As the gold-and-glass elevator whisks you from the street up to the Grand Hotel Tremezzo’s opulent, high-ceilinged lobby, you know you’re entering an extraordinary place. A grand dame with a modern sensibility, the sumptuous property—originally built in 1910—occupies a prime position in the Italian village of Tremezzo, just across the lake from Bellagio. Guests will find much to admire, from the extensive gardens to the indulgent T Spa with its infinity pool overlooking the water, not to mention the floating pool in the lake. Dining options range from the casual T Pizza in the garden to the romantic La Terrazza restaurant, which serves renowned chef Gualtiero Marchesi’s refined Italian cuisine with spectacular views of Lake Como.

With 91 rooms and suites to choose from, there are enough options to suit the most exigent travelers. The resplendent Suite Carlotta is named for the princess who gave her moniker to the Villa Carlotta next door. Suite Greta pays homage to Greta Garbo, who mentioned the hotel in the 1932 film Grand Hotel. Though each suite has its own character, the most requested one is the grand accommodation on the top floor.

“Our Rooftop Front Suite Balbianello is definitely one of our guests’ favorites,” says Valentina De Santis, the hotel’s CEO. “This suite overlooks the breathtaking Riviera delle Azalee and has unbeatable views all over, from Bellagio to Balbianello peninsula—in my opinion, it’s one of the most picturesque glimpses you can find in the world.” Of course, the view is just part of the room's appeal. "Its contemporary design perfectly blends with the glamour and allure of our historic palace,” she adds. “The Belle Epoque comes to the new millennium in this suite, making it incredibly special.”

Como-based firm Venelli Kramer designed the rooftop suite, which includes a living room, a bedroom with a king-size bed, a well-appointed bath, a walk-in closet, and a private terrace with a Jacuzzi. Floor-to-ceiling windows ensure spectacular views of Lake Como, while the terrace is a tranquil place to relax with breakfast or a glass of wine. Furnishings in royal tones of purple and red add depth and drama to the design, while a marble dining table is the perfect spot for an intimate meal. Antiques from the hotel’s private collection serve as a reminder of its grand past. Guests of the rooftop suites can enjoy these luxurious amenities—and receive the attention of a dedicated butler—for $2,347 per night. grandhoteltremezzo.com
