what are ordinate and abscissa?

The distance along the horizontal axis is called as an abscissa. In other words we can say the abscissa is the X-coordinate of a point on the coordinate plane.
And t​he distance along the vertical axis is called as an ordinate. In other words we can say the ordinate is the Y-coordinate of a point on the coordinate plane.

The distance of a point from Y-axis is its X-coordinate or abscissa and that of the point from X-axis is its Y-coordinate or ordinate.
