BIOGRAPHY

Shaman was formed in 2000, when Ricardo Confessori left Angra and started a new band:
Shaman.
Shaman means "the one that can see in the dark", and it is represented, in general, by the
priests that can heal using elements of the nature.
Mixing heavy metal, classical music and world music, the band recorded its debut album,
Ritual, in the beginning of 2002. The album was recorded in Germany, except for some
parts recorded in Brazil, and was produced by the famous Sascha Paeth (Heavens Gate,
Rapsody).
Ritual had good reviews by the Brazilian press and all around the world, being released in
more than 15 countries. The World Ritual Tour lasted for over a year and a half, crossing
Brazil and many other countries in Latin America, Europe and Asia. More than 150 shows
were played, an excellent mark for a debut album tour.
In 2003, Shaman had a good position in the specialized media charts, and a great surprise
came when Ritual was elected the best (not only heavy metal) album of 2002 by Folha de
Sao Paulo (a very well-known and respected Brazilian daily newspaper) readers. The same
accomplishment was repeated in 2004. Still in 2004, the band was the opening act for Iron
Maiden at the Pacaembu stadium in So Paulo, for an audience of approximately 45.000
people.
To celebrate the huge success, the band decided to register a special live show on DVD.
The concert was sold out in Credicard Hall, So Paulo, with fans and friends, filling the
stage with special guests like Tobias Sammet, Sascha Paeth, Marcus Viana and George
Mouzayek, Andi Deris and Michael Weikath. The release of RituAlive, in CD and DVD, got
great reviews and sales too. According to Universal Music of Brazil, RituAlive is the best
DVD of the genre released in Brazil, due to the content and the quality.
In 2005, with the second studio album practically finished and ready to be released, the
name of the band was changed. The band decided to add an A to it, so the new
name became Shaaman.
On the following months, Reason, the second studio release, reached the stores. The album
was recorded in Brazil , produced by the very same Sacha Paeth, who stated that Reason
was the rescue of all heaviness, feeling and heavy-metal spirit of the 80s and that while
Ritual favored the undeniable and exceptional skills of the musicians, Reason opened up
space for their hearts and souls. The music was more organic, and helped to highlight the
contrast between heavy guitars, classic keyboards and world music elements.
After the Reason Tour, that lasted one year, some misunderstandings caused the departure
of 3 members, and their abandon of the band opened up space to Thiago Bianchi, Lo
Mancini and Fernando Quesada.
In 2007, these new members, together with Ricardo Confessori, released Immortal CD, by
Scarlet Record - Europe and JVC Victor - Japan. Immortal was out to the end of June, and
had a lot of great reviews from worldwide.
In 2008, Shaman recorded their new DVD in July 20th at Anime Friends 2008, a very
famous Manga Fair in Brazil.
With their whole team, the band could show what they know best for about 18 thousand
people and a set list with new and old songs.
The DVD it will be out in the beginning 2009 and it will bring very nice surprises for the
fans: stories about the change, how it was to record Immortal, backstage scenes and the
day by day of the biggest Heavy Metal band in Brazil nowadays.
In 2009 SHAMAN performed headliner with Orchestra at the MASTERS OF ROCK FESTIVAL in
Vizovice, Czech Republic front 30000 people. We recorded this unforgettable performance.
Live MASTERS OF ROCK DVD + NEW CD will be out in early 2010 in a special BOX SET with a
Shaman10Annyersary Book format A4 in 350 colors pages, and we are sure, it will be
another success to add at the IMMORTAL BRAZILIAN BAND.

IMMORTAL CD - WORLDWIDE PRESS REVIEWS

Ricardo Confessori cleaned up the house in 2006, remaining the only active member of
Shaman due to "musical differences" with former band mates Andr Matos, Hugo & Luis
Mariutti and Fabio Ribeiro. After posting two studio releases since their previous split from
Angra, could the Brazilian scene handle another split? Well, 2007 brought us the answer
with a new lineup and a new fantastic album, Immortal.

With Lo Mancini filling in on guitars, Fernando Quesada on bass and Thiago Bianchi on
vocals, the band struck gold to recreate the golden years of Brazilian Metal. Obviously
oriented more progressive than ever due to Ricardo's drumming, this Immortal brings
furious heavy tunes and power ballads back to life.

Sure, the vocal style is very similar to Andr Matos but why complain? After all, that is what
we would expect as Angra did the exact same thing when Andr left the band and replaced
him by Edu Falaschi. The accentuated progressive edge of the songs renders this album the
best thing coming out of the diverse projects created from the ashes of the original Angra
lineup since 1996's Holy Land. With enraged guitar work and epic compositions, this new
Shaman has seduced my musical senses like never before. Songs like 'Strength' and
'Freedom' embody the essence of the new Shaman, fast, catchy and technical.

It remains Power Metal by all aspect as it is clear on the opener 'Inside Chains', and a
handful of songs might be perceived as too cheesy. However, I strongly believe that this
album is the start of something bigger. The band is younger and the new musicians all have
something new to offer.

If you liked the previous Shaman albums, I strongly encourage you to check out Andr
Matos solo project instead. On the other hand, if the thought of hearing great prog power
appeals to you Immortal is definitely for you. You are standing in front of one of 2007's
best progressive metal albums, and surely one of the surprises of the year. Now, we know
what musical differences arose between Confessori and his former band mates.

I listened to the demo versions like 6 months ago, I remember that I liked them but I don't
know what I would think today. But Shaman remain one of the best power metal bands
there is, so I guess I should hear it.

This album is very good, it deserves the credit that has receveid. Ricardo Confessori has
the whole merit, for not giving up of this excellent band. I honestly think that this member
change that happened in the band was for the better for all the parts involved, no doubt
about it. All the songs are extremely catchy, lots of tecnique and strong riffs, beautifull
environments, and amazing vocals. Songs like Immortal, In the Dark, Tribal by Blood or
Strenght are hard to forget. Indeed this band has a lot to give, lots of talent and magic.

Absolutely agree! I would give it a 9. I think this is an excellent album and like you said,
this is the beginning for something bigger. For me, it's their best one. Matos it's an
excellent musician but his voice it's too melodic and sweet for me. I prefer something with
more power like this new Shaman.

Ive Heard both Andr Matos new album "Time to Be Free" and this one of Shaman
"Immortal". I have to say that this album appeals way more to me that the album of Andr
Matos. This album by Shaman is excellent in every term and for me has more quality than
Andr Matos new band, debut album.

[Rating12065870] Excellent combination of power metal, progressive power metal,
symphonic heavy metal and thrash metal with kick-ass vocalist Thiago Bianchi and majestic
drummer Ricardo Confessori (ex-Angra). If you consider yourself a headbanger, I severely
urge you to listen to Immortal at the very first possible opportunity. Immortal is one of the
few albums, that it is impossible to disappoint. If you like metal, that is.

Considering Andre Matos vacated his vocal throne in Angra to form Shaman, it seems
nothing short of ironic that here, five years since their storming debut, we have a second
album from the melodic Power Metal outfit, their first without the driving force behind
their inception. You know what else is ironic? It's actually better than their debut. As a
devoted follower of both Angra and Matos, it's hard for me to admit that new vocalist
Thiago Bianchi does a better job here than Matos ever could, and if Edu Falaschi ever
parted ways with the aforementioned rulers of Brazilian prog/Power Metal, this guy could
certainly step up to the challenge.
What Shaman have done with their money on "Immortal", is take the band's history into
consideration, and ignored all exceptions, creating an album full of blazing Power Metal
anthems that span influence from the likes of Vision Divine, Symphony X and of course,
Angra. Bianchi manages to glide his incredible vocal ability through fields of ethnic flavour,
battling guitar duels, and storming double bass with ease, making every single track on
"Immortal" stand out compared to the ream of disappointing follow ups by top name bands
this year. Opening with the two most uneventful tracks is an obscure move, but it only
improves the quality of the album's second half, making the heavenly "One Life", the
sprawling "Freedom", and the celeritous "Strength" some of the best tracks Angra never
wrote. Ex-Angra stickman Ricardo Confessori is so hot on his kit you'd think his feet were
on fire, and as I mentioned, the vocals are some of the most sublime I've ever heard. A
triumph for both Shaman and Scarlet, if you're looking for your next Power Metal fix and
you're in doubt over what to pick this coming Christmas, you're search is over. Angra,

Most readers know the beginning of Brazilian power metal band, Shaman: it was formed by
Andre Matos, Luis Mariutti and Ricardo Confessori after leaving the legendary Angra. Their
first release 'Ritual' displayed the oft necessary pains of a new genesis. The second studio
release (third work), 'Reason,' showed the promise of coherence and maturity. It was a
pretty good effort. After a successful tour supporting 'Reason,' problems arose and
everybody but Confessori bailed on this fledgling band. Shaman was now on life support,
but Confessori vowed to continue on.
Welcome another new birth as Shaman has filled the empty slots with Fernando Quesada
on bass, Leo Mancini on guitar, and Thiago Bianchi on vocals, all of whom create no blip on
the metal radar. But flying under the radar is not necessarily a bad thing, nor does it mean
a lack of talent. For instance, Mr. Mancini taught for five years at the Conservatrio Musical
Souza Lima and played for Jeff Scott Soto when toured Brazil; and Mr. Bianchi formed to
bands on his own and has done some producing including a work for Angra. Shaman is the
sum of its parts and after listening to 'Immortal,' the whole is even better. 'Immortal' is a
very good album.
First, let me say that the production is brilliant on 'Immortal.' As for the style, this is basic
power metal with a good dash of progressive metal thrown into the mix. After the very
good instrumental intro, 'Renovatti,' we are treated to solid power metal in 'Inside Chains.'
When you hit third cut 'Tribal Blood' you hear the power of Mr. Bianchi's vocals and the
thrilling riffs of Mr. Mancini's guitar. Confessori opens up the title track with some unique
and creative drum work. The song itself is diverse in arrangement proving to be immensely
satisfying.
When I reached the midpoint of the album, I found the second best cut on this work, 'One
Life.' Here we discover the versatility of Biachi's vocals: he's not just another metal
screamer. Confessori is so strong and consistent and with Mr. Quesada on bass, the rhythm
section is mesmerizing. And Mancini shows exceptional creative brilliance. The best song
on the album is, by far, 'In The Dark,' a true power metal balled (I'm a sucker for this stuff).
The arrangement is sweeping in granduer and power. Bianchi is wonderful, strong and
soothing in the same moment. I do not miss Mr. Matos. Mancini inspires with his precise
acoustic and electric delivery.
As we approach the end, we are subjected to some average power metal with only small
glimpses of originality. In a way, we have returned to the growing pains of a band learning
to live with itself. However, there some worthy notes to make. Quesada's bass work is
fantastic on 'Never Yield.' 'Immortal' ends on a more subdued note with simple vocals and
much acoustic guiar on the long 'The Yellow Brick Road.'
Overall, I'm rather impressed with Shaman 2.0. 'Immortal' is a solid effort from a band just
beginning to know each other. I expect good things (again) in the future. Recommended!

