Nicole Jackson is a color genius. I've said this before but it's worth saying again. I've been going to American Mortals for maybe 10 Years and I've had great cuts from other stylists before Nicole came on board but Nicole is my hair angel. She just really gets me. She's the only person I've ever been able to give freedom to do as they please with my hair, as an art, and be completely thrilled every time. I'm talking years worth of cuts and color from her. I know this approach isn't for every stylist or every individual but when I'm feeling like, "Fuck it! Do what you want!" I'm always blown away!
She is also an amazingly, technically talented craftsperson but she's also an amazing people person! Not everyone can be both! She feeds off my vibe and knows my hair better than I do. She knows what I'm capable of in terms of maintaining the look and makes it as easy as possible for me and she has never ever let me down.
I can't say enough about her or this place!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jessica B.Williamstown, NJ18753Apr 2, 2020
Before coming to Nicole at AM salon I really hadn't liked my hair for well over a year. I had an over-processed, very brassy blonde. It felt almost gummy, it didn't hold a curl, and the color just wasn't cute. I told Nicole I wanted to grow it out, but that I felt the integrity of my hair wouldn't be conducive to that style. She quelled my worries and let me know it wasn't the worst it could be, but recommend a slight chop. We talked about what kind of color I was looking for, and she gave me swatches to look at. I felt like she really cared about my hair and understood my wants! What I'm most impressed with is how nice the color looks after a month. I don't think it faded that much, and it looks way healthier than before. It feels like my hair again. Much love and thanks, and looking forward to a haircut & color soon.

I've had my gotten my "hair did" by a couple folk in Philly. I've left rave reviews for a few of them.
Hands down Anthony at American Mortals has given me the haircut I wanted but didn't know how to say it. He dug my polka dot pants and bag- I dug his polka dot soul. Just a really amazing vibe and an incredibly talented hair cutter.
The shop is small, and has a definitively eclectic retro vibe.
I was offered water or a Yeungling. I opted for the latter because how fun is that? And speaking of fun, the giant jar of blow pops? Well that's just charming as f*ck.
It's not the most inexpensive haircut, but you get what you pay for so I've been told and this is evident here at American Mortals.
Can't wait to go back to have some technicolor color added to my hair.
The products they use smell incredible, and feel incredible. I bought a shampoo, and would have also purchased their spit-o-rose, but it was sold out.
I will absolutely be back.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Rachel C.New York, NY281213Aug 12, 2017
Miranda is an exceptional stylist. I've been going to her for years and I've always had awesome experiences with her for both cut and color. She's technical, artistic, creative, and works with you to achieve the desired effect you're looking for.
I just moved to NYC and still come back to have my hair done with Miranda. She even convinced me to try color - we did a rose gold ombré yesterday and I couldn't be happier with the results. I highly recommend Miranda and American Mortals in general. You guys rock.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Gil M.Philadelphia, PA9377May 25, 2013First to Review
I feel a little dirty writing this review. I have been faithfully going to the same hair stylist for the past 6 years I've lived in Philly and never thought I would ever commit hair adultery. But desperate times leads to desperate acts...
I was first led down the sinful road of temptation when passing by this neighborhood spot during renovations. After hearing good things about their Washington Square location and unable to have my needs satisfied on a long holiday weekend, I gave in and made an appointment with Nikki at American Mortals. Close by, quick and easy...what can I say? I thought nobody would find out.
It is a very quaint corner spot with 2 stylist stations and a single wash chair. The interior feel is very cozy - they have a vintage analog radio that would look great in my living room. Upon meeting Nikki, she asked what I was looking for and nailed the length and style perfectly. Very friendly staff and I would feel comfortable with any of them - they seem to rotate between this and the Wash Sq location.
Admittedly the price for a men's haircut is quite expensive, almost making a monthly visit prohibitive. But Nikki did offer complementary hairline touch ups and cleans if I needed something in between visits. They use great products and little things like free combs & lip balm are nice touches. If only the price was a tad more reasonable, I would easily give this spot 5-stars.
Rick J. - if you are reading this confession, consider it an admission of guilt. I feel ashamed and can't stand looking at myself in the mirror. Actually that's a lie too - I can't stop starin'. I look damn sexy now with my haircut.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 8Oh no 0 - Anne C.Philadelphia, PA4312024Feb 25, 2019
Katie Baker is the best. She is so talented, and she knows exactly what I want. I feel such a level of trust when she cuts and colors my hair. I was thrilled to find her at American Mortals and The location is perfect! Best of luck Katie! Can't wait to see what you do!!

This past Saturday I booked an appointment the AMMO location in GradHo (21st and Christian). This was my first experience with any of the locations and I intended to get an ombre color treatment.
I'm sad to say that I had a terrible experience. I showed the stylist - Rachel - some samples of the type of ombre that I wanted. As a natural dark brunette, I didn't want anything too blonde, or a gradient that was too drastic. I came away from my appointment as a blonde with long roots. Perhaps to some, what she gave me would appear to look OK but it is absolutely not what I talked about at the start of my appointment.
I decided that I would wear it for 24 hours and see if it would grow on me. It didn't. I contacted the Walnut St. studio on Sunday to see what could be done but the receptionist and manager were unhelpful. The manager -- who had to email me since they don't have a manager on premises when they are open -- was incredibly slow to respond. They refused to correct my color on Sunday and the best they offered me was to see the same stylist on Tuesday. (I should add that they could have fit me in on Monday but I had to work and an evening obligation. However why should I rearrange my schedule for their f**k up?)
They did refund my money and offer a 20% discount should I choose to come back.
This is the sample I showed her:

Despite their cool, hipster, beer-offering vibe, I will not be returning.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ann E.Philadelphia, PA54304Dec 11, 2018

Satellite location of the flagship Ammo. It's a small facility with all of the hospitality and joyful banter of the existing shop. While my original stylist Max has moved on (to South America) my new stylist Anthony really knows how to cut some hairs. He listens, is personable and is very skilled in his trade. With this location closer to work for me, I know I can schedule online and stop in when I'm in need of a good cleaning up.
If you're a fan of the original ammo, you're going to enjoy this one. If you've never been before, I definitely recommend them. They just do it right.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Elizabeth G.Philadelphia, PA54023Apr 26, 2018
rachel and scarlett are the absolute best. scarlett always hooks me up with a really great wash and is always so friendly, and you can tell it's genuine. and rachel is an AMAZING hairstylist. she's very honest and thorough. we've been through a wild hair adventure for almost a year now and she's taken such good care fixing what went wrong before i met her. she is very good at keeping professional while still being relaxed and having a great sense of humor. i'll never go anywhere else to get my hair done again. and also r&co, are you kidding? these products they use are amazing and they smell SO damn good.
