NEWARK – The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art & Technology presents Common (Under)ground, a new art gallery exhibition opening April 21, from 5-7 p.m. In the past, Pop Surrealist art was often considered lowbrow, stemming from the “retro” style of comics, graffiti and even punk music. Now growing in popularity, pop surrealism can be found in fine art galleries. The Works is proud to present a group of Ohio artists that delve into a mix of cultural symbols and inspire us to look at things a little differently.

Viewers are asked to consider what makes art important. Initially not thought to be intellectual enough for art galleries, pop-surreal works operated outside of the art world. Originally emerging in the mid-20th century, pop surrealism art commonly conveys a cheerful or sarcastic tone as it juxtaposes varying symbols. Today, this style of art is growing in relevance as images are widely distributed.

Explore the fascinating, vibrant artwork and meet the artists who contributed to the show during the official opening reception of Common (Under)ground, April 21. The unique styles of pop surrealism are on display at The Works April 21 through July 2, 2022.

Denison University is the 2022 sponsor of the Marcia W. Downes Art Gallery. The Gallery is free and open to the public. Visit the Gallery during The Works current operating hours, Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit attheworks.org for more details.