As many of you may know, Brazilian Sao Paolo based ProgMetal act Angra suffered a
temporary blow when a major split in their ranks saw singer Andr Matos , bassist Luis
Mariutti and drummer Ricordo Confessori leave in 2000. Angra recovered, the decamping
party would start work on Shaman . But not before Matos travelled to Germany to work on
his solo project Virgo . And while he was over in Europe, he took some time to front
ProgMetal unit Looking Glass Self (started by former Sieges Even trio of guitrist Marcus
Steffan , bassist Oliver Holzwarth and drummer Alex Holzwarth ) and contribute to their
2000 demo Equinox , before returning to Brazil to concentrate on the Melodic Power Metal
geared Shaman !
Which would not mean the end of "solo" endeavours by the band's members. Shaman 's
keyboarder Fabio Ribeiro for instance issued his second solo album The Tide Turns under
the Bleziq Zatsaz moniker in May 2002. Among the guests on this album would feature
Shaaman guitarist Hugo Mariutti and Angra guitarist Kiko Loureiro . Matos participated in
Progressive Rock outfit Abydos (instigated by producer Stefan Glas , it also included singer
Andy Kuntz and drummer Andreas Lill of Vandenplas , and Elegy singer Ian Parry ), and put
in a guest appearance on Brazilian Sagga 's album Planetude .
Shaman 's debut Ritual came in late July 2002, released on Italian label Lucretia for
Europe, Universal for South America, and J VC Victor for Japan. A month later the band
would start Brazilian tour dates, and in March 2003 guitarist Luis Marietti would also join
the ranks of Henceforth . The band signed to AFM in early 2004, and part of the deal
included a re-issue of the debut album in March, the new version adding bonus DVD
material. Meanwhile, NTS released the CD/DVD package Ritualive in May of the same year
(in Japan, it was released on J VC Victor during September).
Shaman would start recordings for their sophomore album Reason (out in May) in early
2005, announcing a subtle name change to Shaaman in February. By October 2006, it
seemed that things for Shaaman had come to an end when an official announcement of fan
club members stated that the band had folded due to "personal and musical differences"
(whre have we heard tht before?). But Ricardo Confessori is not only a more than
excellent drummer, he's also a very persistent little bugger and, taking back the moniker of
Shaman , he reformed the band in lte 2006 with Karma singer Thiago Bianchi , Sunsarah
guitarist Lo Mancini , and bassist Fernando Quesada .
And, you know something? Bianchi has th voice to make forget that Shaman was ever
fronted by the excellent Matos! Truely! To say that the band's come full circle is no small
thing, and we'll still have to wait to see if this line-up holds, but musically everything
sounds wonderfully tight. The album kicks off with the nearly instrumental (only some
faked with keyboards, I'm sure choral singing) shortie "Renovatti", and the title says it all!
I haven't had time to find a website for you to listen to some samples of the new album,
due to a too busy reviewing schedule (and limited access to Internet), but I'm sure you'll
find smething after some surfing on the Net (try shamanimmortal.com for starters). What
with the rather high-pitched and somewhat heady lead singing, and the almost continuous
high pace, comparisons to top German bands in the Melodic Power Metal genre are quickly
made, but you'll have to admit the band has an aftertaste of its own. The band has recently
recorded a video for semi-ballad "In The Dark" (a true ballad coming with album closer "The
Yellow Brick Road" , followed on the album by an unannounced instrumental which partly
resounds with the sounds of a forest) and they will soon embark on a worldwide tour to
promote the album.
Great stuff, even if in the guitar department at least, there's a couple of over-dubs, making
one wonder hw the band is gonna make the same sound on stage without either relying on
a hired hand, or programming.

Aprs Angra, Shaman, Shaaman : revoici Shaman !
Si vous avez manqu le dbut du feuilleton, une piqre de rappel: la scission d'Angra a
donn naissance au Shaman 1ere formule avec Matos, Mariutti et Confessori mais 2 albums
plus tard, la srnit n'est toujours pas au rendez-vous et le batteur se retrouve seul fin
octobre 2006 et s'en est all recruter des compatriotes pour "continuer l'aventure"...
Bonne pioche ?
Aprs une entre en matire sample ("renovatti"), on est en terrain connu avec "inside
chains" et on regrette que Matos n'y pousse pas sa chansonnette tant le refrain semblait
fait pour lui... Avec "tribal by blood", changement de style : fini les prliminaires ! Shaman
2 affirme sa personnalit : le chant se distingue et la guitare enchane avec bonheur...La
voix de Thiago Bianchi se fait ensuite plus profonde dans "immortal" : il montre alors
l'tendue de son talent, va-t-on finir par oublier le fantme d'Andr Matos qui planait
jusqu'alors ? Ct guitare, Leo Mancini fait une dmonstration particulirement dans
"strength" : un passage speed qui dcoiffe, et le solo suscite l'admiration... "freedom"
permet au bassiste de trouver lui aussi sa juste place mais le combo parait s'essouffler un
peu, on sent poindre le dficit d'inspiration alors rien de tel qu'un retour aux sources pour
mettre tout le monde d'accord : "never yield !" sur le modle Angra avec coeurs, rythmique
effrne puis retour au calme bien gr dans la nuance au chant : assurment, Confessori a
dnich l des musiciens qui tiennent la route et qui ne demandent qu' s'affirmer...
Dommage que l'album se termine sur un "the yellow brick road" pas trs original, moins
que l'ambiance qui y rgne (balade acoustique, chant matris, bruitages...) soit un clin
d'oeil "hollyland" : l'album qui a rvl Angra !
Bref, on y croit d'entre : on en a l'eau la bouche mais sans arriver tancher notre soif
Thiago a l'toffe d'un grand chanteur, Leo fait preuve d'une hallucinante habilet
technique et Ricardo n'a rien perdu de sa pche...
Y'a de l'espoir ! Laissons-leur le temps de se dfaire de leur lourd hritage et de nous
convaincre tout fait avec leur prochain album !

Shaman est un cas part. Form par des ex membre de Angra dont le frontman Dd
Matos, le groupe nous a offert un chef d'oeuvre nomm Ritual en 2002 puis un second opus
moins percutant o l'on sentait dj la fin... Aprs seulement 2 albums et un (excellent)
live, le split est bel est bien l, Ricardo Confessori (batteur) restant seul bord du navire
(ici c'est plutt le radeau de la mduse). Il dcide de continuer l'aventure et voil
qu'aujourd'hui dbarque "Immortal", titre vocateur lanc au nez de Matos qui se sent
enfin libre avec son nouvel album solo. Comme la vie est bien faite, les deux albums
sortent en mme temps...
Au vu de la pochette, on sent que le groupe est revenu aux sources, savoir un power
metal teint de musique sud amricaine. Autant le dire de suite, la flamme ne jaillit plus !!
Jamais de la vie je n'aurais dit avoir faire un album de Shaman ici ! Le groupe nous sert
un metal bien ficel certes mais tellement fade ! Les titres s'enchanent inluctablement
sans qu'il en ressorte quelque chose, c'est triste.
De plus le groupe a nettement proguis (une invention de ma part) ses compositions en
rajoutant des solos de guitare et claviers la Dream Theater ("Inside Chains").
Tout n'est pas insipide, la chanson titre et "One Life" me rappellent mes bons souvenirs,
avec leurs accents exotiques forts sympathiques. La power ballade de rigueur "In The Dark"
est russie, sans tre non plus un chef d'oeuvre !
C'est trs rare que je n'arrive pas accrocher un album ce point l, un grand ouf de
soulagement s'est empar de moi lorsque le disque s'est arrt, et mme avec des coutes
supplmentaires je reste sur le mme avis : le groupe joue bien, mais a sent la seconde
zone. Je prfre m'attarder sur l'album solo de Matos qui, lui, est inspir et rcouter un
bon Angra et un bon Ritual des familles !
Shaman reste et restera certainement le groupe d'un seul album, mais fort heureusement
un album de gnie.

"Durchschnittskost aus Sdamerika"

Auch in Brasilien ist Power Metal beheimatet, wie SHAMAN [vor einiger Zeit wegen
Namensstreitigkeiten noch SHAAMAN] beweisen. Die Band wurde im Jahr 2000 von den
ehemaligen ANGRA-Mitgliedern Andre Matos [Gesang, Keyboard], Ricardo Confessori
[Schlagzeug] und Luis Mariutti [Bass] gegrndet. Das Line-Up vervollstndigte Luis Bruder
Hugo an der Gitarre. In dieser Besetzung wurde 2002 das Debut Ritual eingespielt.
Anno 2007 ist von der ursprnglichen Besetzung nur noch Ricardo Confessori brig
geblieben. Mit seinen neuen Mitstreitern wirft er nun das Album Immortal auf den Markt.

Mit Renovatti erffnet ein relativ langes Intro die Scheibe, das in der Dramaturgie wie
die Filmmusik eines orientalischen Streifens daherkommt. Inside Chains, Tribal By
Blood und der Titeltrack sind dann Power Metal-Tracks von der Stange, die keinerlei
Neuheiten mit sich bringen, sodass man nicht nher darauf eingehen muss.
One Life ist das erste Stck, das aus diesem Rahmen fllt. Es beginnt instrumental im Stil
sdamerikanischer Folklore, dann bernimmt sehr ruhiger Gesang die Stimmung, bevor
krftige Riffs den Groove zu einer Mid-Tempo-Halbballade vorantreiben. Die Melodie krallt
sich im Ohr fest und der Refrain ist eingngig. Ein Zwischenspiel mit Lead- und Retro-Orgel-
Solo runden die Nummer ab.
In The Dark ist eine gelungene Ballade mit fast durchgehender Akustik-Untermalung. Es
fllt auf, dass Thiago Bianchis Stimme im ruhigen, gemigten Bereich einen rauhen,
bluesigen Unterton hat, whrend er in den hheren Stimmlagen ein bisschen an Tobias
Sammet erinnert. Strength ist wieder ein Power Metal-Stck, das zu Anfang zwar einige
gute Riffs bietet, danach aber wieder abflacht.
Ein richtiges Highlight ist Freedom. Hier stimmt einfach alles: die Power, die Melodie,
Gesang, Refrain, Soli und ein phnomenales Instrumental-Outro. Auch Never Yield
kommt ganz positiv rber. Der Song wird von einigen Tempowechseln beherrscht, Phasen
melodischer Power wechseln sich mit ruhigeren Abschnitten ab. Klingt aber alles recht
stimmig.
Zuguterletzt folgt noch das ber 8-mintige The Yellow Brick Road. Knapp 4 Minuten lang
ist es eine recht gelungene akustische Ballade, in der Bianchi nochmal sein gesangliches
Knnen beweisen kann. Danach wird der Hrer mit Geruschen des Dschungels
konfrontiert, die teilweise von romantisch klingenden Banjo- und Fltentnen begleitet
werden. Was SHAMANS Hintergrnde zu diesem Arrangement sind, kann ich nicht genau
ergrnden, da wie bei Promos leider blich keine Texte beiliegen. Follow the yellow
brick road ist eigentlich eine Redewendung, die frei bersetzt soviel bedeutet wie Den
Weg zu einem hheren Ziel verfolgen. Mglicherweise ist es dieses verfolgte hhere Ziel
der Band, mit dem Song auf die Problematik durch die Abholzung des brasilianischen
Regenwald aufmerksam zu machen. Das ist aber nur eine Spekulation von mir.
Irgendwelche Informationen kann man auch der bandeigenen Homepage nicht entnehmen.
Vielleicht werden uns SHAMAN irgendwann in dieses Geheimnis noch einweihen. Rein
musikalisch gesehen, kann ich mit dem Song nichts anfangen und finde ihn recht
berflssig.

