Saturn's Lunar Silver Star Story comes in two flavours; The standard release has small boarded FMV. It was later re-released to take advantage of the MPEG card for almost full screen FMV.

Lunar2 needed no such treatment, But it's my favourite game out of the two.

Lunar sure does look excellent! I started playing the series on psp first, but those Saturn games look really good! What are the best versions to play in 2020?

Another weird game I've heard is great and I never tried is

Mr. Bones
Released Sep 30, 1996. In Mr. Bones players take control of an undead blues musician who must destroy the evil vampire who brought him back to life.
209408-mrbones02.jpg
209407-mrbones01.jpg
209406-mr__bones.jpg

I hope I get to try it one day. Seeing all these great games I wish we someday got a sega saturn mini :
Mr Bones is great in every sense except actually playing it. It's so frustrating and awful to play. I wanted to love it so badly because thematically, visually, and aurally, it's fantastic. I managed to beat it but I highly suggest watching someone else do a playthrough instead of trying yourself. The frozen lake level will make you hate the world.

Oh yes certainly I did, D is fantastic. Kenji Eno was a amazing developer and his works are truly special.

On the Saturn I also highly recommend Enemy Zero, to this day there really isn't anything quite like. Also that soundtrack by Michael Nyman is something to behold.

Virtua Fighter was a huge hit on Saturn, but had a few oddities too. VF Kids has been shown already, how about

Virtua Fighter
Fighting 3D game, published by Sega Enterprises, Ltd., which was released in the United States of America in 1995 for the Sega Saturn. My brother had this, and it seemed outdated because he got it the same time as....

Holy crap. I played a lot of Baku Baku but I had totally forgotten. Thanks for reminding me of such good memories.

Thank you Krejlooc, I love it when you explain stuff like that :)

Madou Monogatari would be localized/translated as Sorcery Saga. It spawned the Puyo Puyo series...assuming you didn't know :P

Great thread. Brings back a lot of memories. Loved the Saturn but unfortunately I have much regret selling it and games like Panzer Saga especially them being so rare and expensive. Back as a kid the games were expensive so I didn't get all the ones I wanted like Dragon Force. It's a shame the Saturn gets no love when it comes to ports. Fighters Megamix/Bomberman/Saga et al are all seemingly left behind.

This thread is such a mixed bag. I'm so nostalgic for all the games I've played and own. So sad for all the games I've lost or stupidly sold over the years. Or so annoyed to see so many beautiful looking games I've somehow never even heard of.
Damn you!!

I'm a little bitter than I got a Saturn when I was too young to play all of the cool games that older audiences were playing. I was stuck with mostly garbage, of course I was too young and stupid also to realize what kind of games were available to me. So having a Saturn didn't do much for me.

Cool and interesting Sega Dreamcast games

Deep Fear was the last game released in Europe for the Saturn if memory serves and also the last one I bought for the system. It was a surprisingly ambitious RE clone. Man, I'd love to replay that one.
At this point I was pretty bitter about all the amazing games that were being released in Japan and not in the west (with some even being ported to the psone and released in the west by Sony to add insult to injury), not to mention the cancellation of my 2 most anticipated games, Sonic Xtreme and VF3.
Towards the end of 98 I moved to the PSone and never looked back.

I love how you've just made this thread an anthology of all saturn games, Tailzo - acknowledging what all Saturn true-believers already know: All saturn games are weird and all saturn games are beautiful.

I actually still own this. I highly recommend anyone who's interested check it out - it had a really specific sense of humor, along the lines of Tim Schafer, even if the actual gameplay was just a compilation of really messy mini games.

Bug
This game was weird, but not beautiful.

wtf man

I adore Bug!'s artstyle, you take that shit back.

Shinobi Legions
Developed by Sega AM7 R&D Division Released 1995
197972-shinobi-legions-sega-saturn-screenshot-split-em-in-half.jpg
197978-shinobi-legions-sega-saturn-screenshot-climbing-the-trees.jpg
197991-shinobi-legions-sega-saturn-screenshot-this-enemy-is-huge.jpg

This game is such an underrated entry in the Shinobi series - it's gameplay is pretty good. What you haven't featured here were the amazingly cheesy FMV cutscenes

The main game's artstyle is honestly really cool too - I loved these attempts at digitization and would love to see some more modern attempts at them.
