Angelina Jolie revealed she went off script and spat at Colin Farrell while filming a scene for Alexander.

Angelina played Olympias, the mother of Colin Farrell's character Alexander the Great, in the film despite there being just a one-year age difference between the stars.

Her character spat at Alexander during a heated argument in one particularly intense scene of the war film. Alexander bursts into his mother's bedroom and interrogates her about the circumstances of his father's death.

Alexander, who is about to be crowned the king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon, threatens to put his mother on trial for his father's murder. He calls her a "monster" and a "heartbreaker". Olympias responds by slapping Alexander across the face before spitting at him.

Angelina admitted that she went against director Oliver Stone's instructions and went off script to spit in Colin's face. She said: "That was improvised. That just happened. And me spitting on him just happened.

"It was when they were fighting, and it actually came out of him disrespecting her. In fact, it was a crass thing, and it angered me."

However, Colin wasn't upset by Angelina's actions. He hailed her performance in Alexander the Great, despite admitting he regretted appearing in the movie.

He said: "She’s such a f**king brilliant actor, such a powerhouse. She created such a definitive character and put such an incredible and individual seal on it.

"To look in her eyes and see the way she looked and the way she held herself, with such regality, it was easy. I didn't find it a stretch."