Im Fazit muss ich leider sagen, dass SHAMAN auf Immortal wenig Klasse bringen.
Hervorzuheben sind der Mid-Tempo-Stampfer One Life und die Power Metal-Hymne
Freedom. Der Rest ist viel Durchschnittsware und Beiwerk. Zu mehr als 4,5 Zhlern kann
es daher nicht reichen.
Positiv anzumerken ist noch der Sngerwechsel. Bianchi hat sicherlich eine grere
Stimmbreite als Matos und kann mehr Abwechslung in die Songs einbringen, wenn diese es
denn zulassen.
Klar negativ muss vermerkt werden, dass Band und Label so gut wie keine brauchbaren
Informationen verffentlichen. Beispielsweise bleibt unklar, wer den nicht unerheblichen
Beitrag am Keyboard geleistet hat.

Do you remember Shamans debut album, Ritual (NTS, 2002)? Featuring three former
members of Angra (Andr Matos, Luis Mariutti and Ricardo Confessori), it was a varied
progmetal album of a very high quality. Lots of gigs followed and their passage at Credicard
Hall in So Paulo (Brazil) in April 2003 was recorded and filmed for a further CD/DVD
release. When RituAlive was released by NTS in 2004, it was well-received by the press
and the fans alike.
In 2005 the band had to change its name (for copyright reasons) and Shaman became
Shaaman. Album # 2, Reason (AFM Records, 2005), saw the band moving into a heavier
direction and this time the style leaned more towards melodic metal than towards
progmetal. After the Reason tour which lasted for about a year, problems started to
cause a split and three members left the band. Out went Andr Matos, Hugo and Luis
Mariutti and in came Thiago Bianchi (v), Leo Mancini (g) and Fernando Quesada (b).
When I first heard about this serious line-up change, I was very disappointed, but now that
Ive had the chance to listen to the the bands brand-new studio album, Immortal
(Scarlet Records), Im glad to report that its a pretty good release in its own right.
Replacing someone like Andr Matos is no sinecure, but Thiago Bianchi reveals himself as a
very good vocalist. And the other new band members are certainly no clumsy oaves as well.
Five years ago the band started as a progmetal band, but in the year 2007 they may easily
be regarded as Brazils best melodic/power metal band. Among the best tracks on offer are
Immortal (featuring an intriguing interlude and brilliant axework of Mancini), In The
Dark (first single), Freedom and The Yellow Brick Road. Thanks to a good balance
between heavier and softer material, this Immortal is surely another well-produced
Shaman album. Agreed, its not as good as its two predecessors, but on the other hand
theres absolutely no reason to write them off. Check it out for yourself!

competitors in BRAZIL ! They don't catch the same MAGIC as they use to have in the first

O Heavy Metal nacional anda passando por momentos realmente estranhos no mesmo?
Afinal, Igor Cavalera deixou o Sepultura, Angra entrou em coma (e ningum sabe at agora
se a banda vai sair disso) e o Shaman se separou. E talvez essa tenha sido a coisa mais
estranha de todas! Afinal para todos aqueles que acompanham a novela envolvendo o grupo
Angra e seus ex-integrantes a impresso que se tinha era de que o Shaman era formando
por pessoas unidas pela amizade mais do que qualquer outra coisa.

Mas o fato que no final de 2006 comeou a rolar os mais variados boatos sobre um
possvel fim da banda, ou que a banda iria continuar com um novo baterista. ento que
todos so pegos de surpresa e o que parecia impossvel aconteceu: em um comunicado ao
f clube, o baterista Ricardo Confessori revela que a banda continuaria sim, mas tendo da
formao original apenas ele! Enquanto que o vocalista Andr Matos acabou por buscar o
caminho da carreira solo (sendo acompanho pelos irmo Mariutti e pelo tecladista Fabio
Ribeiro). Desde ento os antigos fs da banda tm se dividindo entre os que apiam a nova
formao da banda e aqueles que preferem Andr Matos e sua trupe.

A confuso s aumentou ainda mais quando foram anunciados quais eram os novos
integrantes da banda. Afinal, o guitarrista Leo Mancini era desconhecido do grande pblico
e tinha acabado de lanar seu primeiro lbum com a banda Tempestt, e o baixista Fernando
Quesada era um completo desconhecido. Mas acredito que quem mais sofreu com a
descrena tenha sido o vocalista Thiago Bianchi. Afinal, substituir Andr Matos no para
qualquer um e os trabalhos anteriores de Thiago (como as bandas Karma e Vox) pareciam
indicar que o estilo dele no era o mais adequado para cantar na banda (e no eram poucos
os que preferiam outras pessoas assumindo o posto de vocalista do Shaman).

Porm o fato que essa nova formao organizada por Confessori foi capaz de gravar um
lbum de muita qualidade. A comear pelo vocal de Bianchi, que logo na primeira msica
(Inside Chains) mostra a que veio.

Outra grata surpresa foi o ilustre desconhecido Fernando Quesada, que demonstrou no ser
apenas extremamente habilidoso com o baixo (e isso ainda mais impressionante ao
sabermos que antes de entrar na banda ele se dedicava guitarra), como tambm um
timo compositor. Compondo a msica In The Dark e sendo co-autor de tantas outras.
Outro que tambm mostrou ser uma excelente aquisio para a banda na funo de
compositor o guitarrista Leo Mancini (mas isso no novidade para quem conhece o
trabalho que ele realizou junto ao grupo Tempestt).

Mancini, diga-se de passagem elevou para um novo patamar de qualidade a seo de
guitarras da banda. Mantendo a tradio de seu antecessor de criar riffs marcantes ele
trouxe consigo um nvel tcnico e de virtuosidade at ento indito na banda.

O veterano Ricardo Confessori tambm mostrou a que veio, atuando como co-autor de duas
letras de msica e co-autor de vrias msicas. Ele tambm voltou a tocar bateria melhor do
que nunca, cumprindo a sua promessa de criar linhas de bateria to boas quanto as dos
lbuns Ritual e Holy Land.

O grupo ainda conta com o auxlio luxuoso do tecladista Fabrzio Di Sarno (Karma), que
alm de gravar as excelentes linhas de teclado e arranjos presentes no lbum, comps a
msica de introduo Renovatti.

A sonoridade desse novo lbum traz o mais simples e puro Metal Meldico (para o bem ou
para o mal). De fato, Confessori cumpriu meia promessa. Afinal quando a banda se separou
ele alegou que pretendia voltar sonoridade do lbum Ritual, e de fato, Immortal est mais
prximo do Ritual do que o Reason. Mas, a bem da verdade, deve-se dizer que ele se
encontra mais prximo da sonoridade mais tradicional do Metal Meldico, tendo uma
abertura menor para aquele Heavy Metal banhado em world music como foi o primeiro
lbum da banda.

Outro fato marcante desse lbum que ele foi totalmente produzido aqui no Brasil, da
gravao masterizao, tudo foi feito por aqui. Tendo Confessori e Bianchi encarregados
da produo, e gravado nos estdios Fuso VM&T e Plug-in (pertencentes ao vocalista e ao
baterista respectivamente) incrvel como a banda conseguiu atingir uma qualidade de
gravao de nvel internacional. Sem ter que optar por fazer a mixagem ou a masterizao
no estrangeiro. Realmente surpreendente!

Apresentar destaques para esse lbum complicado, pois o considero bastante equilibrado.
Mas impossvel no comentar algumas msicas, como por exemplo Tribal By Blood, que
provavelmente a nica que remete o ouvinte ao lbum Reason devido ao seu peso e
agressividade.

One Life e Immortal so as msicas mais prximas de remeter o ouvinte ao primeiro lbum
da banda. Enquanto a primeira um dos grandes destaques do lbum (graas
principalmente ao vocal do Bianchi), a segunda a pior! Na faixa ttulo a banda parece que
tentou emular a sonoridade do Ritual e do Holy Land (do grupo Angra), mas a msica
acabou parecendo um remake da faixa ttulo do lbum Holy Land, tendo at mesmo um
ndio falando no meio dela.

Por fim gostaria de destacar a msica que encerra o lbum: The Yellow Brick Road. Tanto
pelas belas melodias presentes nela, quanto pela tima interpretao do vocalista. A
msica ainda apresenta uma aura meio experimental que acaba dando um belo final para o
lbum.

Entre os que ficam do lado do Shaman Immortal e dos que ficam do lado do Andr Matos,
eu prefiro ficar do lado da boa msica. E esse lbum sem sombra de dvidas boa msica!
E ponto final.

E a novela que aconteceu com a banda Angra, quando da ruptura do grupo paulistano, se
repetiu com o Shaaman. Aps a turn do lbum Fireworks (1998), as coisas j no andavam
bem com o relacionamento entre os membros da primeira, culminando na sada de Andre
Matos (vocalista), Luis Mariutti (baixista) e Ricardo Confessori (baterista). Fato que, anos
depois, se repetiu com a segunda aps os shows de divulgao de Reason (2005), material
este que recebeu diversas crticas negativas de fs e imprensa mundo afora. Pois bem,
acreditar que aps a retirada dos irmos Mariutti e Andr Matos, Ricardo Confessori
conseguiria manter o Shaaman vivo, certamente poderia pender para o mbito da utopia.
Ledo engano companheiros!

O msico alm de ter remontado a banda com um timao da cena nacional - Thiago Bianchi
(vocal), Leo Mancini (guitarra) e Fernando Quesada (baixo) -, ainda conseguiu lanar o disco
mais consistente da carreira, do agora rebatizado Shaman, o grandioso Immortal. Contando
com elementos que remetem ao debut do conjunto, Ritual (2002), acrescidos de facetas
que faltavam em suas canes, Immortal agrada em todos os aspectos que compem a
obra. Ou ser que um Xam equatoriano genuno na faixa ttulo, agregado ao alto teor de
introspeco da acstica The Yellow Brick Road no seriam tacadas de mestre numa
compilao que simboliza o renascimento do quarteto? Podem apostar que sim! Somado a
tudo isso, acompanhar a evoluo do vocalista Thiago Bianchi algo que imediatamente
salta aos ouvidos. Thiago responsvel pelo lado agressivo indito na sonoridade do grupo,
ressaltado principalmente nas excelentes Freedom, Strenght, Tribal By Blood e
Inside Chains, todas elas numa fria absurda. Por outro lado, as meldicas In The Dark
(belssima balada), One Life (clssica absoluta) e Never Yeld!, servem de contraponto
para ressaltar a complexidade qualitativa dessa nova formao, fundamentada pelos riffs
sempre precisos de Leo Mancini e, principalmente, pela cozinha sempre cativante, levada a
cabo por Ricardo e Fernando.

