The Sega Saturn isn't just the worst console ever – it nearly ruined Christmas forever

Wow, what an ungrateful little **** this guy is.

Me and my brothers got a Dreamcast for Christmas one year, this is when it was in the last year of it's life and the PS2 was beginning it's dominance........it's still to this day the best present i ever got.

The guy writing this article sounds like he was a spoilt and ungrateful little brat when he was a kid. Be grateful for what you get, some people don't get anything at all.

ApocalypseShadow2697d ago

That's the thing about these opinion articles. They can say what they like without presenting any facts.

The Saturn was not a bad system or worst ever.I have and played a lot of good games on that system. I could see if maybe he said 3DO or Jaguar. But even those had good games on them. Maybe Phillips CDI or the Pippin. But "worst ever?" No.

When I was in the service, I bought a Sega Saturn and enjoyed it a lot. But I knew those around me may not like Sega and told them to get a PlayStation. Eventually I bought it later with RE but didn't stop playing Saturn. Virtual fighter was so big then that soldiers all over the barracks came to my room to play that I had to start bringing it into the rec room to let everyone enjoy it. And virtual on was crazy fun with mechs. Or virtual cop shooting.

He's just got first world problems. He got it right at the end though with being a brat with first world problems. His parents got the wrong one. "Oh dear me. "

DCgamer19902696d ago (Edited 2696d ago )

So you can't express how u feel anymore with being an ungrateful little ****. I really like Sega consoles. Dreamcast is probably my all time favorite. But I get that others will not like it. He can get a present/gift and express he isn't happy with it. A lot of people get gifts they don't like and have it returned for something else. It's perfectly normal. I never got anything growing up. But this doesn't bother me.

rocketpanda2696d ago (Edited 2696d ago )

I don't call gifts I don't like the worst of something because I held high expectations. Unless it is objectively bad. He wrote it off because he didn't get what he wanted and decided to hate it right out of the box. Also, he tried validating it that he never figured out how to play Virtua Fighter. A game easier than Tekken or SF.

Disappointed is what I would call it.

ApocalypseShadow2696d ago (Edited 2696d ago )

Correct rocket. He expressed it in a way that didn't make sense.

I can understand the disappointment DC gamer that he wanted something else for his gift. But explaining that it's the worst console ever because it's the wrong system and he couldn't play a fighting game correctly is ridiculous. That does not make it the worst console ever. It makes it only a disappointment that it wasn't a PlayStation he truly wanted.

There is a difference between the two. When I spoke about being in the service above, I got sent to Korea instead of Germany like I wanted. But I ended up having a blast over there.I still enjoyed the place I didn't ask for. The guy could have made due with what he got but comes off as bratty at best. He could have gotten the PlayStation later for his birthday and had both systems doubling his fun.

SegaGamer2696d ago

The guy said it's the worst console ever just because he got it ahead of his preferred choice and then said it almost ruined Christmas forever.........it's something that only a spoilt brat would say. He's not even taken into consideration how much his parents would have had to pay to get hold of a PS1 over a Saturn at the time.

joab7772696d ago (Edited 2696d ago )

Loved my Dreamcast, but my story concerns the original Nintendo and Sega. I remember my grandma telling me that the Nintendo had sold out, so she could only get a Sega. I made myself grateful, but my cousin and I always got the same things, and he had asked for a Nintendo and the original Zelda.

The package arrived from Cali and sat under the tree for a week. On Christmas I opened it and it was the Nintendo and Zelda, and I was so damn happy! Oh Grandma! Will always remember that!

It isn't that the Saturn is bad, it's that kids want one thing or another for a reason.

Bigpappy2695d ago

Opinion are like Butt holes... this is more proof of that.

rainslacker2694d ago (Edited 2694d ago )

I actually liked the Saturn. Sega fumbled the release and long term support in their panic against Sony at the time, which only hurt them more going forward. But the system itself was quite capable for it's time, and if it had more time, it could do things that people wouldn't see until the generation after it.

