Cruel Intentions' latest TV reboot is officially on.

A TV adaptation of the 1999 cult classic film has been in the works at Amazon Freevee since 2021, but TVLine has now officially confirmed that the series has been picked up for eight episodes.

Inspired by the French novel Les Liaisons dangereuses by Choderlos de Laclos, the revival will follow "two ruthless step-siblings" who stop at nothing to stay on top of the social hierarchy at their elite college in Washington, DC.

The pair will stop at nothing to preserve their power after a hazing incident threatens to disrupt the college's social ecosystem – according to TVLine's summary of the synopsis, even if it means seducing the Vice President's daughter...

Casting details haven't been announced yet, and neither Amazon nor Freevee have commented officially on the reports, but we do know that production is set to kick off in Toronto in June.

Amazon also hasn't commented on rumours that the series could in fact stream on Prime Video instead of Freevee.

The original film starred Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe as step-siblings Kathryn Merteuil and Sebastian Valmont, who wager a bet on Sebastian's ability to seduce their headmaster's daughter, Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon), before the end of term.

While the new series will be a reimagining of the story, NBC had previously announced a spin-off show following Gellar's character Kathryn 16 years after the events of the 1999 film.

The series was eventually cancelled in 2016 after the pilot episode was filmed, though Gellar later said she was "grateful" that it didn't make it to air.

"Nothing against NBC, but Cruel Intentions is straight streaming. On the first day, I was like, 'This isn't working'," she said just a few months ago.

"It's just not a network show. And if it is a network show, it's not my Cruel Intentions. So, I was actually grateful."
