I just took Last Bronx for a spin after a long time and good lord this game has aged beautifully! It looks, performs, and plays just as well as Virtua Fighter 2! I remember playing the Sega PC version back in the day and thought it was very cool. The Saturn version is obviously a lot better and playing it last night, I was impressed by how smooth and fluid the gameplay was. It's such a good game, and graphically the detail on the character models easily top Virtua Fighter 2. The Japanese version is worth owning, a two disc set that comes with some cool goodies, like a poster! It's funny because this was one of the first games I got for my Japanese Saturn, a sealed copy from Play-Asia for just $15! playing it again after so long, it feels new to me again (does that ever happen to you guys?) I dig the character designs and overall urban aesthetic and ambiance so much, it has so much personality. This intro..so cool

I actually think it looks better than VF2 however, the gameplay, difficulty level and characters are not as good. Don't get me wrong - I still love Last Bronx. And in fact, I played it on PC back in the day. I never owned a Saturn but I did have a few Sega PC games.

FEAR NOT MUSER... I've said on here plenty of times in the past, Last Bronx is my favourite SEGA Saturn fighter for me. Whilst I would more or less agree with Oho (i.e. VF2 being superior on the whole) I actually prefer the pacing of the gameplay, characters, soundtrack, theme etc of Last Bronx. I actually like ALL the characters in it vs the likes of VF. As much as I do love and respect VF, I've always thought - up until VF4 - that their characters were quite honestly, a bit lame. After all, that WAS the idea though in its defense, a game where YOU played a 3D fighting game character. No complex storylines, fancy names, exuberant personalities etc. Simply: a 3D fighting GAME.
But, I tread dangerously on a previous, unfavourable subject re: complexity of characters and storylines in fighting games. Seems only I and one or two others enjoy that aspect to their fighters. I'm not dependent on it, but I do like it. Anyway.
VF2 wins out on gameplay. It's aged really well, even by comparison to LB (which plays a bit more old school, so to speak). But I like that fencing approach of LB > VF2's approach. Right or wrong. It's irrelevant, as I only ever play these sorts of games by myself nowadays. Joe & Yoko are my preferred's...

That is perhaps one of the biggest draws of the game for me! an interesting lore, setting, and characters has done well for many fighting series. Especially Mortal Kombat. Last Bronx has a very cool setting, fleshed out story, and yea I really like the characters and their designs! The Japanese version even comes with a dedicated drama CD. Wish I could understand it though! Soul Calibur also comes to mind, and up until Tekken 4 the Tekken series had a very good storyline and complex characters....then it all got so ridiculous!!

I've always had a soft spot for Last Bronx as the great characters, great graphics and style coupled with a VF2 style control system, tick all the right boxes as far as I'm concened. That said, I have always had one minor issue with the game, namely that the hits are far too damaging and thus the rounds tend to be over extremely quickly. It's certainly not a major game breaker, but it would have been nice to increase the energy bars to at least double what they are in default settings at the very least. Also there are nowhere near the same combo possibilities in Last Bronx as there are in Virtua Fighter 2, but at least the weapon based attacks are a pleasure to behold. Anyway, my personal favorite characters are Yusaku (That three sectional staff is a truly epic weapon!!), Tommy, Yoko and Kurosawa. --- As I've mentioned here in the past, I used to work for my mate who sold video games on Milton Keynes market back in the late nineties. Anyway, Last Bronx was one of the games that we used to regularly leave running to attract customers. We actually managed to sell the odd Saturn system or two on the strength of the intro shown above alone combined with some demonstration rounds. It was also quite facinating to see the interest the game attracted from the Playstation crowd in particular (we only ever sold Saturn, Playstation and N64 stuff), several of which were sorely disappointed when we told them it was a Saturn game. Generally it attracted 'WOW!!' comments all round. I always thought it was strange that we managed to sell more Saturn stuff towards the end of its lifespan, than at any other point. Although in retrospect, we did have the likes of Last Bronx, Quake, Sonic R and Panzer Dragoon Saga to show off the system by then.

It was really during 1997-1998 that the Saturn started to hit its stride. Games like Last Bronx and Panzer Dragoon Saga did things that no one thought the system could pull off. The Saturn could have easily lasted till 2000 like the PSone and N64, imagine what the games would have looked like if the first party Sega teams continued working on it. We saw glimpses of what could have been, as there was a fully working Saturn version of Shenmue! Personally I prefer higher hit damage and quicker bouts, it's why I enjoy older fighting games more than the newer ones. Seeing a 1000 hit memorized combo being done on you as you helplessly watch isn't exactly fun. Short, quick, and precise bouts really capture the true feel of combat, games like Virtua Fighter 2, Last Bronx, Street Fighter II, and other classics do this so well. Those classic were all about combat instinct, reacting to the heat of the moment using very raw tactics.....while modern fighting games are all about math and frame analysis Yoko is an awesome character. Easily one of the best female designs I've seen in games, very cool look and great to use as well. Me too! My family got a PlayStation so all my Saturn gaming was via Sega PC releases. Got to play plenty of good ones too! (Virtua Fighter 2, Last Bronx, Virtua Cop 2, Sega Rally, Manx TT, House of the Dead, Sonic R).

I loved Last Bronx back in the day. It was my preferred fighter for a time and its steep difficulty taught me the benefits of blocking and being strategic in fighting games. As others have said, the cool setting and storyline made the game more appealing and was a great touch after the bare bones arcade ports we'd received previously. Kurosawa was my favourite character because he was bad-ass, however, I've come to appreciate some of the game's other characters over the years. The game has a fantastic roster of interesting characters.
These days I'm less keen on fighters and so would choose Fighting Vipers over Last Bronx because it's more accessible, has an excellent soundtrack and the setting and storyline are more interesting than the generic fighting tournament common to the genre.

Prior to the original Model 2 version of Last Bronx, you have to remember that AM R&D Dept. #3 had absolutely no prior experience of the 3D fighting genre, which makes the accuracy of their Saturn conversion all the more impressive. In fact, I'd be prepared to rank it ABOVE the incredible Virtua Fighter 2 (though slightly below Fighting Vipers and Fighters Megamix, which I prefer for their playability). I haven't played Last Bronx on the PC in years, but I seem to recall it being even closer to the arcade machine graphically - details such as the televisions hanging from the subway ceiling were definitely present and correct. However, even this has since been surpassed by the PS2 edition, not to mention Model 2 emulation has come on leaps and bounds in recent years. On the other hand, for me the Saturn version remains a favourite because of its sheer difficulty. Even with an Action Replay cartridge or using savestates in SSF, it proved a real challenge to unlock all of the various character portraits especially, and being a fan of the overall story I must admit to also enjoying the live action film as well. I absolutely love Last Bronx and after replaying recently has become my favourite Saturn 3D fighter. Joe or Kurosawa have to be the best characters in the game, although I must admit choosing my characters by the weapons they used. Hence Yoko (even though her design was cool) was never my character.
