We're once again hastily assembling this latest issue of Gaming Life in Japan on the eve of the DS Lite's official launch in Japan. The second official launch, that is, as Nintendo at last gets the Ice Blue and Emerald Navy units out to Japanese retail.
The first launch took place on 3/2 and saw some 70,000 Crystal White DS Lite units get into the hands of consumers (and auctioneers, some of whom apparently got bums to line up in line in order to secure more systems). Seventy-thousand may not sound like a lot, but Nintendo could've probably sold a bunch more had it been able to get more units out. In fact, the regular DS saw some 50,000 units sold in the week of the DS Lite launch, suggesting that people are willing to purchase whatever version of the system they can get their hands on.
We already reported on the carnage that ensued during the first launch, both in our last Gaming Life in Japan issue and over at IGNDS. The DS Lite, and the standard DS for that matter, have remained off store shelves since then, and used buy-back prices are still so high that you can actually profit from your purchase at some stores. Obviously, there's still a lot of demand going into the Saturday morning launch of the two blue units.
Demand may be super charged by a couple of other events. The 14th of March is White Day in Japan. White Day is like Valentines Day, except guys give gifts to girls (in Japan, girls give gifts to guys on Valentines Day). A DS Lite makes a great White Day gift for many, especially considering how popular the system seems to be with the girls. Also potentially contributing to the death are rumors of a restocking of supply both of the Crystal White unit and the standard DS.
In short, we're expecting trouble for those who think they can show up during the day and pick up a unit. Most major retailers have posted signs indicating that supplies are going to be low. Once again, most retailers aren't taking pre-orders, and once again, most retailers are being pretty anal about doing the 7:00AM opening thing. It seems that the only way to get one of the new colors (along with whatever supplies of Crystal White and the original model DS Nintendo manages to ship out) will be to line up hours before the 10:00AM opening time. Nintendo: maximum exposure GET!
Nintendo has been trying to minimize the noise. Although in a Sony sort of way, in doing so, it may have actually managed to generate even more press for the system. The company recently pulled its DS Lite commercial from the airwaves (you can see the ad in our last issue -- it's the one with all the people playing the new DS Lite system). Nintendo has also taken up space on the LCD advertisement monitors that appear on major trains in Tokyo. The highly visible ads contain nothing more than the text of a recent press release announcing limited quantities of the DS Lite and a delay in the release of future Touch Generations titles.
But enough about the DS Lite! Due to limited supplies, Nintendo probably won't sell more than 100,000 units this week (prove us wrong, Nintendo -- prove us wrong!). One upcoming videogame product won't have limited supplies, though, and will probably manage to sell over two million units on day one. For more on that, turn the page.
FINALLY FANTASY
The last time gamers got a completely original, traditional numbered Final Fantasy game, the great Dreamcast was still seeing major releases, the DS and PSP hadn't even been announced, and even Xbox and GameCube were waiting for proper unveiling. Final Fantasy XII has been a long time in the works, but it's at last set to arrive to Japanese retail on March 16.
So how long have we had to wait for this title? If you'll recall, Square Enix first unveiled Final Fantasy XII to the press and a few lucky gamers at an unveiling ceremony at the Virgin Cinemas complex in Tokyo's then-new Roppongi Hills complex. That conference took place on 11/19/2003, and the punks over at IGNPS2 wrote about it extensively here. A little math (performed by the editors of Hyper PlayStation magazine) gives a total of 816 days that we've had to wait from the first trailer and details to the game's shipping date.
Square Enix's massive marketing machine has already kicked into gear, and anyone who's been around for major product launches from the company will recognize the tools. It all started with a very visible pre-order program. Japan's entire retail community has gotten in on the act, pushing FFXII pre-orders with the promise of a discount price. Even convenience stores like AM PM and Lawsons participated, with advertisements visible outside the store. This is the kind of marketing that's usually reserved for things like DVDs and Harry Potter books. And, of course, Dragon Quest.
Square Enix also started airing Final Fantasy XII commercials a few weeks back. Sadly, we've only spotted two spots directly related to the game, but in case you missed them in our previous commercial updates, here they are again:
| Final Fantasy XII Square Enix, PS2 Release: 03.16.06
|
| Final Fantasy XII Square Enix, PS2 Release: 03.16.06
|
In addition to these two, Square Enix has been getting help from a few big promotional tie-ins. No, you don't get FFXII character figures when you purchase a Happy Meal or anything. Here are three spots we've seen for FFXII-related merchandise:
| Final Fantasy XII Theme Song
|
| Final Fantasy XII Theme Song
|
| Final Fantasy Potion Beverage
|
The first two are for soundtracks. Singles for Kiss Me Good-Bye and Kokoro no Senshi, both composed by Nobuo Uematsu and performed by Angela Aki, are due out on 3/15 at 1,500 yen each. The main Final Fantasy XII instrumental theme song "Kibou," featuring Taro Hakase on violin, has already been released.
