As long as no one asks me to stop, I'll continue with these threads. I am reading every reply, and I'm enjoying all the stories.

So, the NGPC? Did you play it back in the day? Did you try it? Or did you only get to try the Switch ports / other emulation?

Have you ever played a Sega Master System game? Sega - Retro

I had 2 or 3 friends with Sega Master System, and I was a big fan of their games. They had Sonic games, Alex Kidd, Disney stuff?, and others. I had neither the Master System, nor the NES. I only got enough money for my first console in the 16-bit era. My favourite Sega Master System game is...

I played a physical NGPC once and I do not remember where I played it. The SNK vs. Capcom games of that era were really cute and fun for portable games.

I was in Tokyo in 2013. I bought a briefcase full of game stuff. I saw a neo geo pocket, and I was close to buying it. But no, sadly. I've enjoyed a few ports though.

I will go down fighting that SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium was not only *the* best portable fighting created but one of the best fighting games period.

I loved that game so much I even wrote an extensive FAQ on it. And that clicks stick was the best for pulling off specials. I still kinda wish I could get a fightpad that had that in place of a d-pad.

So, yeah, if you can't tell I've been around the block with one before. Clear case 4 lyfe.

I won one of these from an after school TV show giveaway. I wasn't impressed back then with whatever Sonic game it came with and sold it a month later.

I bought one back in college at Fred Meyer when it was recently released. I bought way too many games for it as college kids do and even imported a couple games that only got released in Europe. It was a fun little handheld and SNK vs Capcom was amazing.

Nope.

No Neo Geo Pocket/Pocket Color, no Wonderswan, no TG-16, no 3DO, no Jaguar, no Virtuaboy. Otherwise, I've played every major brand system of the last 35 years.

I do think I may have once played a round of some game on the Lynx...? But maybe not.

Also, of all those systems the only one I remember even seeing on shelves was the NGP in a Funcoland in Sioux Falls. I remember wanting to buy it because they also had a copy of SNK/Capcom but I was like $40 short in my wallet for all of them.

I've always wanted to try a Neo Geo Pocket Color for that joystick. Never got the chance, however.

Never even seen one and I don't think I've played any games even via emulation. I love NeoGeo games though but I've never seen the appeal of their downgraded versions.

Yeah, I have had one for a long time. Only have six games for it, though.

I got a NGPC when Electronics Boutique got what I am guessing was a warehouse full of unsold stock, great system, it's still kicking around for me.

Nope, for years I thought about getting one though if only to play Sonic Pocket Adventure but it wasn't worth it to me. Now I'm just hoping the game pops up on a future NGPC collection on Switch or a core gets made for the Analogue Pocket so I can finally try it.

Yes, the system was pretty popular between my friends and I when it hit the US. I bought the Sonic Adventure system and a good amount of the US library. I also imported games like Tactics Ogre and Mega Man The Power Battles.

The clicky stick was fantastic for fighting games. MotM was a lot of fun back then, and we were obsessed with Card Fighters' Clash for a while. I even used the Dreamcast cable to easily earn points in MotM and unlock characters in Capcom vs. SNK.

Last thing I did was buy a 2nd revision slim console (with the cursive "Color" on the screen) from Japan.

I had one as a kid, weirdly enough. A relative got me and my sister one for Christmas, alongside the Sonic game on it. Lovely little machine, always wondered why I couldn't ever find more games for it.

I still have my silver Neo Geo Pocket Color that I bought in the mid-2000s that came with six games. I forget I still have it sometimes. Lol.

Oh it's definitely retro - the XBOX 360 is retro by any sensible metric too! - but it was much bigger than the PCE or MS ever were, is all I'm wondering about.
Once we've had one more gen then 360/PS3 can be classed as retro. Though it does sound weird thinking about this way given how many games from that period have been ported forward to either current or last gen hardware.

Isn't that recent enough that a "have you ever played....?" a bit too soon for a thread? Master System and PC-Engine occupy this space where a lot of folks never even heard of them, judging by the threads.

DC is 25 years old. By most metrics that qualifies it as retro.
The reason why these threads are interesting to me, is partly those poll results that I can compare between threads, but also the stories people tell. How they first got to try it, what games they have tried, or just the confusing among those that only recently even heard about the console.

