C64 Review

Ahhh... Pitfall Harry. One of the classics....a man of mystery. A man who knows how to jump over scorpions, frogs and holes. Does it get any better than this? Yes. Well, at least it should. Pitfall II: Lost Caverns is a let-down for me. Sure, it's one of the "classics" but isn't every game? Seriously, seems like every game for the Commodore gets labelled a classic.

Pitfall II: Lost Caverns - Screenshot 01

Anyway, it's not that this is a bad game. It just could have been better. If the scenery would have changed with new monsters then it could have been an awesome game.

The plot is something like this. You have to reach that aligator/moose-man with wiggly knees that you can see in the beginning. Of course, you have to make your way through a pretty large jungle to find him. Along the way, you can pick up bricks of gold and other items like rings, etc.

Pitfall II: Lost Caverns - Screenshot 02

In your path, you will encounter scorpions, frogs (they must be poison frogs), bats, giant birds, and...eh...well, that's really about it. Oh wait, there are electric eels in the river. When you touch one of these baddies, you are transported back to the last "save spot". Those save spots look like the letter "X" on the ground. Now, while you are being magically lifted back to the last save spot, your money is rapidly depleting. So, stock up on gold because once the money is out...well, you get the idea.

Pitfall II: Lost Caverns - Screenshot 03

Ok, let me first tell you what I LIKED about this game.

1) It's a classic (there's that word again!)

2) You really get the impression that you are exploring.

3) The gold sprites look like real shiny gold!

4) When you fall in a river, you can swim down to the bottom. The river actually looks really cool (no pun intended). The water waves up and down and you actually feel like you are swimming. Once again, this adds to the adventure and exploration.

5) The music is cool (although, repetitive).

6) The balloon ride is fun!!

Now, let me first tell you what I DID NOT LIKE about this game.

1) It can be incredibly frustrating.

2) Timing your moves under those birds and bats can be very difficult. Especially since you have to do it 10,000 times before you reach the end!

3) Check points can be far away. And just when you've cleared about 20 miles of bats and birds you touch a single hair on the bird's feather then you are warped back 20 more miles to do it all over again.

4) Enemies are boring, never seem to have any brains (except the scorpion), and simply move back and forth in the same pattern.

5) After you played the game for 10 minutes, you've played the whole thing. There is literally nothing past the first 10 minutes of the game that is any different than the last 10 minutes.

6) You have to start over and over and over and over and over........

Pitfall II: Lost Caverns - Screenshot 04

Now, to have made this game better, I would have done the following:

1) Give Harry a weapon or two. Let him find a gun or whip or something to destroy those damn birds and bats.

2) Change the scenery!!! The graphics are awesome...just not enough of it.

3) More monsters. Snakes, spiders, gators, spike pits, poison pits, quicksand, giant roaches, etc.

4) Have caves to explore that are dark and dank.

5) Instead of picking up so much money, have an objective like finding a rare stone or jewel or something.

6) When you get hit, loose a little energy...not warp back 500 miles!!

7) A raft for faster water moving.

8) Secret caves under the water.

I could go on and on. :-)

Summary

GRAPHICS: 6 / 10

Even though the scorpion is plain and Harry is a block-head, everything else looks great. The scenery is wonderful. Just not enough of it. I would have rated this higher if there were more graphic backgrounds.

SOUND: 3 / 10

The music is cool. You repeat it over and over in your head. Then you want to shoot somebody because you can't make it stop! Music is too repetitive.

PLAYABILITY: 7 / 10

Controls are nice. I hate the fact that when you fall in a hole, you move about 4 pixels over and you can't move back and forth.

OVERALL: 5 / 10

Go play it for about 10 minutes then stop. After that, you will love the game. Play it for an hour, and you might hate it. I really love the feeling of exploration in this game... just not enough of it.

I loved Pitfall II - on the Atari 2600. It really pushed the limits of what that mid-70s hardware was capable of. Particularly the music - thanks to an extra chip on the cartridge itself it has a lovely background tune that plays throughout the game (which in and of itself was unique at the time) and the music responds to the gameplay - starts out happy, but when you get hit by an enemy, the tune changes to a minor key version of the melody, then resumes the major key melody once you are revived. To me that's one of the defining characteristics of the game.

The C64 version of Pitfall II plays and looks nice; but the music is a disappointment. You'd think with the mighty SID they could improve upon the 2600's music, or at least match it. But no - the melody is there, but it's using the most boring square wave tone imaginable. And the percussive track on the 2600 version is entirely missing, which makes the C64's sountrack dull and lifeless in comparison.

Still a great game, but if I had to pick between the two, I'm going with the 2600 original.

I played it as a kid and couldn't stand how slow it was when you touched a scorpion and had to wait what felt like 10 minutes for the guy to float back to his position. Well now I discovered the balloons and the game is possible to complete. And as with many other game of this age, the ending is quite unrewarding. The little guy just jumps for joy. I'd rate it a 7 out of 10.