Mais um grande lanamento da prolfica cena brasileira, que ostenta respeitabilidade
evidente em todo o globo. O Shaman provou que ainda tem muita lenha para queimar e,
sobretudo, muita histria a escrever em sua honrosa carreira. Que venham os shows da
Immortal tour, porque se depender do contedo do CD aqui analisado, ser obrigatria a
presena dos fs de canto a canto do Brasil/Europa/Japo.

01 Renovatti (Intro) - Raphael Finardi
Quem nunca pensou em iniciar um cd com uma introduo prpria? No apenas usar a
criatividade e o esprito para montar algo que inicia o cd, mas deixar de lado as antigas
composies da msica Erudita. Para surpreender e, ao mesmo tempo cria um ambiente e
um espao de suspense para o inicio. Conta com uma percusso marcante, violinos
presentes flautas, criando aquela expectativa que precede a segunda faixa do lbum (Inside
Chains).
uma composio do tecladista convidado da banda Fabrizio de Sarna e foi gravada por
msicos da OSESP.

02 Inside Chains Thales Maciel
Aps o clima tenso e envolvente da Introduo, toda a energia contida liberada na
segunda faixa. Riffs poderosos acompanhados de uma cozinha precisa iniciam a primeira
msica cantada. E por falar em canto, pra quem esperava uma linha vocal mais suave, tero
uma agradvel surpresa ao se deparar com vocais fortes e empolgantes, sem deixar de lado
a linha meldica marcante da banda.
A segunda faixa tem sua letra bem representada pelo ttulo, pois como um grito guardado
sendo liberado, mostrando toda a fora do novo e imortal Shaman. uma composio do
novo guitarrista da banda Leo Mancini e mostra bem, o lado virtuoso acrescentado nessa
nova etapa da historia do Shaman.

03 Tribal By Blood - Raphael Finardi
A msica mais pesada do cd em minha opinio. Um som bem pesado, mostrando
"a cara nova" da formao. No tem como duvidar que Leo Mancini colocou o diferencial
nas novas guitarras do Shaman. A voz de Thiago Bianchi tambm se destaca muito nesta
faixa, o novo vocal da banda acaba mostrando bem verstil, um vocal poderoso, com
rasgados marcantes, e riffs poderosos, uma musica que com certeza ser indispensvel no
set list dos shows.

04 Immortal Thales Maciel
A faixa titulo do lbum retrata as dificuldades superadas pela fora de vontade e grande
unio da nova formao, com um clima envolvente, cheio de Feeling.
Vale o destaque para a Originalidade da banda, ao inserir um trecho de fala feito por um
Shaman verdadeiro, de uma tribo Equatoriana. Assim Immortal, mostra que tudo depende
de todos, e nossos sonhos e desejos so imortais.

05 - One Life Raphael Finardi
O que significa uma vida, diante de um dia que est preste a nascer? A One Life conta com
um violo a l erudita e lembrando as razes mais fortes que o nome Shaman traz a todos.
Algumas coisas foram alteradas da verso
disponibilizada no Site que seria uma Demo. Os sons do universo e de todos os elementos
unidos por um pedal rpido, percusso, flautas e Riffs mostrando que todos devem se unir

Uma msica muito importante para a banda, pois com ela foi responsvel por decidir
quem seria o novo baixista do Shaman.

msicas do disco, sendo escolhida para ser o primeiro vdeo clipe com a nova formao,
que saira junto s msicas do cd tanto aqui quanto no exterior

07 Strenght Raphael Finardi
Uma msica diferente entre as outras faixas, mas no saindo da linha das
outras letras. A faixa fala sobre aqueles dias na vida em que as vezes
Nada da certo, mas que apesar de tudo, temos fora para continuar
Nossa jornada. Nossos sonhos so sempre o que devemos escolher,
Nunca perdendo a esperana de que no poderemos realiz-los.
Conta tambm com a presente a marcante bateria que sempre foi caracterstica nas
composies do Ricardo trazendo de volta levadas e contra tempos fazendo-nos relembrar
passagens do Angra e do Shaman j q essa uma msica que ele j tinha a algum tempo.

08 Freedom Raphael Finardi
Depois da apresentada msica "Be Free", Ricardo e Thiago decidiram mud-la
totalmente. A msica que foi apresentada em muitos show do Shaman, foi reformulada
pelos mesmos e ficou incrvel! O que no passava de uma msica instrumental ganhou letra
e como nas outras faixas Riffs e mais Riffs por Leo Mancini. uma musica que explora
varias levadas de batera que remetem a varias fases da carreira de Ricardo tanto no Angra
quanto no Shaman, apresentando batidas regionais e percusso como sempre. A letra
retrata bem o momento que a banda vem vivendo e tem uma mensagem sobre como as
coisas e as pessoas devem seguir sem rumo e assim serem livres para aquilo que de fato
devem ser.

09 - Never Yield! Thales Maciel
Composta por Fernando Quesada, essa a ultima faixa pesada do lbum, e a ultima a ter
sido includa no mesmo.
A faixa esta em um tom bem alto para a voz, guitarras virtuosas ao Maximo, e claro, conta
com a clssica pegada de bateria de Ricardo Confessori.
uma previa para a ultima faixa do Immortal, a ultima musica q prepara para uma coisa
inedita, nunca feita pela banda em tda sua trajetoria.

10 - The Yellow Brick Road Raphael Finardi
Simplesmente a faixa que faltava para a banda. Uma msica acstica! Rituais indgenas,
tubas, chocalhos... Essa msica diz tudo, momentos para refletir, lembranas de toda uma
vida passada, pensamentos sobre tudo que passou e os caminhos seguidos que foram
traados. Por tudo que tenha acontecido, magoas e momentos difceis, temos que
continuar nossas trajetrias, a partir dai descobrir o verdadeiro sentido da vida. Msica que
encaixou perfeitamente no final do cd e que ficou a cargo da composio de Fernando
Quesada e Thiago Bianchi.

Recensire questo Immortal mi ha creato non pochi problemi, visto la mia devozione
verso Andre Matos come singer e verso gli Shaman come band; oltrepi, anche se uscito lo
scorso anno, ne sono entrato in possesso dopo aver gi assimilato Time To Be Free, e
questo mi rendeva un po scettico sulle capacit (unicamente a livello di idee) di mr.
Confessori.
Ma partiamo dallantefattoMatos e i fratelli Mariutti, dopo il tour di Reason
(secondogenito della band) decidono di uscirsene (o meglio di sciogliere) la loro creatura
Shaaman, visti i problemi legati alle divergenze musicali innescatesi negli ultimi tempiil
quarto elemento, il prodigioso drummer Ricardo Confessori, invece sceglie di riportare in
auge la band, tornando al monicker Shaman e reclutando tre validi e sconosciuti compagni
che lo coaudivino a esprimere il proprio pensiero, in modo da poter personalizzare il sound
senza lausilio dellingombrante (solo a livello compositivo) Matos.

Il risultato di tanto faticare risiede nelle tracce di questo Immortal, album che viene
presentato come la migliore rinascita del combo brasiliano in questione; la prima cosa che
traspare (logicamente) la differenza nelle parti vocali; Thiago Bianchi veramente un
gran cantante, nelle songs ci mette anima e corpo (e immedesimazione) e il materiale
stato sviluppato propriamente per le due doti canore; certo il confronto con Matos arduo,
perch pur che riesca a raggiungere note altissime producendo un falsetto bello e corposo,
il buon Andre rimane al di sopra del giovane brasiliano; a suo favore comunque, rimane la
buona capacit nel raggiungere note profonde dove sicuramente Matos avrebbe trovato pi
difficolt

La seconda differenza sta nelle composizioni; ci sono sempre le parti orchestrali
(Renovatti unintro di tre minuti unicamente orchestrale), la doppia cassa velocissima,
i tempi speed, qualche parte puramente brasileiracome mr. Confessori ci ha ben fatto
conoscere nel corso degli anni, ma il pacchetto risulta nellinsieme pi oscuro rispetto alle
release precedenti e rispetto anche agli stessi Angra del periodo doro; molto incentrato
sulle ritmiche di chitarra, serrate e graffianti le quali fanno emergere maggiormente le
parti vocali, alcune delle quali ricercate e nuove, ma nel contesto generale il platter in
oggetto non aggiunge molto pi di quanto non sia gi stato creato in questo genere.

In maggior dettaglio, oltre alla gi citata Renovatti, spiccano sulle altre come valore e
come esecuzione Immortal, One Life (davvero pregevole) e In The Dark, in cui le
qualit del quartetto si mettono in mostra maggiormente (in certi punti Bianchi ricorda
vagamente Michael Kiske); non male nemmeno le speed songs Strenght e Trial By
Blood, composte da chorus accattivanti e facilmente ricordabili, e un appunto doveroso
farlo anche per la conclusiva acustica The Yellow Brick Road, caratterizzata da arie
molto fresche in cui Bianchi cerca di far dimenticare il proprio predecessore e per Inside
Chaos, che rappresenta il miglior connubbio tra le idee pi grintose e la voce di Bianchi
citate prima nonch nuovo percorso intrapreso dalla band.

Se mi chiedessero di fare un paragone rispetto al nuovo platter dei tre ex membri della
band, direi che a livello di idee Time To Be Free risulta pi ricco, meno lineare a livello
compositivo e anche il sound stesso stato prodotto con maggior mezzi rispetto a
Immortalci non toglie, comunque, che la prova di Confessori e soci sia un ottimo
inizio, un buon punto di partenza dal quale procedere ampliando i propri orizzonti. Le
capacit ci sono e si sentono, quindi

Brasilianische Power Metaller auf unserem italienischen Lieblingslabel... da kann ja gar
keine andere wie die vorliegende Mucke rauskommen. SHAMAN sind die neue Combo von
ex-ANGRA-Schlagzeuger Ricardo Confessori, der die Band zusammen mit ex-ANGRA-Rhre
Andre Matos grndete. Auf dem neuen Werk singt der nicht minder talentierte Thiago
Bianchi. Ein schner Fehler hat sich auch mal wieder auf dem Infoblatt eingeschlichen.
Steht da noch richtigerweise for fans of IRON MAIDEN/ ANGRA/ HELLOWEEN/ GAMMA RAY,
so liest man 2 Zeilen weiter for fans of SLAYER/ KREATOR/ VENOM/ DESTRUCTION/ EXODUS!
Aua!

Natrlich hrt sich "Immortal" wie eine Mische aus den erstgenannten Bands an. Typischer
Melodic Power Metal, wie er im Buche steht und schon bis zum erbrechen auf dem Markt
ist. Auch sind die Herren instrumental alle voll fit, die Produktion ist sehr gut und der
Snger angenehm. Kann man haben, muss man aber nicht. Wie so viele andere gutklassige
Scheiben, die einfach auf Grund der Flle an Verffentlichungen durchs Raster fallen.
Dampfhmmer wie das fette "Tribal by Blood" sind schon absolut gehobenes Niveau und die
brasilianischen Einlagen (z.B.im Titeltrack) kommen geil, aber ich befrchte, dass die
Combo etwas hinten ansteht, falls man nicht auf eine fette Tour hierzulande aufspringen
kann. Die feine Halbballade "In the Dark" ist ebenfalls sehr gelungen, wie eigentlich die
ganze Scheibe.

