Where is it?

Maratea is a hill village high above the sea on Italy's southern Tyrrhenian coast, in the region of Basilicata. The stretch of coast around Maratea is seriously beautiful, very reminiscent of the Amalfi Coast (but without the hustle and bustle!). It has many private villas which make the perfect setting for intimate, flexible weddings with the most amazing views (as shown above!).

Airports

Naples International Airport (NAP) + then a 2hr 25mins drive or 1hr 45 mins fast train.

What is the region famous for?

Basilicata became well-known globally thanks to Maratea which was named the European capital of culture in 2019. The Statue of the Redeemer and the Grotte delle Meraviglie (or ‘Cave of Wonders’ with guided tours through its stalactites, stalagmites & limestone columns) are the most visited attractions in Maratea.

Why get married here?

  1. Weather. Maratea tends to remain mild and warm all year-round making it perfect for weddings!

  2. Beaches + panoramic views. Maratea is in a panoramic position, on one of the most evocative stretches of the Gulf of Policastro. Perched on Monte San Biagio, the city overlooks a magnificent stretch of the Tyrrhenian Sea. It’s those sparkling sea-views and the sun-drenched, slow-paced villages that really draw you here. With 32 km of coast and a mix of rocky walls, beaches and coves there’s lots to discover. Many beaches are only accessible by boat, which increases the chances of having a little piece of heaven for yourself.

  3. Amalfi without the stress! Maratea’s landscape and scenery is very reminiscent of the Amalfi coast but there is one main difference…there are a lot less tourists. Maratea is untouched my mass tourism and is a real authentic hidden gem. If you’re looking for sea, relaxation, culture and Italian flavors without the hustle & bustle of the Amalfi coast then Maratea is for you!

  4. Churches It’s famous for having many churches, at which you can host a Catholic wedding. Imagine walking out of a beautiful church into a small square, and back to a reception with a sea view. Magic.

What type of venues are there?

Maratea offers a range of hotel and villa venues with sea views that can be rented exclusively or partially and for 1-7 nights.

Venues we love:

Villa Cheta

Hotel Villa delle Meraviglie

Villa Cilento

Price - €

As Maratea is more of a hidden-gem destination you will find that venues and suppliers are generally very good value.

Know before you book:

Getting there is not quite as straightforward as some other regions. It's roughly a 2hr drive or train journey from the nearest main International airport (Naples NAP). It’s well worth it for the peace and rustic, real Italy that you’ll experience here.

The venues tend to have wedding packages for exclusive rental, or partial rental with catering on site. This can lead to slightly less personalised weddings but suppliers will always try to be flexible.
