Buff-faced pygmy parrot (Micropsitta pusio)
These tiny parrots are classified as Micropsitta and this species scientific name is Pusio, which translates to “little boy” in Latin. They are Buff-faced Pygmy parrots (Micropsitta pusio).
They don´t measure more than 9 cm (3 inches) in size thus they are the world´s smallest parrots.
Like woodpeckers their tail feathers come to a stiff point, very large feet in relation to the size of their entire body and sharp claws (can be seen clearly in this photograph). These features provide them with much needed balance as they run up and down the trunk of trees with ease feeding on lichens and fungi.
Those species found in the lowland forests nest in termite mounds but because of the lack of these mounds in the highland forests the species restricted to these region nest as most of the parrots in excavated holes in trees.
The buff-faced pygmy parrot is a very small green parrot found in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest in New Britain and New Guinea.