As for that last commercial, we're sure you've heard about the Final Fantasy drink Square Enix and Suntory teamed up to make (you'd better have heard about it... we translated sections from an interview with the producer of the drink in last week's Famitsu recap here at Gaming Life in Japan). That commercial is for the resulting product, the Final Fantasy XII Potion.
First released on 3/7, the Final Fantasy Potion XII can be purchased in two forms. The basic form, the 100mL bottle pictured above-left, is sold for 200 yen wherever drinks are sold. Two bucks may seem like quite a bit of cash, but it's not too bad for an energy drink here in Japan (vending machine drinks tend to cost a minimum of 120 yen).
Of course, the real FF fanatics will want to get the package pictured to the right. This limited edition drink retails for 600 yen each, but is packaged to please:
The box is huge, as you can see in our comparison pic with Ninety-Nine Nights. Included inside is a special version of the bottle with a cap that can be placed on top once it's been opened. The package also includes a character card. In all, Suntory has produced 27 cards and 6 bottle types. Of course, you can't tell ahead of time which bottle and card you're getting, so in order to actually get one of each, you'll probably have to purchase all 3 million of the deluxe packages that Suntory is producing.
As for the drink itself, the FFXII Potion was presumably designed to make you think you're drinking one of the health-giving potions from the game. Suitably, the drink falls under the "energy drink" label. Unfortunately, it also falls under the "tastes like medicine" label. It actually tastes exactly like it looks: blue. The worst drink since New Coke.
Outside of this drink, Final Fantasy XII has seen a few big tie-up products. In last week's Gaming Life in Japan, we shared with you a look at the latest issue of monthly Hyper PlayStation, which has a huge feature on the game, as well as an attractive cover. Today, we stumbled upon the 580 yen book pictured to the right.
The title of this official Square Enix book is "Final Fantasy World Preview." Included is pretty much all the content that has been previewed in the various issues of Famitsu, Hyper PlayStation, Dengeki Playstation and all the other magazines that have covered FFXII. The book has sections for characters, a look at the areas of play, a full report on the battle system, monster and item information and even a section looking back at the history of the series. Closing out the book is a page of memory card stickers representing the major characters.
This book isn't really worth the purchase. It has a boring, uninspired layout and doesn't really give any insights into the game. We'd suggest waiting for future books and using your hard-earned cash on the other FFXII products currently available.
And there is quite a bit to obtain. Square Enix has already made a pin set available, a sample of which is pictured above. See this site for a look at the entire collection, which includes a total of 12 pins and one secret pin. A box containing 15 retails for 4,725 yen, although you're not guaranteed of getting the entire set of 13.
You could also use your money on FFXII hardware. Hori will be offering an FFXII memory card for 3,360 yen. The card includes eight index seals, two for writing and six containing character images. Even more hardcore is the FFXII wireless controller from Logitech (or Logicool, as it's known in Japan), pictured below. It costs 4,980 yen, and it wasn't the greatest feeling controller when we got some hands on time with it at the Jump Festival last year, but for the Final Fantasy fanatic who needs everything...
The truest FF fans of all will invest in a brand new system in order to complete the FFXII experience. Sony Computer Entertainment will release the PlayStation 2 Final Fantasy XII Pack on 3/16. It includes a special version of the PS2 hardware, a copy of FFXII, a Dual Shock, AV cables, an AC adapter and even a cell phone strap. All that in a designers box! Stores in Tokyo were still taking pre-orders for this on Friday, so you may still be able to get one if you're interested (and have some connections in Japan).

ZASSHI JOUHOU GO!
This section of Gaming Life in Japan takes a look at what's big in the latest game magazines from Japan. From Famitsu to Dengeki to smaller publications like Dorimaga, Japan has lots of videogame magazines. While we tend to put up all the news and game info revealed in the magazines on the main pages of IGN, this section gives you a closer look just so you can be sure that you're not missing out on anything.
Be sure and click on the covers of each magazine for larger versions. Print them out and hold them in your hand as you read!