Finally completed it. Now I've figured out how to use the ladders properly, the game opened itself up.

Very enjoyable challenge. Perfect atmosphere. 9/10

Much more enjoyable and varied than the first game, but also tremendously harder and could be "fiddly" when playing. This is in the days before you could "save". It definitely drove many a teenager to distraction and demanded iron nerves and excellent timing. Try and get the music out of your head after a few hours! :)

Skill, memory and determination and also walking backwards and forwards on that last climb will see you through to the end. Not a fanciful ending but at least it was some sort of closure. I tried doing things in different orders, but alas the same ending still.. You have to remember that in the 80s, this was state of the art. I remember being blown away by the graphics in the day and it finally got me off Blue Max which I was playing "a lot". A classic game, and it sounds like David Crane is still going strong which is awesome. Thanks David for awesomeness back in the 80s and now again.

Nice feeling of loneliness in this game. The black sky, the huge caverns, music and isolation all add to the atmosphere.

It is difficult though, in most part because of the ladder sections. If you don't grab on properly mid jump you'll fall and fall and end up colliding with an enemy. Frustrating.

7/10

I remember the copy that I had, you had to press Runstop & Restore to start the game. The graphics were better than the Atari 2600, but the rest fall slightly short.

Similar gameplay to the original classic, but this time on a much bigger scale. Doesn't seem to have the same grab as the original (being a sequel and all), but still a terrific game that everyone should play.

I played this game to death as a child and for years knew nothing about the balloons! Another Activision classic from the early days!

I originally bought this game in 1992 on cart with an Atari 800, and I loved it! Recently I bought it on cart for the Commodore 64 and I really love this game still!!!

Even though this game was highly addictive, it's the music that's stuck with me. Up until discovering the C64 emulator I hadn't played this in 20 years, yet during that time, the music has often popped into my head out of nowhere. Great stuff all around!

Graphics wee plain and clear and the gameplay was great. FAR superior to the original Pitfall and better than the versions on other platforms. This was one of the few games that I actually completed! It took a while, but the sense of elation when I finally reached quickclaw was amazing!

It is clear to me that no less than a perfect 10 will do. This game is such a legend that it almost leaves me speechless. This is the second game I owned, but make no mistake about it, that fact does not affect my objective judgment of this brilliant game. Just like Bruce Lee, Pitfall 2 excels in every area. Nice graphics, great music, superb playability. You know the story with many movie and game sequels? They tend to get worse and worse. Just think about Nightmare on Elm Street Series, Death Wish, Friday the 13th... With Pitfall 2 - Lost Caverns the great creators in Activision actually took careful steps to improve on them original Pitfall. And wow, they succeeded! The Lost Caverns has more interesting caves and much more forgiving gameplay that will keep you addicted for many hours, even years to come! It took me a long time to finish this game, but it was well worth the effort and I enjoyed every second of it. Talk about versatility in a platform game: swimming, diving, walking, jumping, flying with a balloon, this is just fantastic stuff! It takes a bunch of geniuses to create games like this, that's for sure. The correct rating for Pitfall 2 would be around 1 000 000 on a scale of one to ten, but 10 is the maximum, I'll have to settle with it. Long live Pitfall Harry!! Can you help him to rescue Rhonda and collect all gold bars??? I did it and am very proud of it!

Really great game and once completed it without dying or losing points. Props to the Atari 5200 though for the extra world after beating the game.

This is one of my absolute favourite platformers! I have completed it more times than I can count and I still enjoy playing. PF2, along with Demons of Topaz and Jet Set Willy are the BIG THREE in the genre, as far as I'm concerned. I suppose you all agree.

Activision made many classic video games and Pitfall II is one of these classics.
I still remember theme song of this game and I remember how we played this few months without pauses. :)

I may be the only one who doesn't like this game. In fact, I hate it with a passion. The timing is just way too tight, resulting in frustration, cussing, joystick throwing... I wouldn't WANT an extra level that's twice as hard. The first one is much too hard already.
Leylee 2004-05-18
I now realize I had this version instead of the first one. I was wondering what happened to all the caves. I was so young back then, though, I barely remember it at all. But it still brings back warm fuzzy feelings of being a lil kid.

Nice game, I don't sometimes play it but it's still a good game. I have finished the game, it was a bit difficult at first. Just you have to watch out for the frog, eagle and a butterfly. Good graphic, sound and music.

