Review: Teatro Colón

Tell me: What’s this place all about?
A world-class theater for opera, ballet, and symphony, Teatro Colón is a stunning architectural building on the outside and gorgeously designed on the inside. If you are lucky enough to score tickets to a performance, the acoustics will blow you away no matter where your seats are.
Wow. What’s it like being there?
It doesn't matter if you're here for a performance or a behinds-the-scene tour, you'll be mesmerized by the graceful staircases, tapestries, red velvet seats, the main room's hand painted dome, and the giant bronze chandelier that hangs from the center of it. The place will take your breath away.
Pretty interesting! Is there a guide involved?
The only way in is with tickets to a performance or on one of the English-language guided tours, seven days a week at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. You can reserve your ticket (300 pesos, or US$12.25) online in advance to make sure you get a spot. If you're solely into architecture and design, a tour is the way to go.
Who comes here?
This is heaven for opera fans. But the tours are also popular with everyone from casual tourists to hardcore design fans and camera-toting sightseers.
Did it meet expectations?
The theater is gorgeous and watching a performance here is nothing short of spectacular.
Got it. So, then, what, or who, do you think it’s best for?
The tour is under an hour so if you're just checking items off your must-do list, this should be somewhere at the top. If you've got time to plan and money to spend, book your tickets for a performance as soon as you book your flight.