FAMITSU -- NO. 900
This particular issue of Famitsu was released as a bonus issue to last week's double issue. Produced in celebration of Famitsu turning 900 (issues, that is), this appears to be the largest issue of the magazine since the last bonus anniversary issue, which was published on 11/26 in celebration of issue number 832.
Issue 832? What? The number 832 can actually be read in Japanese as "Ha-Mi-Tsu," which sorta sounds like the name "Famitsu." 900 doesn't sound like "Famitsu" at all, but it happens to end in two zeros, prompting the latest festivities.
As with every anniversary issue, this special issue features a look back at the history of gaming, starting with the Family Computer's 1983 release. This lengthy feature has a few interesting bits of trivia that we thought we'd share with you.
Wondering what happened to those Model 2 era Virtua Fighter pros? Bun Bun Maru, Shinjuku Jacky and Ikebukuro Sarah have all been tracked down by the magazine. Bun Bun Maru is actually a Famitsu editor, as he was back then, so it wasn't to difficult for the Famitsu staff to get to him. Shinjuku Jacky still plays VF, he revealed to the magazine. Ikebukuro Sarah now works at a company that makes Pachislot machines.
Ever wondered about the history of Famitsu itself? The magazine started back in 1986 as Famicom Tsuushin. It wasn't until 1991 that it became a weekly magazine. The year 1996 saw the name change to Famitsu.
The feature also touches briefly upon pre-Family Computer era game machines. The Atari 2600 was released in Japan and sold for an amazing 57,300 yen! Epoch had its own game machine, the Cassette Vision, which went on to sell 450,000 units in Japan following its 1981 release.
Remember Space World? The annual Nintendo show started out in 1989 as the Shoshinkai show. The name is actually Japanese for "Beginner's Meeting." Shoshinkai was also the name of a group that Nintendo used for distributing games to retailers. Over fifty major distributing companies took part in this group, which broke apart in 1997 as Sony's direct-to-retailer approach and convenience store distribution spread.
Also included in this bonus issue is a DVD. The DVD has footage of upcoming games, like Rumble Roses XX, Okami and Metal Gear Solid 4 (it's the same trailer as before -- don't start freaking out) along with special segments, including a collection of Famitsu commercials.
Outside of this feature, this is a standard issue of Famitsu. Sega's World Climax Football is revealed in the issue, but that's about the only real major announcement. It seems that most publishers were waiting for a full issue to unleash their newest titles.
Nintendo Dream -- APR'06
Tales of the Tempest takes cover honors for this latest issue of the only worthwhile (unless you're five years old) Nintendo magazine in Japan, Nintendo Dream. Inside, the main focus in terms of game coverage are a set of big DS titles: Tales of the Tempest, Children of Mana and Pokemon Ranger.
Another game getting big focus in the magazine is Densetsu no Starfee 4. This game gives heroine Starpee a new "Hi Hi Spin" action, where she spins around to blast flowers and obstacles out of the way. The game also adds a new attack system on top of Starfee's usual spin attacks. You can now use new "Spill" skills by defeating enemies and building up an SP (Spill Point) gauge. You can select from four different spills, with Starfee and Starpee having one of these each exclusive to themselves. Spill moves include turning all on-screen enemies into coins and healing yourself.
This month's issue includes coverage of Nintendo's big 2/15 press conference where all sorts of DS-related goodies were announced. We, of course, covered the television tuner and all the new Touch Generation! games on IGNDS long ago.
Also taking up big coverage is Mother 3, which had its release date announced in time for publication. Nintendo has been keeping the Japanese press totally in the dark about this game, leaving them to speculate on potential gameplay details based off the screenshots. Nintendo Dream speculates that the game will have eight main characters, and possibly a dog sidekick named Bony.
The monthly question box section, where Nintendo's Matsuaki Hagishima fields questions from readers has just a few bits of trivia in it:
1. The Nintendo logo has been removed from the DS Lite's body. Nintendo Dream speculates that this is the first time in Nintendo game system history that this has been done. The magazine asked the system's designers for reasons and got a number of responses, including the design of the DS Lite resembling that of the Revolution.
2. The shortage of DS systems was completely unrelated to the upcoming release of DS Lite, Hagishima states. In order to get more DS systems to Japan, in fact, Nintendo airlifted overseas DS systems over and changed them to Japanese specifications.
3. As of January 26, the DS had seven million sellers: Nintendogs, Brain Trainer, Yawaraka Atama Jyuku, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart DS, Tamagotchi and Brain Trainer 2.
4. Have you been downloading all those Eigo Zuke DS commercials from our weekly commercial update? Hagishima states that there are four variations on the spots.
