For as long as contemporary hair-dyeing technology has been available, there have been high-contrast hair-color trends. Y2K chunky highlights, dip-dye ombré, money pieces that frame the face — there's something timelessly appealing about wanting to be blonde and brunette at the same time. But while these trends are often associated with beauty-capricious twenty-somethings, Charlize Theron just proved that a two-tone look can read more like a classic than a craze.
On Wednesday, October 25, Theron attended The Hollywood Reporter's Beauty Dinner, celebrating celebrity's glam squads. She was flanked by her go-to beauty team, including makeup artist Kate Lee, nail artist Tom Bachik, and her two hair geniuses, stylist Adir Abergel and colorist Tracey Cunningham. The Oscar winner's middle-parted lob was pulled half-back, with the lower layer of hair flipping out in the back and a few strands casually yet elegantly tucked behind her ears.
But while Theron's hair has been looking like a blended bronde lately, at this event, it was looking decidedly blonde and brunette via high-contrast sections. Blondest up front, Theron's hair has significant sections of brown, which becomes especially dark in the back. She's allowing her medium-brown roots to grow in, even letting a few silver strands shine through.
Although not as asymmetrical as Miley Cyrus's multitonal look this past spring, it really does have similar — albeit subtler — vibes. And while we don't know what inspired Theron's look and how long she'll hold onto it, her current color combo could easily inspire others looking for a cool way to transition to either a much lighter or much darker shade without making the leap all at once.
