MILTON FREEWATER, Ore. (KATU) — The National Weather Service in Pendleton, Oregon confirms a landspout occurred about two miles south of Milton Freewater.
Tonya Brewer was traveling on Highway 11 when she saw the meteorological phenomenon in a field.
“When we were headed toward Milton Freewater we thought the clouds looked a bit funky, and then saw this,” she tells KATU News. “I couldn’t believe it was happening.”
NWS Pendleton says in a ‘Local Storm Report’ that “At least one, possibly multiple landspouts observed west of highway 11 between Athena and Milton Freewater.” The agency says they will not conduct a storm survey.
Photos sent to KATU News by Brewer do show multiple vertices extending from the bottom of the cloud to the ground.
A landspout is different from the typical tornado you see from the Midwest because the parent cloud does not have mid-level rotation, however, they are still considered tornados according to the National Weather Service.