Melodic-Fans sollten auf jeden Fall mal reinhren und vielleicht eine neue Perle fr sich
entdecken, das Potenzial ist da!

Dans la srie des ridicules changements de nom on pensait RHAPSODY indtrnable avec
son cultissime RHAPSODY OF FIRE mais maintenant on a mieux puisque SHAMAN (qu'on va
finir par appeler le groupe de Ricardo Confessori, a sera plus simple) aprs avoir ajout
un A il y a quelques annes, l'a enlev pour ce nouvel album afin de retrouver son nom
d'origine, savoir SHAMAN. Ca vous la coupe, hein!? Pour continuer sur cette belle lance,
prcisons galement pour couper l'herbe sous le pied des plaisantins de tous bords que
non, SHAMAN n'a pas, malgr le titre de son nouvel album, vir Black Metal (sinon c'est bibi
qui aurait t bien dans la merde).
Ceci tant, ceux qui avaient apprci l'volution du groupe risquent de bien tirer la gueule
puisque le grand chambardement qu'a connu SHAMAN dernirement se ressent fortement
au niveau de la musique. Ainsi, le SHAMAN nouveau est un SHAMAN rsolument Heavy qui,
d'une part sonne parfois franchement comme du ANGRA (voir l'excellent Strengh ou
encore The Yellow Brick Road sur lequel c'est vraiment flagrant) et, d'autre part,
s'aventure ponctuellement dans un registre Power pas compltement matris (voir le titre
Tribal By Blood sur lequel le nouveau chanteur Thiago semble lgrement la peine
pour ne pas dire compltement la ramasse). C'est d'autant plus regrettable que si l'on
met ce titre de ct le bougre s'en sort plus que remarquablement et arriverait presque
faire oublier le nom de celui qu'on ne doit pas prononcer.
Au niveau de la prod, on restera mesur. Plus brute et incisive que celle de "Reason" elle
est tout de mme un poil trop oriente autour de la batterie (il suffit d'entendre l'intro de
Never Yield!) qui a d'ailleurs dans l'ensemble un son un peu trop froid et clinique.
Une petite touche World par-ci (la fin de Immortal), une petite touche la limite du Folk
par-l et nous voil avec un album au final assez vari bien qu'un peu ingal. Enfin, il faut
quand mme avouer qu'on se fait ici nettement moins chier que sur leur prcdent skeud.
Il semble tout de mme vident qu'il faudra attendre un peu (c'est--dire le prochain
album) avant de pouvoir porter un jugement dfinitif sur le SHAMAN Mark II. Et puis bon...
le dbut d'Inside Chains me fait un peu penser au titre America Fuck Yeah! de Team
America donc rien que pour a, chapeau bas messieurs!

Non ne avevamo avuta piu' traccia, dei brasiliani Shaman e in molti li davano ormai per
spacciati, con Andre' Matos tornato in liberta' e Riccardo Confessori, in preda a dover
ricominciare tutto da capo; tranquilli per, dopo qualche assestamento di formazione, (i
nuovi entrati, al fianco di Confessori rispondono al nome di Leo Mancini alla chitarra,
Fernando Quesada al basso e il dotatissimo vocalist Thiago Bianchi) la band di Ritual e
Reason e' pronta a scuotervi col nuovo e potentissimo Immortal.

Il sound del quartetto, dopo qualche sterzata troppo moderna su Reason e' tornato ai
fasti di un power metal melodico, di stampo europeo con inserti etnici (da sempre punto
forte della formazione) e soluzioni corali ad ampio respiro; Renovatti funge solo da intro
per la massiccia Inside Chains, una solida heavy song dai connotati vicini ai nostri Secret
Sphere, di A Time Nevercome, con chitarre robuste e incisive e un cantato di Thiago,
lontano dal timbro di Matos ma per questo, non meno possente ma piu' grintoso e melodico.
Riccardo Confessori dietro le pelli si dimostra come sempre, un drummer dal gusto
pazzesco, preciso e dotato di una tecnica invidiabile e anche il nuovo chitarrista Leo e il
bassista Fernando, giocano bene i loro assi, sfoderando una prestazione davvero da
applausi. Partenza coi fiocchi bissata da Trial By Blood, speed track sulla falsa riga dei
Judas Priest dal cantato violentissimo di Thiago e spezzata da un coro power/thrash,
perfetto per scatenare le folle ai concerti.
Se da un lato le sonorita' si son fatte meno pompose e orchestrali, c'e' da dire che la nuova
incarnazione degli Shaman e' riuscita a rinnovarsi, senza cadere nel banale o nella
fotocopia di loro stessi; tanto di cappello davvero ragazzi. Immortal viaggia su territori
pi standard, tutta giocata su un tappeto di melodie tra il tribale (soprattutto nell'inizio) e
accellerazioni speed nel coro, creando un ponte col passato della band, mentre One Life
e' la vera perla di questo Immortal. Flauti, chitarre acustiche e tanta voglia di ampi spazi
e distese infinite, ci avvolgono in questo brano a cavallo tra i migliori Angra/Shaman, con
un Thiago davvero superlativo a creare melodie semplicemente vincenti; complimenti
ragazzi..un brano entusiasmante!
Ballad emozionante e malinconica e' In The Dark, dove il fantasma dei vecchi Shaman di
Ritual con spruzzate di rock, emerge prepotentemente creando un'atmosfera eterea e
lanciando il brano, tra i pi belli del cd; si torna a correre veloci con la tirata Strenght,
dai rimandi ancora una volta ai Secret Sphere ma dalla parte centrale made in Shaman,
con soli incrociati e una batteria sincopata, di incredibile spessore. Anche Freedom si
assesta su tempi veloci e cori di matrice power ma con risultati inferiori, risultando un po'
scontata mentre tutt'altra cosa con Never Yield!, dettata dalla doppia cassa di Confessori
e costruita su linee melodiche Helloween/Angra, di ottima fattura.
Chiusura affidata all'acustica The Yellow Brick Road, un ibrido riuscitissimo tra Wishing
Well (Angra) e alcune cose del Kiske solista d'annata con risultati da pelle d'oca. Un ritorno
pi che positivo per i nuovi Shaman e chi sosteneva che la band senza Matos sarebbe
morta...beh, si sbagliava di grosso!
MOMENTO D'ESTASI: la bellissima opener Inside Chains e l'accoppiata One Life "The
Yellow Brick Road.
COLPO DI SONNO: la sola Freedom leggermente inferiore al resto.

Shaaman! Yes, Shaaman and not Shaman as it used to be. Due to name problems in South
America, the band name is spelled Shaaman from now on. "It seems like after a spiritual
consultation with an Amazon shaman, Santo Darem, the band decided to get an extra A .
I am not a shaman, but I think this A stands for Alma ( Soul in Portuguese)" says
Felipe Machado and it sounds perfectly normal to us.
When Andre Matos, Luis Mariutti and Ricardo Confessori left Angra, they were facing one of
the biggest changes in their life so far. Having sold more than one million records with
Angra they dared taking a step into the unknown. And, somewhere on this journey away
from Angra, in to the realms of their musical minds, they have found their Shaaman.
Already in 2002 the band can celebrate their "Ritual", which marks the first release of the
freshly rising band. The album brought innovative melodies and the distinct voice of Andre
Matos, one of the most special Heavy Metal vocalists in the world. This combination sent
the album to be released in more than 15 countries, and took the band s name up into the
sky as one of the best Heavy Metal bands worldwide.
Three years later come the follow up as we might say. "Reason" sounds like a magical,
extremely passionate album, full of progressive power and atmospheric feelings set to be
released by AFM Records on May 17th, 2005. Recorded in Germany and produced by Sascha
Paeth (Edguy, Rhapsody), "Reason" is the natural evolution of "Ritual". Full of enthusiasm
and feelings Andre Matos voice leads us again through powerful and emotional songs of
high quality. While "Ritual" was privileging the undeniable virtuosity of the musicians,
"Reason" opens up space for the heart and soul of the band. The music of Andre Matos,
Ricardo Confessori, Luis Mariutti and Hugo Mariutti is now more organic, which helped
highlight the contrast between heavy guitar riffs and moody keyboard lines.
To prove this I would suggest you listened to "More". Probably one of the best songs
included on the new album and for sure one of the best cover songs I have ever heard. Hit
in the 80 s with the b>Sisters of Mercy, the song now sounds brand new, having distorted
chords and dark keyboard lines. The low tone of Andre Matos voice reveals that his vocal
spectrum is wider than we thought. The album will also please the traditional metalheads,
who will turn up the volume and bang their heads to the trashing sound of "Turn Away", the
heavier song of the album. While the title track, "Reason", brings back those good old twin
guitars from Iron Maiden or even Metallica. "In The Night" reveals a progressive side of
Shaaman which I have to admit I didn t like that much but if you re a fan of Journey then
you will probably love it. There also is the beautiful "Innocence", an orchestral song with
string arrangements that remind me of great ballads from the mighty Scorpions.
"Reason" is probably the deepest, most mature piece of music these Brazilian musicians
have done so far in their lives. And "Reason" is a good reason for the Metal world to
celebrate a striking, spiritual power and to keep it fresh. The Shaaman-spirit is alive!

Reason is the second release by Shaman and sadly also the last with Andre Matos as
vocalist. Along with Mariutti brothers, Andre left the band and starts his own new band,
Andre Matos. Reason is my favourite between the two Shamans albums that I have, its far
from easy listening at the beginning and need your patience to grow on you. Dont expect
to click with you at the first spin because its more inaccessible and somewhat darker than
its predecessor Ritual. Though this album has less Brazilian traditional music influence than
Ritual, but for me, this album stirs my emotions deeper than its predecessor and musically
it flows beautifully from one track to another.
Reason has no interlude or instrumentals composition to start the album but it has Turn
Away, the powerful and energetic track. I really like the part when bass guitar playing
dynamically after the first guitar solo to start the instrumentals section in the middle of the
track. The second track is a beautiful ballad, Reason. A nice and tender piano starts this
track and then gradually becomes faster. The spoken part by a female vocalist of this track
is depressing and beautiful. The guitar solo and piano touch of Reason is beautiful. More is
a cover track of the original one written by Sister Mary and musically it blends perfectly
with other tracks of the album. I never heard the original one but this cover track by
Shaman is beautiful with catchy keyboard work. Innocence is another beautiful ballad. I
like so much the Indian Dioruba playing and the guitar solo in this track, beautiful! Scarred
Forever is the next, it has great guitar and drums works at the beginning and highlighted by
a solid orchestration. In the Night is one of my favourite tracks in this album with beautiful
instrumentals section at the middle of the track and also beautiful guitar solo afterward. I
really like the pounding drumming at the second verse of this track and the beautiful
percussions by Ricardo near the end of the track. Rough Stone has a beautiful opening part.
It started by bass line and drums then highlighted by beautiful sitar and violin before
change into acoustic guitar and vocal part. The next track is Iron Soul, an energetic track
with beautiful orchestration in the beginning and a nice piano touch in the instrumental
section in the middle of the track. The piano touch is short, simple but beautiful and makes
a great impact for me. Its just beautiful and I like it so much. Trail of Tears is another
energetic track. Its a fast tempo song and has great guitar playing. Born to be is another
my favorite tracks and one of the most emotional tracks by Shaman. It opened by beautiful
yet depressing piano touch followed by heavy guitar riff, bass lines and drumming before it
calm down again to let the vocal in. It also has a beautiful Indian Dioruba playing during the
second vocal part after the first bridge. It ends with the same opening piano touch but a bit
longer and backed up by whispering vocal and haunting sounds. Dark yet beautiful!
Once again, a solid album composed by Shaman. The only complain from me is the vocal
parts by Andre Matos, he rare to use his high register note in this album unlike what he did
with his vocal in Angras albums or previous Shamans album. maXmuri - Yogyakarta