But yeah, if people are upset because they get a Genesis instead of a SNES(allegorically speaking) for xmas, it sounds more like those spoiled little brats that throw a tantrum because someone didn't buy them the exact model of something they want.

If I were his parents, I would have taken it back, and told him to go without.

For the record though, and off topic, Magic Knight Rayearth and Guardian Heroes were some of my generation defining games.:)

Mikerob20072697d ago

well i got my saturn for xmas the year it came out and i loved it. Virtua fighter 2, virtua cop and many more games. It was excellent.

LastCenturyRob2696d ago

Was lucky enough to have the day off from work and school when Panzer Dragoon Saga was released... The only place that got them was the local TRU and they only received two copies...Glad I got there when it opened! Virtua Cop is still one of my favorites!

Muadiib2696d ago

Also Sega Rally, Exhumed (best console fps before GoldenEye), the Panzer Dragoon series, Sonic R, Tomb Raider (which we got first) and a bunch of others. It was a shame they didn't put a dedicated 3d chip in the Saturn like the PS1 had and over complicated the design (with 2 cpu's for example) which made it a nightmare to design 3d games for and made it too expensive for what it was, it really hurt the console in the long term. The lack of a proper 3d Sonic game was an insult and an embarrassment though. I didn't enjoy a console generation again till I got the Xbox 360.

Over all it was an ill conceived console* that Sega (and Lobotomy) performed wonders with but it wasn't close to being the legendary console that the Megadrive was. It's telling that after the MegaCD, the 32X and the Saturn I didn't buy the Dreamcast, who in their right mind would trust them after that?!

Sega totally dominated 3d in the arcade, I'm astounded they didn't recognise that was where gaming was going on consoles as well. Total fools must have been leading Sega during those years.

rainslacker2694d ago

I still love booting up my Saturn....one I got for Xmas the year it released.;)

My parents were enablers.....

Don't think I've ever been disappointed in getting a console. It's quite an expensive gift, and for me, I could always find things I wanted to play on it. Got a job at an early age, and brought anything else I wanted, so getting a $300-400 console as a present was pretty awesome.

Jayszen2696d ago (Edited 2696d ago )

What a spoiled brat! God Knows how his own children will turn out.

The Sega Saturn had many good games, Virtua Fighter, Virtua Cop, etc, etc. I still have my old Sega Saturn and use it 2 or 3 times a year together with my Dreamcast when I feel nostalgic to play some of my favourite games from the early and late 90's (Jet Grind Radio, Crazy Taxi, Ecco, etc.). Admittedly, the Saturn has not aged as well as the Dreamcast which still had games made for it up until 2012 (the last year I bought games for the console).

DCgamer19902696d ago (Edited 2696d ago )

What the hell does him not liking the Saturn have to do with having children????????? These are kind of comments that makes u look stupid not him. Also, u can get a gift, not like it return it and express yourself. It's normal. Otherwise god forbid people express how they really feel about something mundane as video game consoles.

FreeSpeech692696d ago

There is zero reason to hate the Sega Saturn. Maybe ignore it but anyone who think Sega Saturn is the "worse console" needs to be locked up.

Jayszen2695d ago

@DCgamer1990

I don't know if you bothered to read the article. I am referring to the writers own behaviour as a child and his reference to how children behave. If anyone looks stupid, it is you as you have jumped on something without understanding the reference.

mixelon2696d ago

The Sega Saturn isn't even remotely in the running for "worst console ever" - that's insane! It has a strong, if somewhat limited library, but if you like Japanese titles it was great!

Jaguar? 3DO? CD32? Virtual Boy? Any of the more obscure failed consoles?

Merry Christmas anyway everyone :D

rainslacker2694d ago

CD-i probably ranks as the worst. It wasn't even really a console, despite being marketed as one.

mixelon2693d ago

Yeah CDI was baaad.. It's hard to choose one definitively. :) they're terrible for different reasons.. Pippin sucked too.. I at least remember wanting a cdi back in the day for some reason.

rainslacker2693d ago

I wanted a CD-I because it had some cool looking Zelda games. These were the days before internet, so it wasn't known they weren't all that good. Glad they were priced out of my spending range, although I did pick one up a few years ago for collection purposes.:)

kakashi812696d ago

Had both panzer dragoon and night warriors for Christmas. Then got x-men vs street fighter, kof 97 , and cyber bots!!! Love my Saturn.

