Apart from the stunning cinematography and some convincing performances, this movie is a recycled crime noir, half-baked with clichés of the genre. The hero is a lonesome, emotionally wrecked detective who becomes too personally involved in a case. No reason is offered for the detective's sudden deepened interest in the case, and most plot conflicts in the film are sidestepped without providing real solutions.
