News Sf.vi::i WALL STUEET, NEW YOUK, April 2. In the last hour of the stock market to-day speculative issues were almost buoyant, particularly those representing materials that will be needed for war. United States Steel waa the leader, with a net advance for the day of 2 points. Shipping shares, the coppers and motor stocks were other strong features. Some of the high-grade specialties made sharo advances, notably Ohio Cities Gas, tlanatic, Gulf and West Indies, Bethlehem American Woolen, Crqclble and Industrial Alcohol.

The enthusiasm extended to the curb, where Aetna Explosives and Central Foundry made new records for the movement. Most of these special advances were due to a belief that' war would soon be declared. There is a remarkable difference of opinion among bankers as to the effect of a declaration of war. Thoso versed in military affairs insist that It will not shorten the struggle, but those who pay most attention to food supplies believe that the war is liable to collapse within a few weeks. If not days, after the United States enters it.

Some of the most earnest advocates of war are such, because they believe the declaration will be followed closely by a revolution in Germany. Did you hear a noise in your engine?" Tom pulled up and admitted the Impeachment. Then the small boy cut the string and produced the tomato can. "My cousin telephoned that you would give me four bits if I showed you what was wrong.

Say, Mister Ciowley, gimme a dollar I got to divvy up." Tow Crowley gave up two dollars, and merely smiled when the family cried "April Fool!" SHE GETS HER PIANO. Miss Tjlllian Hergersen was exactly fifteen years old at 9:04 o'clock last Saturday night. Exactly at that moment her father, captain of the Beadle steamer Phoenix, took the steamer Saginaw under tow In distress. Now, lt seems that Miss Lillian is gifted with a very' noticeable musical talent and has wanted a piano. Her father promised to get her one when she was flftpen years old.

About 4 o'clock Captain Bergersen was thinking about that piano. He could arrange to buy one on the Installment plan, and he promised himself to surprise his daughter with a piano as soon as the Phoenix arrived. Then there came a shout from the lookout, and the Saginaw was reported In distress. Her tallshaft had broken. "Salvage." The thrill of the word passed along the decks of the Phoenix and tt took only a few moments for the crew to get ready.

But It was blowing great guns from the northwest and it was not until four minutes past 9 that the warp was finally passed and made fast between the two steamers. So there will he a division of salvage between the officers and crew of the Phoenix, and, whatever the captain's pro rata, it is certain that It will be enough to buy a piano. TENYO BRINGS NOTABLES.