Sony States We Will Know More About the "Long-Term Vision" of PlayStation Later This Month

Sony has confirmed that there is something happening later this month and it involves SIE which is the division that operates PlayStation.

Skuletor2h ago

My guess, is they were waiting for the new CEO position to be finalized before their next showcase and now that's out of the way.

neutralgamer19921h ago

Yes I think you are right. They wanted the leadership in place hopefully now they can give a strong showing of what’s to come

S2Killinit32m ago

Its not confirmed that this will involve game announcements.

Cacabunga28m ago

Tbh this claim doesn’t reassure me at all..

46player1h ago

Sounds good, PS5 Pro preorders. Let’s do this!

Crows901h ago

I don't get it....we barely got any ps5 exclusives and people already want a refresh??

crazyCoconuts22m ago

When they show GTA6 on the Pro I think you'll get it

anast1h ago

Big things right around the corner.

purple1011h ago

Almost optimistic to say, but those leaks of the 6 cancelled games (games that were not even announced)

yeh, maybe some didn't actually get cancelled after all

notachance1h ago

as a long time ps fans I hope they still put great single player games front and center, make your live service games if you have to but don’t force your 1st party studios to make something they don’t want to.. redfall is an unfortunate example of a good studio forced to basically destroy themselves.

Rumored PlayStation May 2024 showcase could happen this week per industry insider

A renowned industry insider has suggested the rumored PlayStation May 2024 showcase featuring Silent Hill 2 could happen this week.

Bogus!
Why would Sony do that and how would this benefit them?
1) It would piss off their media partners (IGN, Gamespot, Edge, etc.) since they would have to allocate resources fast to cover the event.
2) Risk of not having great coverage or proper coverage from the various source
3) It could give the impression that they are not confident in their own stuff.
4) They would miss the chance to hype the event losing viewers and losing free marketing time.

Again I'm calling it bogus unless it's a small showcase before the big one or because they want to announce that Hellbalde 2 is also coming on PS5.

SlothLordPootus14h ago

As far as I can remember, they typically give a week heads up for these sorts of things.

Lightning7714h ago

I was about to say Sony always gives a week in advance for their show.

VersusDMC13h ago(Edited 13h ago)

Last year it was a weeks notice.

https://blog.playstation.co...

May 17th announcement for may 24th show.

VersusDMC13h ago

Nintendo always tweets that a direct is happening tomorrow but no one cares.

Sony gives a week or days of notice and we get anti sony type fake outrage like this.

But good luck trying trying to get some Sony hate going...

Petebloodyonion13h ago

You just mention it!
Sony gives a week in advance NOT just a couple of days.
So I fail to see what Sony's hate movement I'm trying to start when it's a basic business strategy to not piss off your partners (ask Sega).
And I doubt it's hate to ask how it would benefit Sony in doing so.

thesoftware73012h ago(Edited 12h ago)

@Versus
Huh? What?

Bro you really should relax, if what you read was some kinda negative against Sony.... seriously, is that what you got from the comments?

Bro, he was debunking the rumor, and gave perfectly good reasons why it would be unlikely, and your Nintendo Direct comparison is different, as this is supposed to be a BIG Sony showcase, not a surprise 20 min direct, and Sony 's pattern has been one week.

Slow down warmonger.

VersusDMC12h ago(Edited 12h ago)

@thesoftware730

"1) It would piss off their media partners (IGN, Gamespot, Edge, etc.) since they would have to allocate resources fast to cover the event."

That is implying Sony is preventing them from doing their job properly therefore negatively affecting their business...but i guess that's a reach in your mind?

And it's not like they need that many resources to cover the stream. They just need 3 people to react to the stream live and make some easy articles made up mostly of summaries of Sony provided press releases. They would have enough time to "prepare" if it was announced with one days notice.

