This Week in History: The Capaci Bombing

Massive explosions shattered the serenity in the sleepy Italian seaside town of Capaci on 23 May 1992. The Sicilian Mafia packed 13 barrels of TNT and plastic explosives under Highway A29, then lay in wait for the moment one of Italy's top anti-mafia magistrates drove above them. Sicily's shadowy Cosa Nostra sent a macabre message, but that act of defiance also became a turning point in the battle against organised crime.

Suzanne Hill returned to the assassination of Giovanni Falcone and why the gruesome bombing may have been the moment that finally loosened the mafia's stranglehold on Sicily. Joined by University College London Professor John Dickie, an internationally recognised expert on the Italian mafia and author of the books Cosa Nostra, Mafia Brotherhoods, and Mafia Republic.