"Reason" is a outrageous CD, carrying with him a new proposal, that combines a
dark Heavy Metal with a great Hard Rock, all surrounded by a progressive 'aura' that
Shaman has always had.
Songs like "Reason", "In The Night", "Rough Stone" and "Trial Of Tears" YOU WON'T FIND
ANYWHERE... Shaman - and specially his singer and leader composer ANDRE MATOS - is well
known for his daring, his search for new elements, his INOVATION... things not really
appreciate nowadays... unfortunately, since Progressive Music LIVES FROM THAT!!!SHAMAN
has rediscovered Prog Metal twice: by making a NEW and very PERSONAL sound, and
making it with simplicity! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

"Intelligently crafted metal, with feeling, emotion and unrelenting power...what else could
a metal fan want?"
2005 saw Shaaman's (note the second "a" in the band name, added in 2005 following some
copyright issues) second full-length "Reason" hit the unsuspecting metal audiences. I say
unsuspecting, since few would have guessed just how much the band have evolved since
their debut "Ritual" in 2002. The atmospherics have been layed back a level and the folkish
elements from their past have pretty much disappeared in "Reason," giving way to a
powerful blend of traditional metal with a touch of progressive played with a stunning level
of proficiency.
While "Ritual" was a good effort, some of the songs could have used a little trimming and
overall, one had the feeling that the band hand't truly found themselves yet in terms of
songwriting, as testified by the somewhat overlong atmospheric sections on an otherwise
flawless album.
Fast forward to 2005 and Shaaman have experienced a subconscious rebirth of sorts. Be it
the extra "a" in the band name, or perhaps the tougher cigarettes, but this time around
Shaaman have opted for a more straightforward and simplistic approach and it works
amazingly well.
Opener "Turn Away" is the embodiment of the new Shaaman: powerful riffs, amazing
melodies, memorable choruses and singer Matos at his best since his early days in Angra.
Hugo Mariutti's fierce guitars and Ricardo Confessori's magnificent drum work are at the
forefront of the mix hinting at the band's ambition to re-energize their music, while the
keyboards, still present, have clearly taken the back seat. Title-track "Reason" explores the
band's new progressive approach with some intricate guitars and melodies, while
"Innocence" is one of the best ballads I've heard in a long time, with beautiful pianos and
Matos' amazing interpretation of the moving lyrics. The cover of the Sisters of Mercy tune
"More" is well executed, and songs like "Rough Stone" and "Iron Soul" truly captivate the
listener with their musical proficiency and feeling. Andre Matos has always had a brilliant
singing voice, but he has outdone himself on this album. Metal singers don't get much
better than this.
The lyrical themes plunge the listener into self-reflecting moods and the overall feeling
conveyed by the music is that of an emotional rollercoaster. Scratching the surface is an
underlying feeling of honesty in the music of "Reason" which should be applauded.
Every song has its place on the album and despite the straightforward music, with every
new listen, you manage to discover something new.
Undoubtedly, fans of Angra have been examining Shaaman with a magnifying class for a
quite a while (after all, Shaaman was formed by 3 former Angra members) and the band has
had to face the scrutiny of incessant comparisons with their Brazilian peers, rather
unjustifiably earning the reputation of being Angra's smaller brother. However, I dare say,
Shaaman has finally crushed those comparisons into darkest oblivion. Simply put, there's
not a hint towards Angra in Shaaman's music, and the band has truly created a sound that is
their own.
The occasional touch of Maiden appears once in a while, while bands like Dream Theater
and Queensryche have probably had their fair share of influence in Shaaman's music. But
combine those three bands and add a lot of...well, Shaaman, power, crunch and emotion
and the stage is set!
Intelligently crafted metal, with feeling, emotion and unrelenting power...what else could
a metal fan want? Be it traditional, progressive, speed or why not, even thrashier or
gloomier metal you like - go find this album. You'll be doing yourself a favor. Shaaman's
"Reason" is pure melodic metal at its best and one of the tragically ignored gems of 2005.
Highs: The immense power of the music and the captivating emotion throughout.
Lows: Some of the songs won't necessarily stand the test of time.
Bottom line: A brilliantly crafted metal album from start to finish.

I will always remember the split of Angra, damn it was one of my favourite band but well
when I think about it now, when I see the different releases of the two bands, I don't feel
so bad actually. "Ritual" was a good first release with a lot of Hits on it and I suppose that a
lot of would like to know if the new album of the Brazilian combo "Reason" will follow the
way of their first shout Don't worry that's the case but with some differences however

The first big difference is the name of the band, you're all reading well, that's Shaaman
now and not Shaman!!! That's just a little detail but in my opinion maybe that it's also
showing that the band is changing, that the band is taking a new road. I mean that "Ritual"
was the "same music" than Angra, do you know "Time Will Come" or "Distant Thunder" is it
not in the spirit of Angra? I think so, but with "Reason" that not the exactly the same, the
album is a bit more progressive and the songs are also a bit more complex. That's not so
direct as the first album and not so easy to enter in the album but it doesn't mean that it is
bad at the opposite.

Another time we have the luck to have some powerful songs like "Turn Away" and some
nice ballads like "Innocence" (the album follow the classical form, Heavy speedy songs and
break with ballads). The album is one more time really varied but not so easy of access as I
said before, and maybe that some of the songs will not be so efficient live. That's
something that I want to see because "Reason" is darker than "Ritual" and a bit sad actually
and that's not a surprise if we have an amazing cover of the hit of the Sisters Of Mercy
"More". This song actually can be considered as a good definition of this album, really dark
and deep but catchy and above all classy. One more time the talented Andre Matos and his
band mates prove that they are bests among the bests.

"Reason" doesn't suffer of any production problem, the sound (Sacha Paeth's work), like the
musical plays of the artist are perfect and no doubt that this album will finish in the Top 5
of the best Progressive/Power release of the year. The Brazilian act just confirms its great
potentiality and "Reason" confirms all the hopes that I had after the release of "Ritual".
That's a must no doubt

Shaman, Shaaman, Viper, Angra, Virgo and Avantasia. What do these names have in
common? Thats right, youve probably said the name out loud already, the man whose
brilliance have affected so many musicians and, more importantly, heaps of fans all around
the world.
Andr Matos is of course the man Im talking about, and hes back with the 2nd studio
offering from his new band, this time around aptly named Shaaman. Shaman is dead and
buried due to copyright-issues, and the fact is that its not just the named thats gone
through a small, but vital change since we last heard from them. Reason offers more
focus on heavy riffing and less focus on the Brazilian folk elements were grown
accustomed to through not only Shaman, but also the previous releases of Viper and Angra.
I for one had a hard time swallowing that musical turn, until I really started to get to know
the tracks. After 1 listen I was gravely disappointed, and was almost ready to proclaim the
death of the artist and the birth of the trend-whore, but thankfully things eventually
picked up. Ive always needed a lot of time to fully grasp the brilliance of Matoss
songwriting, his vocal melodies are complex, yet immensely catchy once you get to know
them properly. But Reason is without a doubt the one that needed the most
concentration and focus, cause even after 8-9 spins I wasnt fully convinced that he had
managed to get it right this time around.

So now, after whats approaching the likes of 30 rounds in the player, I finally got it right.
It sure as hell took its time, but it sure as hell was worth it. The immense beauty of the
title track, the creative input of More (a cover of Sisters of Mercy), the sore and tender
melody of Innocence and the new-found edgy roughness presented by Turn Away,
Iron Soul and Rough Stone, its all so scintillatingly and closely perfected that I
honestly am in a lack of superlatives to fully describe the genius that is Andr Matos.

So this is to you, the firm follower of Shaman (Shaaman), dont be afraid if you dont quite
get the right vibes the first day or two, just be sure to invest some time, concentration and
a bit of hard work, it will surely pay off when it all blossoms in its most pure and perfected
form.
The 17th of May isnt just the National day of Norway, its also the day when you run down
to your local record dealer (the 18th if youre in Norway of course, sadly the stores arent
open on such a glorious day), and you get yourself a copy of Reason. The title just says
it all, it does in fact give youreason.

Great, amazing, classic and perfect - to say the least, June 15, 2005

Reason is one of my favourite metal albums of all time. It seems simple and straightforward
at first, but it has so many subtle notes, everything falls where it should and after a few
listens you crave for more, more, more. I have forgotten all my other CDs for a good time.

While the new Angra has gone Euro, melodic metal, Shaaman is more and more a classic
metal band. But this is not 80's metal as well. Sure there are many 80's moments, such as
the ultra-heavy "Turn Away" and the Sisters of Mercy cover "More". But Shaaman is band of
virtuose musicians with lots of feeling (no, it's not an oxymoron). And they combine
influences from bands like Sabbath, Purple, Maiden and Priest, 50% of the complexity of a
Dream Theather on Pull Me Under and Metropolis, and some aspects of their Angra years to
create a unique and perfect metal style.

Andre Matos is cheesier and more aggressive at the same time. Luis Mariutti is bassing like
hell and Ricardo Confessori has the precise beat and variations for each song. And Hugo
again makes the difference. He proves that even few guitar notes can make beautiful lines,
heavy riffs and perfect solos. I say that Hugo is a combination of Toni Iommi, Adrian Smith
and Glen Tipton, with some hints of Malcolm Young.

Turn Away is fast, heavy and insane, but the rest of the disc adopt a different tune. Reason
and More start slow, growing into you while alternating aggressive and heavy parts, cheesy
vocal lines and subtle guitar insertions. Innocence is a great piano-led ballad, the band hit
on radios. Scarred Forever is a lighter straight metal with great guitar riffing and chorus. In
The Night and Rought Stone are beautifully complex songs whose heavy moments are at the
end. Iron Soul is similar to Ritual's Blind Spell, an evolving hard rocker. Trail Of Tears is the
more melodic song here, starting with galloping bass and drums and melodic riffs, it has
some of Ritual's Here I Am vibe. And finally Born To Be starts with a soft piano that hides its
aggresive chorus with Maiden's Clansman vibe of freedom.

As Andre Matos sing: "There is only one....REASON". Buy, get addicted and save money on
not buying other discs for some time.