Petebloodyonion10h ago

@Versus
" That is implying Sony is preventing them from doing their job properly therefore negatively affecting their business...but i guess that's a reach in your mind"

No, it simply implies that some media all over the world might (keyword MIGHT) not properly cover the event like having proper articles for each game announced, or having a proper preshow. maybe some popular YouTubers won't have time to prepare or simply your local newspaper doing an article on tech and game.

So why would Sony take a chance?
What benefit would that give them?

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 10h ago
Petebloodyonion13h ago

Before I get tons of replies for Sony given a week in advance, my initial comments are related to the notion that the Show could happen this week as the title mentions.
Now to be fair the complete article mentions that Jeff said the Show could happen later in May giving time for Sony to give the normal 7-day notice.

Again not trying to start a negative thing here just thinking that it's bogus that Sony will have a show this week

notachance12h ago

Yeah as much as I’d like to hear what sony’s 1st parties have cooked, it’s not their style to shadow drop a showcase.

Still waiting for ghost of tsushima 2, I’m ready whenever man..

KwietStorm_BLM8h ago

You're assuming media outlets don't know about it.

gold_drake4h ago

i can tell you that no one cares if ign is pissed or not.

watching a livestream and writing stuff aint the world. many habe done that before your god ign.

fr0sty30m ago(Edited 30m ago)

As a former gaming journalist that covered Sony & Nintendo's E3 conferences 3 separate times and was flown out to multiple press events for THQ, Square, and EA, let me inform you of this thing called an "embargo" that journalists are put under... it's very possible that details of this event have been given to the gaming press, but they are not yet allowed to discuss it. In fact, that may be where our leaker got their info...

How And Why Online Multiplayer Is Still A Thing For Dreamcast

A trailblazer for online gaming, some players are still holding a candle for Dreamcast.

purple1011d 21h ago (Edited 1d 21h ago )

such a shame, its my fav console by far. it was way better than ps1, problem was ps2 was due to come out, a year or so later, and many just waited for that, especially after the flop that was the Saturn,. (even though it way okay, it didn't sell well,).

ps1 did sell well, a lot of those fans waited for ps2. thus, the downfall of Dreamcast,,

Jingsing1d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

Every console is responsible for its own destiny, You don't go around pointing fingers at him or her or anybody, cowards do that and that ain't you! you're better than that!

lodossrage1d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

Not true,

The Dreamcast falling apart was because Sega couldn't make up the pay for the increasing debt from the Sega Master System, Game Gear, 32x, Sega CD, and Sega Saturn. The Dreamcast and Genesis were profitable. But the profits weren't outpacing the debt plus interest.

It had nothing to do with anyone waiting for the PS2

MetroidFREAK211d 3h ago

You're forgetting the most important part of the story. Sega was losing so much money so fast due to their past failures, they couldn't sustain the business. Even if the PS2 did help the demise of the system, the true blame is Sega themselves

lodossrage1d ago

Exactly

Even Bernie Stolar R.I.P (former Sega exect) admitted in an interview past debt was what hurt the Dreamcast.

Everyone says "Sony killed Sega" when that's not even remotely true. Not just that, but most of their debt came from fighting Nintendo, not Sony

ZeekQuattro22h ago

This. The only truly successful home platform Sega made was the Genesis. Every thing else flopped to varying degrees. The real culprits were Sega of Japan and Sega of America which went to war against each other for some odd reason.

Chocoburger1d 8h ago

I bought a DreamPi to play both Dreamcast and Saturn online! So far I'm only played with two people online with Saturn, and I need to spend more time with the Dreamcast community in order to play with them. I miss ChuChu Rocket online, good times!

Profchaos1d 7h ago

P2P there's even Sega genisis games that still connect online based on this.

Hosted servers wasn't really something I saw regularly on non oc platforms until the 360 era.

Ravenkiss1d 3h ago

The Dreamcast was easily my favorite console of all time, home of many good fighting games
