Looks great, plays great, lots of variety in locations and vehicles. Palpable feel of speed. Jeroen Tel does the magic as usual. Lovely cut scenes. A really great game. Compare this to the original Out Run, it's night and day.

A great looking game with good music, marred only by slippery controls on certain levels.

Good presentation with the title song (digitised vocals on C64 are always a "wow" factor!) and cut-scenes; the game in itself is alright, with the main difference from the previous entries in the series being the use of different vehicles through the various levels. Besides the motorcycle, they don't offer much in terms of fun and gameplay to be honest, though the car stages are still good enough, albeit graphics look a bit blocky, while colourful. All in all not a bad conversion though and quite enjoyable.

I hadn't tried this game back then, because it came out right after I switched to a PC.
I played it only recently on emulators. It is possible that the emulated game is not as good as on the real thing, but I have to say that it was a real pain. The first level is quite OK, but from the second on it becomes unplayable. The water stages are almost blind runs. You have no idea about the direction and you just keep steering left or right to avoid obstacles. The third and fourth level on a porsche are ugly. The car bumps here and there with the feeling of not controlling it. Not to mention when you encounter the police, there's little chance to avoid it.
Perhaps, it's just the emulated version that is ugly, but I honestly fail to understand all the fuss about it. There are way better racing games on the Commie. Not as bad as Crazy Cars, but surely not as good as Turbo Out Run.

This had the potential to be THE essential racer game for C64. The variety and atmosphere whilst you're exploring different countries with different vehicles is just exhilarating - you get to commandeer everything from motorbikes, jetskis and speedboats to Ferraris and Porsches. Throw in an absolutely KICK-ASS title tune which features digitized speech (YO, OUTRUN!) plus upbeat in-game music and you have a winner.
The intermission screens between levels which describe the plot are very neat too and suit the overall atmosphere of the game.

The big letdown with this game is in aspects of the gameplay. The "turbo" function feels inadequate and underpowered, plus you're not given anywhere near enough replenishments on the road to top it up.
Then there's the controls - all the vehicles feel like you're driving on ice; steering is irresponsive and sluggish and most of the time you end up sliding off the road.
Lastly, there's the ridiculous difficulty - the time limits are outrageous, especially on later levels. Crashing your car just once almost guarantees failure, and you're only allowed 3 continues before having the restart the entire game.

Overall this is a competent racing game and technically brilliant, but they should've spent more time refining the gameplay.

Can we please have a GTA conversion in the style of Out Run?

Oh man! I love this game. The tune is really catchy, gameplay is good, and the game has an atmosphere of "those times". Play it. Now!

I alawys thought that this was one of the best car racing games on the 64, and I don't think it's any worse than Turbo Outrun. Yes, it is hard, unforgiving even, but frankly Turbo Outrun was way, way, way too easy - so for me, the increased challenge was a welcome change, and I still find myself coming back to this game every now and then, whereas turbo outrun I'll play one from start to finish, and then not touch it for another two years.

I also own the master system version, which is more attractive, but I found that version less playable. One reason you should get it, however, is that it does have a nice soundtrack.

The only good thing about this game was the music by Jeroen Tell.

After Turbo Outrun this was a disappointment for me. I drooled at the opportunity to race with several different vehicles, but was turned off by the graphics and music, both of which were blander than on TOR, and the overall difficulty of this game. I never got past the boating section myself. But I tried a lot, so rubbish this wasn't.

Pretty good game but didn't play it as much as the original outrun game. The graphics were not too great though.

Yep, the game was pretty hard. The final level was way too difficult, I tried and I tried, but never completed the game. It was pretty close though. Graphics and music were pretty good, altough the scrolling could have been smoothier. And there was a diskversion of this game also. I know since I own the original.

I always liked this game. Great music, by the way!

This is a crap game. Nothing more to be said about it. Get the original Outrun instead.

Nice amount of vehicles for a race game on C64, graphics aren't the best I have seen but okay, speed is fine also. On the other hand I think the Master System version is a bit better...
Lemonope 2003-04-16
Interesting, its not just motorcycling of what the Genre says, after completing stages you get to race in a boat, then a car and then another car! I would Genre this Racing, Mischevious.
