I have taught and shown this method to over 150 watercolor artists who want to start owning their art

"The clear breakdown of all the different brushstrokes and what each brush can do. And also getting a chance to play with the flat brush in all the ways you suggested. I never had anyone show me how to use a square brush in the way you use it! So good!"
Crystal Tan
“I have attended several workshops with Jillian and each time I walk away with a renewed excitement for watercolors. She shares her knowledge and experience generously and makes participating welcoming and fun. Jillian has allowed me to attempt techniques I have not considered, breaks them down to digestible nuggets and makes otherwise intimidating techniques approachable. Thanks Jillian for leveling up my watercolor skills!”
Allison
"No Formula Florals, together with Watercolor Redefined. These 2 courses are hands down the best classes I have taken on painting florals (and I took many!!). No Formula Florals is the foundation to painting florals and gave me the know-how of how to piece together shapes my brushes make into any flower possible. Together with Watercolor Redefined, I feel like I can paint any flower now, without any step by step tutorials!!! THANK YOU for empowering me with such precious skills and confidence.
Michelle
"Jillian is an incredible teacher. She is kind and humble and always encouraging. I love that she shared the brush strokes so that I can practice them to build muscle memory"
Melissa Deakin
I have attended a few workshops and no one gives the knowledge and insight like Jillian does! Florals always seem intimidating but Jillian taught so well and gave me courage to try!

I’ll be honest with you:

Getting to this point wasn’t easy

When I started out as a new watercolor artist, I really struggled to find tutorials and resources that were pegged at my level.

👉 In my early days of being self-taught, I was looking for floral watercolor artist’s tutorials to learn from.

There was a wealth of free tutorials and resources online. I also started to invest in more materials in the hope of improving (materials were recommendations from artists I admired).

2016: First started watercolor painting roses from tutorials

But then...

I got lost in the sea of free tutorials.  I felt discouraged by the many "beginner friendly" and “easy” tutorials that promised easy steps and formulas only to discover

❌these videos left out vital pieces of information in the process

❌the videos were sped up and I realised I was painting faster than I could cope

❌ that I could not figure out things on my own without relying on someone’s formula

I began to feel discouraged

Not to mention the amount of materials I spent on in the hope of finally being able to paint like the artists I idolised.

2019: Painted from imagination and mostly front facing flowers

Another piece with font facing flowers

So I tried...

Getting more expensive materials in the hope of getting better with more quality goods (but I experienced analysis paralysis with having to decide what materials I should use and ended up having lots of materials with limited knowledge of how to actually incorporate them into my practice)

❌ Looking through more youtube tutorials and painting along instead of simply watching (but I started to get imposter syndrome feeling like the art work was not my own)

❌ Learning from different artists to find common themes in how to use watercolor (only to feel more confused when I noticed conflicting information about how to paint)

I told myself:
There must be a better way to learn this and make this work, especially with the amount of free content online.

And that's when it hit me!

I was going about painting the wrong way.

I had to build that relationship with watercolor and start by getting to know my tools- starting with my brush.

And this time, I finally started to see the results I'd been wanting:

✅ I stopped searching for step by step tutorials
✅ I started to paint often and document my learning to reflect on what worked
✅ I prioritized building muscle memory on how I used the brush beyond other skills
✅ I explored all the brushes I owned and did mark making exercises
✅ I studied floral shapes and themes to help me to paint from reference instead of another
artist

2022: First painting in A3 size painting from reference. Day 1 of 100 day project

100 day project 2022 flowers. All painted with reference photos

100 day project 2022

The best thing?
This released me from relying on formulas when painting.

I was no longer stuck in the hamster wheel of tutorials and noticed a huge difference in self-confidence with my growing practice.

Your 90 Minute Recorded Workshop Preview

Hello, I am Jillian

Also known as krafty fox

I am a watercolor artist based in Singapore. My 24/7 job is a mother - and I think in watercolor.

My 4 year old would tell you that “my mummy is a painter”.

Painting is a space that I have carved out for myself in the busyness of motherhood. Specifically, painting flowers reminds me of how brief seasons are - just as how each season in motherhood is fleeting.

I believe that watercolor is an art that is best learnt by sharpening your skills instead of following steps

Let me simplify and break down the steps in watercolor to help you go from feeling discouraged, frustrated and making little progress - to gaining trust and clarity in the process.

If you want to learn more than just brush strokes - learn about the other deep-dive workshops I offer