So I want a Dreamcast thread, if people are not sick of these threads by then.

Still the best place to play a portable 2D fighter and the best digital TCG.

I normally don't keep old consoles or games, but I love the NGPC so much and I've only owned 2 games on it.

Don't miss out on the digital re-releases.

The 360 is nearly 5 years older now than the SNES was when we were playing on the 360.

If you were 5 when the 360 came out, you'd be legally an adult today.

It's already retro. You are already an old man.

That is amazing!

Thank you! I've got a hefty NGPC collection - Still building it though. Here are some of my favourite oddities:

The Neo Geo Pocket Wireless connectivity adapter!

This was used in-place of a link-cable to play multiplayer games wirelessly. It requires a AAA battery to power, and has a surprisingly heavy "antenna on a cord". I've actually got two of these but haven't gotten around to trying them out yet

Neo Geo Pocket Games in a Blister pack!

So this one is great - when SNK went bankrupt all the remaining stock was liquidised. It was bought up by some company who binned all the boxes and started releasing the games in 4-pack blisters. Some of them even came with a console! There's a few different permutations of the blisters with different selections of games, which is why you can find unboxed variations of some really rare "boxed" games quite easily and cheaply. This variation however I've never seen anywhere else than where I bought it

Boxed European Neo Geo Pocket
Pretty hard to come by as they weren't on sale for very long. The original black and white NGP, but in European packaging. The unit is identical to the Japanese one which is pretty easy to find online, but with EU packaging

Oh man, did I ever. I got the Black NGPC with Sonic back when it came out. Got it at the Babbage's in my mall in Wilmington, NC. RIP Babbages. It all came from me spotting the box for Metal Slug First Mission before it all came out. I asked the manager what it was, because my friend and I were obsessed with Metal Slug. He said, that's coming out for the Neo Geo Pocket Color. And I was sold.

I bought one and was blown away. I first had Sonic (which was great). Metal Slug First Mission (finally had MS in the palm of my hand!). The start up was so cool. I adored the GameBoy Color and this blew it out of the water. The graphics! The clicky thumbstick! I could turn it on without a game and there was an internal clock! (Which is why it needed a weird circular battery, more on that later).

Other games trickled out and I gobbled them up. Match of the Millennium was soon mine and man, it was a favorite between my friend and I. We'd trade between each other on road trips to our junior tennis tournaments. I think we were 11-12 at the time?

Then one day, after a tennis tournament I had done well in, I convinced my parents to swing by Babbages because I had seen game previews in a few mags about Metal Slug Second Mission. They agreed. I had no hope it would be there, and there it was! One of my happiest gaming memories. I picked it up played it to death. Went down to Florida for tennis camp with my friend and we devoured the game.

Such fond memories. Eventually, my interest in the system cooled and I set it down for a few months. I think a year or two later I picked it up. It would not turn on. Black screen. Something had fucked up the internal system. I was so depressed. And it was gone. This was like 2002. The NGCP had come and gone and the world was worse for it.

The reason I got the DC is because my family didn't have a lot of money, the PS2 was Ā£299. In it's last year DC was available new by that time for Ā£130, also I was a Sega die hard since 1989, so I wanted the Dreamcast. So Christmas 2001 I got a Dreamcast and I fucking loved it, I traded in the bundled UEFA football game that came with it still new in it's box. The first DC game I played was Sega Rally 2.

What are some of the must play/best games for the system?

Imo:
  • Sonic Pocket Adventure
  • Puzzle Link (1 or 2)
  • Card Fighters Clash (Either version)
  • Faselei!
  • Dark Arms: Beast Buster
  • Any of the fighting games - they're all good. Lets say SNK vs Capcom Match Of the Millennium
  • Metal Slug (1 or 2 - more like platformers than arcade MS but still fun)
To be honest, most of the games on NGPC are pretty good. There's some exceptions to this (Casino games), and some of the "arcade" games (Crush Roller, Pac man etc.) perhaps won't hold your attention for too long, but overall the quality bar is pretty high.
