The freshest kids

A break is a musical interlude during a song, and the dance style called breaking or b-boying on the streets began in the 1970s in (arguably), the Bronx, NY. DJ Kool Herc noticed that when he played break beats between songs, dancers reacted with their most impressive dance moves. He christened those dancers "b-boys" and "b-girls" or "break-boys" and "break-girls." The Black and Latino communities of NYC invented early hip-hop dance styles known variously as toprock, uprock, or breaking, while locking, popping, and electric boogaloo arose among Black Californians. This film presents an oral history of the form, using archival footage and interviews with founding dancers from both coasts
