Gulf of Orosei: The 10 Most Beautiful Beaches on the Sardinian East Coast

The Gulf of Orosei is part of the Sardinian east coast, characterised by clear sandy beaches, clear turquoise sea, high cliffs and unspoilt nature. It is the perfect place for regenerating holidays in close contact with nature, far from the noisiest and most exuberant nightlife. The beaches here are all wonderful, in fact, whichever one you come across we are sure it will be a paradise. But, if you are someone who likes to plan the stages of your trip in advance and with precision, below we suggest 10 truly splendid ones. Put them on your list of places to see in Sardinia!

Cala Ginepro

Cala Ginepro is one of the most famous beaches in this area. White sand, crystal-clear sea and a shallow, sandy seabed ideal for children to play in the water. Behind it is a wonderful pine forest of junipers and sand dunes from which several paths lead to the beaches of Cala Liberotto. In summer, this beach is very popular and provides many services for a relaxing holiday.

Sa Curcurica

The beach of Sa Curcurica is attached to the beach of Cala Ginepro so much so that they are often considered a single beach due to their very similar characteristics. To the north, however, is the pond of the same name where a wide variety of animals live, such as the cormorant, the heron and the Sardinian tree frog, which can be discovered on walks and horseback excursions. And after the walk, a nice dip in its blue sea!

Cala Liberotto

Cala Liberotto is a small hamlet of Orosei inhabited by many holiday homes and holiday villages. Its main beach is of course the beach by the same name, a bay surrounded by granite rocks. It is the ideal destination for a stress-free day because the beach offers all the most sought-after facilities including bathing establishments and kiosks where one can refresh oneself with an ice cream but also have lunch overlooking the sea.

Orosei, Cala Liberotto beach

Marina di Orosei

If your favourite part of your holiday is spending the day underwater, you will love the Marina di Orosei beach. Accessible on foot from the centre of the town of Orosei, divers love this beach because among its life-rich seabed you can also see one of the best-preserved wrecks in the Sardinian sea, the KT12, a German shipwreck that sank in 1943 during World War II. The wreck lies at a depth of about 34 metres and it is still possible to see the cannon pointing upwards as if, before sinking, the ship was trying to defend itself against an air danger.

Su Barone Beach

Cycling holidaymakers adore Su Barone beach because it is surrounded by many paths through nature that can be travelled by bicycle but also on foot. To maintain this pristine state, there are also few services offered, only a car park and a small kiosk. The water soon becomes deep so be careful if you cannot swim or if you visit with small children.

Osalla Beach

Osalla is a beach almost five kilometres long and characterised by fine golden sand. Cliffs border it, giving it the appearance of a quiet and intimate cove ideal for a relaxing beach break. But there is no shortage of activities to do here either. You can set off to explore the water birds that populate the pond formed by the Osalla rivulet and the mouth of Lake Cedrino behind it.

Oasi di Bidderosa, giugno 2010

Bidderosa

Bidderosa beach is immersed in a natural oasis of around 800 hectares of wilderness, a true paradise for lovers of natural environments. The beach is divided into five coves with shallow waters and intense colours. Perfect for a relaxing family day out, but be warned, the oasis is closed and access is limited to 130 cars per day, so if you plan to visit in high season, it is best to book entry online.

Porto Corallo

Porto Corallo can be considered the natural continuation of Cala Liberotto. It is a real natural jewel that is in fact taken by storm in high season and especially by families with children who feel free to let them play here thanks to the gently sloping seabed. Needless to say, even here the colour of the water leaves one truly speechless!

Cala Fuile ‘e Mare

Cala Fuile ‘e Mare is a small cove that is perfect for those who like to experience the sea in solitude and relaxation. In fact, it is never crowded even in the summer months. Here too, the seabed is shallow and sandy, making it perfect for children new to swimming. Depending on the swell, seagrass is occasionally deposited on the shore, but it should be remembered that for the sake of the sustainability of the area it should not be removed, also because the presence of seagrass tends to be considered a good indicator of the quality of sea water.

Sa Mattanosa

Fine white sand, an almost pink shore and turquoise sea. These are the colours of Sa Mattanosa, a beach easily reachble from one of the paths in the Cala Ginepro pine forest. To stay away from the summer crowds, we recommend reaching the northern part of the beach, which is decidedly less crowded. There is also a well-marked dog beach nearby, because even small dogs deserve to play and dive into the beautiful Sardinian sea.

A boat trip to discover the most beautiful coves on the east coast

For an out-of-town excursion, we recommend a boat trip to discover the coves on the east coast. Let’s talk about Cala Goloritzé, a cove hidden in the mountains that gives off breathtaking colours that leave even those who live here every day speechless. But also Cala Luna, a stupendous tongue of sand between two living cliffs, Cala Mariolu, a marvellous little beach consisting of sand mixed with white and pink pebbles, and Cala Biriola and its emerald sea.

These beaches are only accessible by sea or through medium-level hikes among the Mediterranean maquis. If you are a hiking enthusiast, we absolutely recommend you take one of the paths leading to these coves. If, on the other hand, you prefer the convenience of an excursion by boat, know that many are organised with departures from Baunei, Cala Gonone and Orosei, but if you don’t like organised excursions, you could always hire a boat just for you and your travelling companion and sail alone in the waters of the gulf.
