Inspired by New York, London, Hong Kong and Shanghai, it represents the subjective experience of each place

The New York series: the urban grid and skyscrapers mean that the experience of the street in New York is often defined by central perspectives. For the tiles, the synthesis of this architectural vision is encapsulated in a simple geometry, with diagonal bands articulated by vertical bands. The result evokes the energy and rhythm of New York, creating a cinematic effect.

The London series: in London, where 40 per cent of the city is open space, the designers were inspired by natural forms. Observing the textures and colours of parks, gardens and squares, they created an organic pattern, abstracted from the bark of trees and rationalised to create a modular pattern, layered over a light textural texture that references the Portland stone and London Stock bricks for which London is famous.

Inspired by four metropolises

The collection is inspired by four metropolises (New York, London, Hong Kong, Shanghai) and the intention is to create tile series that represent the subjective experience of each place, with references to the character, materials, urban forms and texture of these cities. Patterns and textures arise from research into the nature of each metropolis, at different levels, and from a process of simplification and abstraction to arrive at products similar to natural materials. From a distance, they look like fine-grained surfaces with subtle variations in texture and colour. Up close, you can distinguish the geometric patterns that create this particular effect.

The Hong Kong series: Density and verticality dominate the urban experience in Hong Kong, the repetition of skyscraper façades generates an intense pattern that is both recognisable and abstract. A grid pattern was developed for the tiles, the rhythm of which is broken by subtle irregularities and variations, layered on an abstract granite background, inspired by the surrounding mountains.

The Shanghai series: the facetted geometry of the roofs of Shanghai's historic districts, the result of a gradual accumulation of buildings over the years, contrasts with the international character of the financial districts. The repetition of rooftop motifs has been abstracted into interconnected rhombuses, horizontal and diagonal lines add articulation, and the texture of the stone creates variations underneath the continuous pattern.
