Dyckia reitzii v. rubra. A fairly large, robust species that is both handsome and temperamental. Large, very leafy, dense rosettes to about 20 inches across with very stiff leaves that are uniformly about a half inch wide, ending abruptly in a blunt tip. Marginal spines are prominent, but not large or decorative. Our original plant is a piece of the type specimen, from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The leaves are green but blush red with even the minimum of bright light. The inflorescence is stout, about 24 inches tall, with orange flowers in a dense cluster on a simple spike. Slow growing, this species is stingy with offsets and most propagation is by dividing the main stem. Great for hybrids, lending form and color and a degree of cold hardiness. This species experiences cold temps and snows in it’s natural range. Sensitive to overwatering. A choice plant but rarely available.
