Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament is the even better sequel to the excellent Micro Machines. It is a single or multiplayer overhead racing game where you race different types of toy vehicles on a variety of miniature courses.
You go racing on kitchen tables, pool tables, sandpits, and workbenches, and it features a unique mechanic where the aim is to get ahead and to reach the leading edge of the screen before your competitors do. Doing so will award you a point, represented by the colour markers in the top left-hand corner of the screen.
The single player tournament mode features various stereotypes who you can choose to play as (including a very embarrassing Asian woman who is bright yellow). Multiplayer mode features a unique ‘2-on-1’ option, where two players can use the controls on either end of the same Game Gear, plus a cable link mode for dual machine play.
Embarrassing racial stereotypes aside, Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament has stood the test of time and still plays extremely well today. It’s a fun game, with colourful graphics, smooth scrolling and jolly tunes and it translates well to the small screen of the Game Gear.
Micro Machines 2 was developed and published by Codemasters in 1995.
