Biography: Lou Costello started his career in burlesque and vaudeville theatre where he met his comedic partner Bud Abbott. Costello was the funny man for Abbott's straight performance. Their most famous routine is "Who's On First?" involving confusion over nicknames of baseball players. The two worked theatre circuits, and eventually earned roles on the radio show "The Kate Smith Hour" in 1938 which provided them national exposure.

The duo's first role in film was "A Night in the Tropics" (1940) and was so well received that they were given starring roles thereafter, making 36 films over the next 15 years. During their heyday they were one of Hollywood's most successful and well-paid acts. They also had the radio show "The Abbott and Costello" which ran from 1942-1949, and a television program with the same name from 1953-1955.

After a sometimes fractious working relationship, Costello parted ways with Abbot in 1957. He died of a heart attack in 1959, three days before his 53rd birthday.
