Spore was a 'work of genius' that needs a sequel, fans agree

Fans of Maxis' Spore would like to see a sequel made.

The idea of revisiting games of yesteryear certainly isn’t new, whether that be via a sequel, remaster, or remake. That being said, it does seem to be the hot trend right now as we all crave a helping of nostalgia. In the past few months alone, we’ve seen remakes of Dead Space and Resident Evil 4, the revival of the Silent Hill franchise, and the long awaited sequel to Alan Wake formally unveiled.

It’s no surprise then that gamers are making their voices be heard when it comes to what they’d like to see next when it comes to old favourites. Capcom fans are hoping for a Code Veronica remake while elsewhere, others are crying out for a modern port of The Simpsons: Hit & Run. Just last month at the PlayStation Showcase, the Metal Gear Solid franchise got a revival thanks to the announcement of the Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake - something fans have been requesting for quite some time. Now, gamers have gathered on Reddit to suggest a sequel be made for a far more unexpected shout, Spore.

Speaking of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, take a look at the reveal trailer below.

Spore is essentially a life-sim real-time strategy released on PC all the way back in 2008. Developed by Maxis and published by EA, players had to develop a species, controlling the ongoing evolution of said species. One of the best things about Spore is the fact that, like Maxis’ earlier hit The Sims, it’s open-ended so you can play for as long as you please. Although, it always felt a little too shallow and empty for my tastes.

Over on Reddit, user IArePant suggested that the title should be the next nostalgic favourite to receive a modern sequel. They wrote, “Spore is unironically a work of genius and deserves a sequel. Seriously. The game lets you create semi-arbitrary 3D characters and have them run around and interact with a procedurally generated environment. With the amount of customisation available to the player, the fact that it runs at all has me convinced it was coded with ancient and magical runes of power.”

“I just wish we could see another attempt at a game of that creativity and scope with modern technology. A true sequel to Spore could be one of the greatest games ever, but no one even seems interested in trying.” Plenty of others agreed with the user.

PrimordialOtter wrote, “Spore was ahead of its time. Imagine it coming out on UE4/5 graphics,” while solen1k added, “I totally agree with you. Spore is an amazing game, even if it did not live up to the hype. A sequel with today's hardware and the right people making the game would be insane.” I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
