Is Desperate Housewives on course for a revival? It certainly looks that way

If there's one thing that's defined the past year's TV trends, it's the spirit of revival: with the likes of Gossip Girl, Sex and the City, Harry Potter and Friends returning to our screens in little and large ways – from one-off reunions to whole series reboots.

And it looks like Desperate Housewives, the hit Noughties domestic comedy-drama, may be the next to make a surprise comeback to our televisions.

Produced by American network ABC and Cherry Productions, Desperate Housewives – which first premiered in 2004 – was the scandal-filled show that had us gripped over an unfailingly brilliant eight seasons.

It chronicled the antics of Stepford Wives-esque foursome Gabrielle Solis (Eva Longoria), Susan Mayer (Teri Hatcher), Bree Van de Camp (Marcia Cross) and Lynette Scavo (Felicity Huffman), living in the eerily perfect-seeming suburban neighbourhood of Wisteria Lane. And, as fans of the show will recall, those women managed to hide some pretty hefty secrets beneath their coiffed blow-drys and stylish outfits.

It was also awarded serious critical acclaim, winning six Primetime Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards and two Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Which is why we raised a – considerably less well tended to, sorry – eyebrow when we saw ABC, the show's original broadcasters, share an image of five of original cast member (the foursome plus Nicollette Sheridan, who played Edie Britt) dressed up in floor-skimming black gowns on 31 December 2021. The post is captioned: “*Desperately* waiting”.

Significant, much?

Fans have predicted as much, commenting excitedly that the post resembled an announcement. A pre-announcement, perhaps…!

This year does also mark the ten-year anniversary of Desperate Housewives leaving our screens in 2012, so it might well be timely…

But what have the official spokespeople said?

While there hasn't been a peep since the Twitter…whatever that was, we have managed to dig up an Entertainment Weekly interview with Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry from back in November last year, in which he sort of hinted that the appetite to create a reboot was very much there.

“With Desperate Housewives, I lucked out with that original cast and I had something to say with that show. If I was to do a reboot of it, I would have to come up with a brand-new idea of what fueled it. I know the formula, and it certainly would be great to try with more time and money,” he told the publication.

We think that sounds very promising indeed, folks!

Then there was the throwback picture that Eva Longoria shared less than a couple of months ago in November 2021, which had fans calling for a reunion.

Longoria also commented to Radio Times, back in October 2021, that she would be the “first to sign up”, if there were talks of the series returning – although she did add that at the time there were no official plans.

She also speculated about where her character, Gabrielle, would be now, telling the publication: “I mean, we ended the series with [Gabrielle] going off to start her own business. So I’d love to pick up and see like how she’s grown that business. Is she, you know, Kris Jenner? Just fabulous and flying all over the world and managing all of these businesses. I would love to think up and and see where her children are and what are they doing, and how did they turn out?".

Let's see if we get a chance to find out!

Teri Hatcher also said she was game for a reunion back in 2018, telling Loose Women: ""I'd be the first person to [return], God, I never wanted it to be over. I love those characters.”
