Carnival Row star Orlando Bloom has been cast in new psychological boxing thriller The Cut.

Bloom is set to play an ex-professional boxer who is brought out of retirement to win back his championship title.

To get there, he goes through a gruelling and unsanctioned weight-cut program with a coach who knows no limits, alienating himself from reality and loved ones, as he spirals out of control.

The actor is the only star attached to the project so far, which is currently being shopped out to buyers, with filming expected to start this summer.

Deadline has confirmed that Sean Ellis, director of thriller Anthropoid and BAFTA-nominated crime-drama Metro Manila, will be in the director's chair for this one.

Bloom has recently signed up to star in the movie adaptation of Gran Turismo, but he will next be seen in the long-awaited second season of Amazon Prime Video's Carnival Row alongside Cara Delevingne.

The second, and final season, picks up with ex-inspector Philo investigating a chain of gruesome murders that are stoking social tensions.

"Vignette and the Black Raven plot payback for the unjust oppression inflicted by The Burgue [Constabulary's] human leaders, Jonah Breakspear (House of the Dragon star Arty Froushan) and Sophie Longerbane (Once Upon a Time's Caroline Ford)," a blurb confirmed.

"Tourmaline (Misfits' Karla Crome) inherits supernatural powers that threaten her fate and the future of The Row. And, after escaping The Burgue and her vengeful brother Ezra (Outlander actor Andrew Gower), Imogen Spurnrose (The Tudors' Tamzin Merchant) and her partner Agreus Astrayon (Interstellar's David Gyasi) encounter a radical new society which upends their plans.

"With humans and fae folk divided and freedom on the line, each hero will face impossible dilemmas and soul-defining tests in the epic conclusion of Carnival Row."

Carnival Row returns to Prime Video for season 2 on February 17.
