Temperamental ovens, live people, and more HELEN MAGUIRE Here's Helen i i Bits and pieces. After spending a good part of two frustrating days on the phone to Social Security, and hearing a recorded message which I could probably have repeated verbatim after hearing it interminable times, I finally dialed the agency's 800 number and was connected to a live person within two minutes. Here's a hint if you ever have to get in touch with them: Don't call the Newark office (973-645-2980). That's a lost cause. Try 1-800-772-1213.

Hope you all had a great Thariksgiving. Dinner in our family is always at Nora's house. We numbered (including the kids) 16 this year. Ate Ava's Portuguese stuffing and the bravest drank Avo's homemade wine. That's one potent brew.

It wouldn't be a holiday, however, if something didn't go wrong. It was my turn for "disaster" this year. My oven quit, gave up, whatever you want to call it, just as I was ready to mix up the pumpkin pie. Erin, who lives half a block away, carted the ingredients to her house and baked the goodies. Reminded me of my newest daughter-in-law, Amy, a great Juliano-Mauriello troth is announced cook, who invited her parents down for Thanksgiving two years ago.

Spent a week selecting the menu, preparing the food and discovered that her oven had given up just as she was ready to put in the bird. They ended up going to a local restaurant which I'm sure was a big disappointment to her and her family, who, incidentally, had traveled to Atlanta from Raleigh, N.C. for the feast. She thought my stove debacle was quite amusing. I didn't.

My oldest grandchild has taken a strong liking to ice skating. Goes happily off with his Uncle John to whichever rink has a free skating night. And that doesn't mean you don't pay. The youngest has decided he likes to be on his feet. Can't walk yet, has barely begun to crawl, but pulls himself up on whatever will (or won't) support him.

the late James Juliano and a graduate of Bloomfield High School, attends Montclair State University. She is a teacher at North Ward Center, Newark. Mr. Mauriello, also a Bloomfield High School alumnus, is a service consultant with Tri-county Lexus, Little Falls. Roseann Juliano of Bloomfield announces the engagement of her daughter, Marialana, to Rocco Michael Muriello, son of Joan Mauriello of Bloomfield and the late Rocco Mauriello Sr.

The wedding is planned for Nov. 18, 2005. Miss Juliano, daughter also of.