This was the best game on the C64. Even today I never get tired of putting good old Pitfall Harry through his paces.
JDP 2003-10-30
I have to agree with some of the other posters here. Be sure to check out either the Atari 5200 or the Atari 800 "adventurer's edition" version, as they are twice the fun as this one(extra "secret" level plus ending sequence. )
Oldskool 2003-10-27
Granted this may have more of a quest and a larger map that feels like you're making progress, as opposed to the original which just threw screen after screen at you. But this game seems to contain too many deaths that send you hurtling too far back to the restart points. And if you make a wrong step, you have endure falling for a mile (but I guess I can't complain this game doesn't do what it says on the tin). All up, very much a grind to play. It's the original for me!
Federico 2003-09-20
I still can't believe how good I feel everytime I play it.
The music is magical!
David 2003-08-16
Good game. Still, nothing like the fantastic Atari 8-bit port which is WAY more challenging.
Sark 2003-07-08
I haven't loaded this game in over 10 years and I can still hear the music in my head and I can remember almost every detail of the first four or so screens. Great atmosphere. I think I was more involved in Montezuma's Revenge. Also by Activision. Check it out if you've never played it.
Jan Wiberg 2003-07-04
Geez, this is one boring game... The graphics, the main sprite, the music... Everything. One day I decided I had to get this one off my back and chuck it in a dark corner, so I mapped it, and played it through. I still have that map left somewhere.
Steve Perry 2003-06-07
For me, Pitfall 2 was hard work to play, a chore even. There were too many rooms with nothing in them; vast open empty spaces that put you to sleep. The graphics served their purpose and the scrolling was smooth enough, but the music and any SFX were pretty unremarkable. I was fortunate enough to finish this game quite quickly, meaning I didn't need to play the game ever again. It went to the back of the drawer and stayed there.
Atari 2003-06-06
Played the 2600 version -fantastic. THe 64 ver has improved graphics so that aint bad. I think I'll have to revisit this one. I still have my 2600 version + the manual/diary. :)
McTrinsic 2003-05-30
I loved it... And only a year ago or so I finally finished it, thanks to emulation...

Be sure to check out the Atari 5200 Version.. Its got a new level! And if you think the game is difficult ... Well... The ectra level is simply EVIL!
TWR 2003-05-23
Great old classic game. The graphics isn't the best ever and the sound is average but the game-play is totally awesome. Addictive and fun as hell.
VicC 2003-04-24
I loved this game. I had forgotten about it for years and then one day I started humming the opening tune from it, not remebering where it was origionally from. This plagued me for about two days until in a FLASH, I remebered this great game. Needless to say I promptly downloaded it and played for several hours, still a really fun game. 9/10
Laner 2003-04-24
Great game - better than the original, IMO. And the SID chip definitely was an asset... Listen to the music on the Atari 2600 version and you'll know what I mean (8-bit audio == out of tune)
Rob Bailey 2003-03-29
My memories of this game are tinged with dumbstruck awe at the sense at the time of its immensity and magical atmospherics.
The mournful almost dirge like quality of the music when you die and are sent for miles back to a cross is simply haunting! I confess to only having finished it recently by sheer persistence and luck!
Didn't know about the balloon and couldn't get passed the first main downward ascent for ages as a kid!
noone 2003-03-23
Very very good follow up to the classic pitfall. If you liked pitfall ... This is a must. Oh ... It's a LOT bigger an less repetetive than the original

This is a classic. Simple gameplay but the sound and atmosphere always grabbed me. You'll keep coming back to it for sure!!

I played this game way too much, I finishet it countless times just to try to make the highest score possible! Probably one of the best games of all times!
Studly 2003-01-06
This game was a lot of fun and took a long time 2 finish aswell. A friend of mine showed me how 2 finish it in like 5 mins, jumped off a few ledges and he was at the end, I couldn't believe it.
surlibur 2002-12-06
It was realy dificult to clear it.. But not imposibile. Can remember there was a contest send by the game if you arive the finish, make a picture send it to activision. Question:where is my price?? :-))

I almost was able to end the game... Ah, the good times !!!
Rami 2002-10-12
I remember how I used to jump against enemies only to hear the sad version the theme tune :) Pitfall II is still my childhood favourite game! Oh, those exciting memories...
Devin de Gruyl 2002-09-16
Pitfall Harry returns in this multi-tiered, multi-level platformer classic. One of the first games of this type to have a definite goal in mind other than getting the highest score possible, your task is to delve into the depths of the underground maze, find and rescue your friends (Rhonda and Quickclaw, both incidentally characters from the short-lived Saturday morning cartoon based on the original Pitfall! Game), and retrieve the lost treasures of an ancient civilization. The caverns are HUGE - you'll definitely want to make a map - and even though the enemy characters move in predictable patterns, it's still difficult to avoid them without some joystick finesse. It was its own loss that it was released during the Great Crash, so it never got the commercial success it deserved. A true winner.

Excellent gaming experience! I remember getting this one back in 1985!

An early game but one of the best in it's genre of flip screen (part scroll) adventure. Fun and simple to play. Recommended download.