If Andre Matos and the rest of Shaman's goal was to distance themselves from the Angra
sound for which they are best known, then they certainly accomplished it with Reason.
Shaman's excellent debut album, Ritual, was very much an Angra-style power metal album,
so I thought I knew what to expect from Reason. Instead, the band has taken its sound in a
totally new direction.

Reason is definitely not the power metal we're used to. It's still quite heavy at times, but it
tends more towards a melodic rock sound. And I'm not talking about Journey-inspired,
Frontiers Records melodic rock either. Yes, keyboards are prevalent, but this isn't a big
hooks and catchy chorus kind of album. Call it a "serious" hard rock album with an obvious
appreciation for melody. It reminds me at times of some of Threshold and Vanishing Point's
less metallic moments. The band's inclusion of South American musical elements is, as
always, a nice touch that helps set them apart from the crowd.

I have mixed emotions about this album. On the one hand, it's good to see the band
challenge themselves and defy expectations, and it's hard to argue with the results - this is
a very impressive album. On the other hand, knowing that the band is capable of recording
a top notch power metal album yet chooses not to do so is frustrating.

In American music, there's maybe 2 great songs per album. Even in European metal, not
every song is good on every album (there's some exceptions). Shaman's Reason has 10
songs. 10 of them are amazing.

I'm not what you would call a "fan" of Shaman (or Angra), but I listen to both and enjoy
both. So I'm not gonna go into massive amounts of detail.

What I will say is that I enjoyed the overall feeling of "melodic metal influenced by gothic
rock." To me, that's what this sounds like. So if you enjoy bands like Sentenced or
Katatonia, you'll enjoy this - even though the instruments don't follow the gothic style. The
music is more hard-rockish with lots of keyboard intros to enhance the emotions the
listener will feel.

There's several sad piano sounds, especially in the 3 "ballads" - Innocence, Rough Stone,
and Born to Be. These 3 and the 80's cover song "More" are some of my favorites. Its kind of
a funny album; sometimes, the ballads will act as your favorite songs, but at other times,
you're gonna crave to listen to the faster Trail of Tears (another of my favorites).

For anyone who's a Highlord, Dark Moor, or Rhapsody fan, you're not gonna hear tons of
orchestral arrangements or super fast songs on here. This album is more so where gothic
rock meets melodic metal.

Though most of the songs are around the same speed and the same emotions, you still
won't get bored. Think of Heavenly's Dust to Dust album, if you will. For some reason,
these 2 albums just do a better job of holding the listener's attention.

Even for fans of classic rock, alternative rock, etc. - this would be a GREAT starting point
for people wanting to listen to European metal. Soilwork, In Flames, Mnemic - the
screaming/growling/grunting can easily turn people off.

Bottom line - make an effort to listen to and enjoy this album. It's a lot different than most
of what's out there. Try downloading samples someplace if you're the picky kind. This is
one album that'll always have to come with me on my one-week vacations. (I have over 400
CDs - most of which are European metal. See my other reviews to get a sense of who I
listen to.)

the second album of the former Angra musicians Andr Matos (vocals), Luis Mariutti (bass)
and Ricardo Confessori (drums) doesn't sound like their old band at all. They have
developped their own music which is not too different, but before all Andr has improved a
lot! On former Angra albums, he sounded (in my opinion) too similar, he sometimes didn't
really know to speak (sing) English properly. The fourth band member is Hugo Mariutti
(guitars).

The opener "Turn Away" is very catchy, it really stands for the new Shaaman: powerful and
not too similar to other bands of the genre. A great uptempo-song, which is followed by the
titletrack "Reason", a slower song with a catchy melody. The next song is really hard to
judge; the band is doing a very heavy cover of the Sister Of Mercy song "More" ... some
might say it's blasphemy, some might like it I am indifferent. "Innocence" is a beautiful,
piano-dominated power-ballad, it somehow reminds me of Helloween's "A Tale That Wasn't
Right" from their first "Keeper Of The Seven Keys" album. On "Scarred Forever", I
sometimes would say it's Edguy's Tobi Sammett singing, if I didn't know it better. On "In The
Night", Shaaman used orchestral sounds to accompany the instruments which fits quite
well, although the cello in the middle sounds a bit uneasy. "Rough Stone" seems to be
another ballad and yet it is in some way, but heavy deep guitars destroy the dreamy feeling
every once in a while. Towards the end, the quiet atmosphere disappears and the song
develops into a pure and pretty heavy mid-tempo-song. "Iron Soul" is dominated in the
beginning by uneven/galloping drums and guitars that are taken into the stanzas and
through the first part of the song as well. Towards the end, that sound disappears only to
return at the very finale. "Trail Of Tears" is a kind of straight and powerful song, dominated
by that very catchy melody, played by the guitar and sung by Matos as well. The last (and
longest) song is "Born To Be". It starts just like a ballad but after a short acoustic
introduction the song is getting faster and the chorus is really exciting. But it ends just the
way it began quiet and ballad-like, with a piano outro.

After all, Shaaman finally left the Angra chains, having their own sound and playing their
own music on their second full-length album "Reason". You will recognize some typical
trademarks, but the sound isn't too similar to their former band. These guys have
definetely grown up now!

What is it?
What does Shaman have in common with Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, et al? In their
own way they are trying to create product that can be marketed, aimed at a target
demographic, hyped beyond all reason and touted as the next big thing.
I am sick and tired of the moaning I hear from people in the metal community concerning
the lack of substance in bands that are on MTV and that receive airplay, followed closely by
my aversion to the whining concerning the unfairness of the pop, rock and country markets
and how hard it is for "real musicians" to make it in the music biz.
This type of "go-nowhere" "music" strives for and achieves its goal ....the only difference
between this and the crap that the grist-mill of American pop spews out continually is that
you can avoid hearing this unless you live in Brazil...
Analysis:
What it is:
This is 80s inspired "metal-lite." Nothing to see here folks. Move along. Lack-luster
songwriting, necrophilia of the rotting carcasses of hair-metal bands so frivolous and banal
that I can't even remember more than a handful of their insipid names, and slavish
devotion to an ideal that is at best pass and at worst laughable ... that this type of drivel
should be taken seriously.
Summary:
Apparently, if the press releases accompanying the promo (once again, no artwork to
review come on you industry-types.if you want a thorough review of your product you
need to provide the libretto) are to be believed, when you visit Brazil set your watches
back 20 years...

Ex-Angra Andre Matos, Luis Mariutti and Ricardo Confessori formed with Hugo Mariutti a
new band called Shaman and with that band they now release their second CD called
Reason. The second album is supposed to be critical for a bands career, because this
album proves if you are able as a band to improve, grow and most of all, if you can
incorporate new creative musical elements.
I certainly feel that Shaaman has achieved this, as their new album is extremely
passionate, full of progressive power and atmospheric feelings and musical passages. The
album kicks off with the heaviest Shaaman song ever; Turn Away, even has some trashy
touches, although most of the song is rather melodic. The title track has a great melody
and it is dominated by a sensitive twin guitar solo, which takes you back to the good old
Iron Maiden time. The first and luckily only bad song is More, a cover (I hate covers!!) of
the notorious Sisters Of Mercy.
Innocence is a piano ballad, with great singing from Andre, a dreamy guitar solo and
some rather dramatic musical parts that really bring back memories from good old Angra.
However the highlight of this album is In The Night, a progressive rock song with amazing
guitar and orchestral parts and you should really check out the guitar solo there. In every
song on this CD, except for More, Shaaman proves that the band has grown and that it is
now a real band with lots of personality and musical talent to survive the musical jungle of
our time. The Shaaman musical spirit is truly alive and kickin !!

SHAAMAN, previously known as SHAMAN (due to legal reasons), is back with a new album.
Consisting of three ex-ANGRA members, they were/are somewhat considered to be ANGRA
II. In 2002 they released their debut album "Ritual" which turned out to be a big success,
also thanks to the very good production work of Sascha Paeth. Soon after the release, the
band went on tour and made a DVD and CD of it ("Ritualive"). This was pretty soon, since
most bands release a live album after three or more studio albums.

"Ritual" was released on the French label Nothing To Say (NTS), but some time ago this
label went bankrupt and SHAAMAN had to look for another home, which they found in
Germany: AFM Records.

For "Reason" Sascha was asked again to handle the production (and more, e.g. additional
guitars). Since Sascha and Miro are a close duo, the latter was again responsible for the
orchestral and keyboard arrangements, delivering splendid work (as usual). Next to them,
other musicians were asked to help make "Reason" heavy, melodic, and more.

The album starts with some screaming followed by heavy riffs and uptempo drums and from
this first minute you can hear a better production, a very clear one. "Turn Away" is an
uptempo song with nice symphonic elements giving the song more filling, creating one
whole. I also have the impression that Hugo improved his guitarplay. Apparently the live
performances did him much good.

An change in tempo is brought by "Reason" in which the piano plays an important role.
SHAAMAN also included a cover version of SISTER'S OF MERCY's "More", and the result is
amazing.

To avoid having heavy riffs all the way, there's also a ballad flowing out of te speakers:
"Innocence". At first, it's fully accoustic, but then the electric guitar and drums come into
play. Really a beautiful song and it can make you produce some tears. This is one of my
favourites. But don't cry too long, because "Scarred Forever" will/should lift you up again.
About the same 'trick' was done on "Ritual" with "Fairy Tales" and "Blind Spell".

"In The Night" begins with drumsamples and keyboards, creating a dark atmosphere.
Guitars soon set in, together with the drums (first only hi-hat and bassdrum). It's a
midtempo song, and though it's not bad, I found it rather average. I do like the symphonic
parts.

"Rough Stone" is an easy, relaxed song with some uptempo here and there. "Iron Soul" is
another favourite of mine. Drums and symphonic elements play a key role here. This
uptempo track will be a killer live.

"Trail Of Tears" continues the uptempo with very good and rough riffs. Quality song! "Born
To Be" closes the tracklist and is a mix of easy-going, midtempo, heavy parts but with a
beautiful chorus. Piano and operetic singing fill the last minutes.

Final words: "Ritual" was a strong album, live too, and you could hear some references to
ANGRA. In my opinion, the band members weren't that close yet when making the album.
Touring did them much good and also brought them more together, so they really became a
'band'. You can hear his very well on the new album. The songs are more solid, the
compositions have improved, though they already were very good on the debut album.
With "Reason" SHAAMAN have confirmed their talent and are really worth having in your
collection. In the Powermetal genre this is one of the best this year. SHAAMAN or ANGRA
fan? Get this album. This is one of those albums you can buy with your ears closed (= no
pre-listening required).

