Lentini expects Milan to be ‘protagonists’ in 2023-24: “I’m thinking about the Scudetto”

By Oliver Fisher -

Former AC Milan midfielder Gianluigi Lentini has revealed his belief that the current side should be looking to win their 20th Scudetto in the coming season.

The first game of the new campaign between Bologna and Milan is now very close, as is the closing of the summer transfer window which saw the Rossoneri be among the protagonists after the sale of Sandro Tonali and the eight signings.

An interesting season awaits for Milan who must look to replicate their excellent European run from last season but balance it better with their domestic commitments, something they failed to do last season as they did not win a trophy.

Milan’s title defence never really got going and collapsed entirely in a January that saw Pioli’s side also get knocked out of the Coppa Italia by Torino at the first hurdle and then lose the Supercoppa final 3-0 against Inter.

Of course, the Rossoneri are not yet in a position where they would be able to compete with the very best in Europe which might make a draw like Manchester City vs. Milan in the Champions League quite a tall order.

Nonetheless, the level of talent in the side is exciting and the hope of everyone connected to the club is that another step forward is taken in 2023-24.

To talk about the coming season, MilanNews spoke to Lentini who became the most expensive player in the world when he joined Milan in a transfer worth a reported 18.5 billion Italian lire (€14m) back in 1992.

What kind of season do you expect from Milan?

“With the transfer market completed, a season of absolute protagonists in the league. I’m thinking about the Scudetto.”

And in the Champions League?

“Even in that case, as protagonists. Milan reached the semi-finals this year, without the players they have bought now.”

De Ketelaere was part of last season’s squad, but now he is leaving for Bergamo. Should Pioli have given him another chance?

“Seeing him from the outside, I notice a footballer who has lost confidence and security in his own abilities. When this is the case, just change the surroundings. Then no one questions talent, not even Pioli.”

Who is the current Gigi Lentini at Milan?

“I liked breaking away, going on the wing at speed and looking for one-on-one. If I have to name one, I say that I see myself in Rafa Leao.”
