Sunset view of the Fucino plain seen from the medieval town of Celano, in the Marsica region of Abruzzo, in Italy, The plain was once a large lake, emptied first by the Roman Emperor Claudius in the VII secolo b.C., and then again in 1875, for works commissioned by prince Alessandro Torlonia. Lake Fucino was the third biggest lake of Italy: the land that emerged was very fertile and is now an area dedicated to agriculture.

Borgo Incile (hamlet of Avezzano), Abruzzo region, Italy. Monumental tunnels entrances, said Incile, into which the waters flow out from the plateau Fucino, formely occupied by the lake. The monument is dedicated to the Virgin Mary to whom Alessandro Torlonia was particularly devoted. The monument is surrounded by a park with centuries-old plants now.

The entrance of the inclined shaft of the Major Burrow (Cunicolo Maggiore), one of the many tunnels created by the Romans in the service of the construction of the collector to drain the water of Lake Fucino in the first century AD. The walls show the different finishes, below the bare rock, the upper part and the turn lined with bricks.
