Wind Energy

Wind energy is a renewable source from the winds and is the second largest source of energy generation in Brazil. Neoenergia is a pioneer in the sector, with 44 wind farms in operation.

A renewable source, wind energy has been growing in the last 15 years in Brazil. Neoenergia is a pioneer in investments in the sector in the country, and the company's first wind farm, Rio do Fogo (RN), was one of the first in the national territory, operating since 2006.

Today, the company has 44 wind farms in operation, with a capacity of 1,554 MW, generating excellence in energy production and contributing directly and indirectly to the socioeconomic development of these regions. It's more job creation, rationing and sustainability, in a movement for a better country!

What is wind energy?

Wind energy is energy that comes from the winds. It is clean and renewable and, in Brazil, it is already the second largest source of energy generation, behind only hydroelectric plants. Using an inexhaustible and easily accessible resource as a raw material, it does not emit pollutants into the atmosphere while transforming it into energy to supply consumers.

How does wind energy work?

For the wind to transform into energy, it needs to power the wind turbines. How it works: the force of the wind drives the blades and this mechanical movement is then transmitted to an internal multiplier box, responsible for boosting the energy created from there. The box, connected to a generator, transforms mechanical energy into electrical energy. Wind turbines, on the other hand, are towers with three swivel blades, and each of these devices, according to its power, has the capacity to serve an average of 9,000 people with moderate consumption.

The more wind, the more energy. That's why wind turbines are installed in high regions, to capture as much wind as possible and make this process happen. An interesting fact is that wind farms can even be built on the high seas - they are called offshore (those that remain on land are the onshore).

Advantages of wind energy

The environmental factor is one of the most outstanding among the benefits of wind energy. The energy produced through the winds is sustainable and does not emit any polluting elements. In a low-carbon economy, it proves to be fundamental and allows for less dependence on fossil fuels. In addition, the wind is an inexhaustible source and there are no restrictions on its use.

Which state produces the most wind energy in Brazil?

Wind energy accounts for 20% of the energy generation that Brazil needs, and the sector stands out in the Northeast region, which is home to 85% of Brazilian wind farms. The favorable geographical conditions of this region allow the richest winds to occur for energy production. According to the 2023 Infovento report from the Brazilian Wind Energy Association (ABEEólica), Rio Grande do Norte is the largest producer of wind energy in Brazil. Bahia and Piauí are ranked second and third, respectively.