5. Baten Kaitos 2 was given a 12 and up rating because it has blood and torture scenes.
6. After 10 years, Nintendo has at last changed its uniforms. Employees still wear lab coats, but they come in a variety of types and colors, including light blue, navy and beige. A placard in the upper left chest area has the words "The Nintendo Difference" along with a Mario logo.
FAMITSU XBOX360 -- MAR'06
Rumble Roses XX gets the cover of this month's issue of Famitsu Xbox 360 (please note that we're running one month behind in our Famitsu Xbox 360 report -- we'll have the April issue, which is already out, in an upcoming GLiJ). Inside, the magazine has a very Xbox-ish mix of Japanese and American title, with Rumble Roses leading off a pack of feature stories that includes The Convenie 200X, Fight Night Round 3, Battle Field 2 Modern Combat, Burnout Revenge and Senkou no Rondo Rev. X.
Based on the pics in the magazine, there seems to be a slight difference in visual quality when comparing US-made 360 games to Japanese made ones. Rondo doesn't look so hot, and The Convenie 200X looks laughably bad. We're talking blurry sprites here. The game does supposedly simulate 50,000 people in a virtual environment, but it doesn't seem that Hamster has attempted to use the Xbox 360's visual capabilities. Xbox Live support is included, but only minimally; players can upload ranking information and take part in sales races.
Outside of game coverage, the magazine has some news features, including a look at the year 2005 in review. The magazine asked readers and retailers to select the top ten news stories from last year. Here's what the list looks like, from tenth to first place, with the date of the news story in parentheses:
10. AQ Interactive Announcement Meeting (12/20)
9. Xbox 360 Price/Release Date Press Conference (9/15)
8. Xbox 360 US launch (11/22)
7. Xbox 360 unveiling (5/13)
6. Announcement of backwards compatibility specifics (11/15)
5. Square Enix joins Xbox 360 (5/16)
4. Reports of HD-DVD compatible Xbox 360 (12/13)
3. Xbox 360 Japanese launch (12/10)
2. Hironobu Sakaguchi joins next generation Xbox (2/22)
1. Dead or Alive 4 delay (12/7)
Retailers were given a separate survey in which they were asked to comment on the Xbox 360's track record so far. 152 responded to the magazine's questionnaire.
Asked about Xbox 360 sales so far, 63.1% said the system has sold worse than expected. 2.7% were cruel enough to say that the system has sold better than they'd been expecting. The remaining said that the system sold as bad as they'd expected or had sold as good as they'd expected. We're not sure which of the two is worse.
The group was asked to predict sales for the system by the end of 2006. 36.6% selected 200,000 units or less. 32.4% expect more than 300,000 units, with 7.1% expecting more than 400,000 units, 18.3% expecting more than 500,000 units and 5.6% expecting the system to cross the million mark.
The top ten sales list has been changed exclusively to Xbox 360, but the numbers are still pretty low. This month's chart covers sales from 12/12 to 1/15.
RANK | GAME | PUB | SALES | TOTAL |
1 | Dead or Alive 4 | Tecmo | 71,742 | 71,742 |

10 | Peter Jackson's King Kong: Official Game of the Movie | Ubisoft | 1,526 | 1,526 |
The Xbox 360 has sold 107,800 units as of 1/15. Over the past five weeks, the system has sold as follows:
12.12 - 12.18: 12,320
12.19 - 12.25: 7,315
12.26 - 01.01: 12,755
01.02 - 01.08: 8,655
01.09 - 01.15: 4,620
The 360 did see a slight sales spike around the release of Dead or Alive 4.

RELEASE DATES
This section of Gaming Life in Japan provides you with an up-to-date release list of games coming out in Japan. We list pretty much everything that's been announced.
In order to make the list more readable, we've split things up into two sections: games that have a release date and games that are TBA. On this page, you'll find the games that have some sort of date attached to them -- even if it's just something vague like TBA 2007.
Recent changes, including new release dates, new names or new prices, are marked in bold. New entries are in red If you encounter something you think may be an error in the list, please e-mail us about it.

RELEASE DATES (TBA)
This section of Gaming Life in Japan provides you with an up-to-date release list of games coming out in Japan. We list pretty much everything that's been announced.
In order to make the list more readable, we've split things up into two sections: games that have a release date and games that have a TBA date. On this page, you'll find the games that have a TBA date. For games that have a more specific date, turn one page back.
Recent changes, including new release dates, new names or new prices, are marked in bold. New entries are in red If you encounter something you think may be an error in the list, please e-mail us about it.
