Profile
Lake Resia, also known as Reschensee in German, is a stunning alpine lake located in the province of South Tyrol (Alto Adige) in northern Italy. Situated at an altitude of 1,470 meters above sea level, the lake is surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Alps and is known for its unique and iconic submerged church tower that rises from its waters.
History
Lake Resia was created in the 1950s when the Adige River was dammed to create a hydroelectric power plant. As a result of the damming, the villages of Graun and Reschen were flooded, and the original church in Graun was partially submerged, leaving only its distinctive bell tower visible above the water. Today, the submerged church tower has become an iconic symbol of the lake and is a popular attraction for tourists.
