELL-KNOWN FOUR-CYLINDERS?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOURCYLINDER ENGINE OF ALL TIME?

Good question! The Honda H22 was really good. We used to drag race with that engine at over 800 horsepower with only rods, pistons, and valve springs; stock valves, crank, cylinders, head bolts, and cams. Personally, I think it may be better than the K24. Toyota also makes a full racing four-cylinder engine that uses one NASCAR cylinder head. It’s really expensive, like $50,000. They use it in Midget Racing.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SAY?

I just want to thank our engine technical partners who build all the custom parts in our engines: Supertech valves, JE pistons, Sonny Bryant crankshafts, Carrillo rods, Calico bearings, PSI valve springs, Portflow does all of our head work, and Ed Pink Racing Engines does our engine block machine work, like boring and honing. Without their help, we couldn’t make this engine work for our application.

THERE

aren’t many names out there that are more synonymous with World Rally Championship than “McRae.” Two years after Colin McRae’s debut in WRC with Subaru, he won the WRC Drivers’ Title in 1995, making him the youngest person to win the title in WRC history - an achievement that his name still carries to this day. In 1999, McRae piloted a Ford Focus to hold the record for most WRC event wins in 2002. Decorated and talented, McRae has always been the WRC driver to watch. Although McRae would leave Ford after the 2002 season on good terms, he still had a soft spot for the company’s platforms for rally racing. At Goodwood’s Festival of Speed in 2006, he unveiled the “McRae R4,” which shared some parts with the first generation Ford Ka compact car that already enjoyed a one-make rally series itself. Where the rally Ka would see horsepower numbers in the 80s, McRae’s R4 boasted a 350-horsepower, 2.5-liter, inline-four Millington Diamond engine without

the use of forced induction. The R4 could also be configured in two- or four-wheel drive and was focused on keeping WRC running costs lower. Unfortunately, the R4 would only see competition in the DiRT series of video games, as Colin McRae was tragically killed in a helicopter accident in 2007. Ten years after the fact, John Peñano of Rally Innovations, avid fan of WRC and McRae, decided that paying homage to what could have been was appropriate for his next SEMA build with Ford, seeing as their platform for 2017 would be the most potent version of the Focus that North America has seen - the Focus RS. Combining the what ifs of the R4 project with the current technology of the RS, Rally Innovations called their new project “R4S” and got to work on their tribute to McRae. “We chose this vehicle platform because it’s the iconic hot hatch that most of us auto enthusiasts have been waiting for Ford to bring stateside,” says Peñano, enthusiastically. “To commemorate the legend and his dominant wins with

Ford, we had to build a tribute 2017 Focus RS with the livery and aero styling to emulate one of McRae’s last project builds: the R4.” It was Rolotech Car Wraps that was entrusted with emulating and translating the graphic scheme from the R4 to the Focus RS, and they did so on the “Frozen White” Focus with Avery Dennison Intense Blue and 3M Storm Gray to reproduce McRae’s cross livery with colors more reflective of Ford than the black and red R4 shown at Goodwood. All of the aero work on the car was done by Rally Innovations with cues taken from the R4, resulting in an aggressive aluminum splitter kit, light plate for the Baja Designs Squadron Pro

LED amber lights, and high-mount wing on top of the RS’s existing hatch spoiler. During development of the aero for the RS, Rally Innovations was lucky enough to have the assistance of Ford’s GT Exterior Design Manager, Garen Nicghosian, who Peñano says was instrumental in executing the design of the parts.

Looking the part is one thing, but performing, especially when it’s a tribute to the great Colin McRae, is paramount. Thankfully, this car is coming from Peñano and his crew, who regularly thrash their SEMA builds, which is a bit uncharacteristic of cars meant for the show floor. The Focus RS is already built to be a road-burner, but those characteristics have been reinforced by RSR Sports-i coilovers that serve up capability for winding back roads and track days, and some DBA 4000 Series slotted brake rotors that pair up nicely with the factory Brembo calipers for some extra abuse. Wrapped in Nitto NT-01 tires are one-off OZ Racing Superturismo GT wheels in 19x8 sizing that have been exclusively coated in Rally White. This has all culminated in a car that’s

perfectly suited to the tarmac rally and time attack events that Rally Innovations built it for. Under the hood of the RS is Ford’s awesome 2.3-liter inlinefour that puts out 350 horsepower, though with the help of a turbo, unlike the Millington Diamond powerplant in the R4. To support the P3T EcoBoost engine, the build team employed Mountune’s intercooler, air induction kit, and triple-pass CSF performance radiator, as well as a blow-off valve and wastegate from Turbosmart. To further push the engine, a JST Performance Stage 3 tune was

mounted to a COBB AccessPort tuner, and for just a little bit more tail-happy fun and rally flair, Ford’s “Wicked Stick” e-brake lever system was installed. Also from Ford’s Performance catalogue is the three-inch cat-back, which has been paired with a Mountune up-pipe and custom three-bung Borla down-pipe for a nice bellow to compliment the 360 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque that the Focus R4S is capable of now. “A key part in this build and who had inspired me over the course of the build would have been my father, Honorio Peñano,”

says Peñano, looking back. “He kept me focused and grounded at all times, as well as being an integral part of the interior build and install. Like the roll cage he had built for this project, he truly served as the backbone and structure for this build!” Accompanying the roll cage inside the RS are a pair of Sparco Evo seats and six-point harnesses, custom interior panels, and a rear seat delete. It’s plain to see that the R4S is all about motorsports. Autometer Cobalt gauges and pods round out the feel, giving readouts on everything from AFR to when to shift. “The great words of Colin McRae, ‘when in doubt, flat out,’ continued to inspire us during the build,” Peñano explains of the process. “When times get tough, just give it your all and your direction will straighten out. All SEMA builds are difficult. A car is a car, a build is a build, but building a car with a team who share your passion is priceless.” When a whole build team inspired by McRae’s passion funnels all of that feeling into a car, the Focus R4S is the outcome. We can only imagine how much fun the man himself would have if he got behind the wheel.