SHAAMAN sind stilistisch immer noch im Melodic Metal-Bereich anzusiedeln, agieren jedoch
inzwischen ausgesprochen straight und haben ihre ANGRA-Vergangenheit endgltig hinter
sich gelassen. So wartet der Opener "Turn Away" mit einem geradlinigen Rockbeat und Roy
Z-lastigen Riffs auf. Snger Andr Matos imitiert im Gegensatz zu frher nicht mehr Kate
Bush, sondern gibt sich bemht ungeschliffen. Wer seine glockenhelle Stimme kennt, wird
ahnen, dass sie dafr nur bedingt geeignet ist. Der anschlieende Titeltrack fllt einen Tick
melodischer aus. Aber auch hier kommen SHAAMAN ohne groe Umschweife zur Sache. Auf
kitschige Hooklines wird fast gnzlich verzichtet. Bezeichnenderweise handelt es sich bei
Song Nummer 3 um ein SISTERS OF MERCY-Cover. "More" wurde stilgerecht umgesetzt und
fgt sich nahtlos ins Gesamtbild ein. Die Ballade "Innocence" ist mit ihrem unverbindlichem
Klavierspiel danach der einzige Verweis auf frhere Werke. Bei "Scarred Forever" und
"Rough Stone" treten dagegen wieder tiefe Gitarrenriffs in den Vordergrund. Doch trotz der
klaren Songstrukturen bleiben die Stcke schwer greifbar. An vielen Stellen wirkt die Musik
eher wie Beiwerk zu was auch immer. Und whrend der Midtempo-Track "Iron Soul" noch
aufhorchen lsst, wirkt der einzige Uptempo-Song "Trail Of Tears" erschreckend
unambitioniert.

Das Info - geschrieben von keinem Geringeren als Matos ehemaligem VIPER-Bandkollegen
Felipe Machado - erzhlt etwas von Weiterentwicklung, was sicher zutrifft. Allerdings
schmerzt es mich, dass es ein Entwicklung weg von fesselndem Heavy Metal und hin zu
einfachen, harmlosen Liedideen ist. Dieser Eindruck wird durch die perfekte technische
Umsetzung nur noch verstrkt. Denn obwohl mit dynamischen Variationen nicht gegeizt
wird, fehlt den Kompositionen das zwingende Moment. So besitzen Songs wie "Turn Away"
oder "Reason" zwar durchaus einen gewissen Unterhaltungswert. Doch sie lsen zu keinem
Zeitpunkt Begeisterung aus. Es berwiegt vielmehr ein Gefhl der Ratlosigkeit und
Unentschlossenheit, das sich brigens auch beim Betrachten des Covers einstellt.

Es gibt Scheiben, die schon allein durch die Kurzbeschreibung der Label bzw. Promo-
Companies neugierig machen. So erging es mir bei Shaaman: "Die Scheibe wei mit einem
einzigartigen Mix von Metal, progressiven Elementen und Sd-amerikanischen Einflssen zu
berzeugen."
"Voila!" - dachte ich mir, klingt gut, also lass ich das Teil mal einfliegen und hab es wirklich
nicht bereut.
Nun ja, Namen wie Andr Matos (Vocals), Luis Mariutti (Bass) und Ricardo Confessori
(Drums) drften in der Szene keine Unbekannten sein - ich erinnere an Angra! Weiterhin
mit an Bord ist Hugo Mariutti an der Axt.
"Reason" ist nach dem Debt "Ritual" und der starken Live-Scheibe "Ritualive" mittlerweile
die dritte Verffentlichung der Brasilianer, die sich nach einem Rechtsstreit gezwungen
sahen, dem Bandnamen noch ein zweites "a" beizufgen. Offensichtlich war eine
einheimische Truppe schneller und hatte sich den Namen Shaman schon gesichert. Trstet
Euch Jungs - so'n zweites "a" sieht einfach nur schick aus *g*. Und im Logo wurde diese
Zwangsmanahme doch recht gut gelst.
Stimmbandvirtuose Matos (der brigens lt. Presse in Frankreich und Italien gefeiert wird,
wie ein Superstar - ops - sorry - in Germany wre das ein Schimpfwort, Andr) und seine
Mitstreiter verstehen es, Melodie und Hrte gekonnt miteinander zu verbinden, ohne dabei
jemals langweilig zu wirken. Die Songs sind zum Teil echte Ohrwrmer und reihen sich wie
auf einer Perlenkette homogen aneinander, auch wenn von der gefhlvollen Ballade ber
teils bombastische Songs bis hin zur Uptemponummer wirklich alles vertreten ist, was eine
gute Scheibe ausmacht.
Richtig heftig geht es also gleich mit dem Dampfhammer "Turn Away" zur Sache, bei dem
einem die Doublebsse sowas von gepflegt um die Ohren gedonnert werden, dass mein
Tinnitus kleine Freudenhpfer vollfhrt. Ein wrdiger Opener, der sofort neugierig macht!
"More" - warum dieser Sisters Of Mercy-Klassikers nun unbedingt gecovert werden musste,
bleibt wohl einzig und allein das Geheimnis von Shaaman. Zumal es doch schon genug mehr
oder weniger gelungene Versionen davon gibt, wobei ich nicht behaupten mchte, dass
hier nun schlechte Arbeit abgeliefert wurde.
Natrlich fehlen auch die obligatorischen Balladen nicht, die von Snger Matos regelrecht
zelebriert werden, wie zum Beispiel der Titeltrack, der auf seinem Hhepunkt mit
Streichereinlagen sowie einem feinen Gitarrensolo brilliert und somit eine fast
atmosphrische Stimmung zaubert.
Toll auch "Innocence", das sehr ruhig und entspannt beginnt, wiederum mit Streichern,
Klaviereinlagen sowie Flten versehen ist und sich im Laufe des Songs steigert, dabei
teilweise gar mit sgenden Gitarrenwnden aufwartet. Kleine Keyboardsprengsel sowie
wrzende Effekteinlagen - wie zum Beispiel die sanfte Frauenstimme im Endteil - geben
den letzten Kick. Da ist man doch geneigt, glattweg das Repeat-Knpfchen zu drcken.
Immer wieder fllt mir auf, dass die gesamte Scheibe mit sehr vielen liebevollen, aber
nicht zu kitschigen Details geschmckt ist, die sozusagen das Sahnehubchen auf meinem
Eisbecher sind.
Ob nun bei "In The Night" mit einem leicht brasilianisch-folkloristischem Touch versehen
oder auch das herrliche "Iron Soul", ein weiteres Highlight auf der Platte, dass jeden
Progmetaller garantiert mit der Zunge schnalzen lsst. Klassische Parts, verschleppter
Rhythmus, sanfter Gesang, um nach einem Doublebass-Break wieder in vollem Galopp nach
vorn zu preschen, feine Gitarrensoli - einfach nur geil!
Spa macht auch der Nackenbrecher "Trail Of Tears" - schn groovi nach vorn treibend, bei
dem Axe-Man Hugo Mariutti seine Fingerfertigkeiten beweisen kann.
Nun - mein Entschluss, mir die Scheibe einfliegen zu lassen war wohl nicht der
schlechteste.
Mir macht der Silberling unheimlich viel Spa, zumal er sehr abwechslungsreich ist.. Ich
denke, die bereits wartenden Fans werden nicht enttuscht. Produzent Sascha Paeth
(Edguy, Rhapsody) hat offensichtlich sein Bestes gegeben und dem Ganzen einen amtlichen
Sound verpasst.
Ich denke, shamanische 7 RockTimes-Uhren sind angemessen.

Angra fans were probably deeply hurt by the departure of Andre Matos from the band after
releasing the less-than-well-received Fireworks and surely thought the end of the band was
imminent. While a couple of members stayed behind and re-formed Angra with a new
singer and released Rebirth, Andre Matos took some of the former members and formed
Shaman, who have released Ritual, giving Matos fans something to sink their ears into if
they have missing the former voice of Angra. Most writings about Shaman definitely give
that the disc has much akin to Angra's Holy Land and rightly so. Given the vocalist, and
given the past history of Matos' writing, it's only natural that Ritual might sound a bit like
Holy Land, although I'd say that HL was just a bit more progressive in nature than Ritual.
But progressive metal fans will not be disappointed in this category at all.
As it is, you still get the wonderful vocal pyrotechnics that Matos is famous for, you get the
classy songwriting he contributed, and you get a cultural theme as well (here on Shaman
it's an Indian theme). You also get incredible performances by the band, the superb
production Matos is known for (bringing the great Sascha Paeth on board as well), and well
thought out songs to match. So basically, it's safe to say that if you are an Angra fan or a
Matos fan, there is no reason why this disc shouldn't satisfy you.
The music is varied, not as overly progressive as Holy Land, but it does have its moments of
progressive elements found throughout the disc, ranging from the speedy tunes to the
more "choppy" tunes, with speed variations thrown in everywhere. In addition, the Indian
influences such as the sound effects, flutes, opening intro, drums, etc., add a great cultural
feeling to the disc. Try to imagine what the Middle Eastern-influenced sound of the last
Avalon disc (Eurasia) did for that band, and you have a good idea of what the Indian sound
will do for Shaman. The guitar sound is chunky, and the drum sound is huge, giving this
sound a very dramatic flair. The Andre Matos flavored keyboards add the melodies and set
the tone for some of the songs, and his love for orchestrated sounds is well known and
present here as well. Each song tells its own story, and you almost "hear" the story being
told through the music rather than through the lyrics.
Andre Matos is in his finest form as usual, with an added extra aggressiveness for a bonus
for those who found his voice too laid back and light on his previous outings. Here he shows
that he can be as powerful and aggressive as he wants to be and on occasion he still shows
that incredible range he is known for.
The production is phenomenal, as is most Sascha Paeth recordings. The sound is very dry,
but still comes across in a huge way as each instrument has been given a thick wall of
sound, especially the drums that sound extra thick, pummeling, and clean. The vocals are
also incredibly produced, with Matos practically standing in your living room as he belts out
each song. The guitars are chunky, clean, and carry the thunderous sound along with them.
Of note are the soft intros using acoustic guitars, keyboards, choirs, and various Indian
instruments.
If you are missing Angra or Andre Matos in your life, Shaman will not disappoint inn either
case. While sounding like it could be the next Angra disc, Shaman can still stand on its own
with its cultural themes, fantastic songwriting and playing, and has the great Andre Matos
out front doing what he does best. Throw in the superb production, some spiritual lyrics,
and Shaman is just what the doctor ordered for something different and wonderful. Highly

Quite sometime ago I think it was 2002 I regularly hang out around CD stores
in Jakarta just to check what is coming out new to the stores and see if Im interested to
buy. In one occasion of my journey of no destination I met someone metalhead of course
at Aquarius Mahakam CD store. He worked for a boutique Hotel Grand Mahakam at walking
distance to the CD store he regularly visit the store almost everyday. As a matter of fact I
introduce myself knowing that he played an album (metal, in my opinion) that I never
heard before. By that time I was in search of good power metal album like Helloween,
Rhapsody, Nightwish, and the like. So I asked him what album he was playing at the store
and he showed me the cassette version of SHAMAN Ritual. It blew me away at first spin.
He talked a lot about the story of the band where basically the band was the culmination
of split-up ANGRA (Brazil band) and the vocalist Andre Matos (who is he? I never heard his
name before!) formed SHAMAN. I was interested with his story, really. He even talked quite
a lot about metal music horizon where I was not familiar before. (Yeah, I remember his
name now: Dedy! Hello, Dedy .. how are you? Hope that someday you read this write-up.)
He even talked about bands like Vision Divine, Blind Guardian, Angra, Edguy, etc. What a
new knowledge for me in the forest of metal world!
So, finally I purchased this CD. First impression, I do like the ambient opening of Ancient
Winds which basically is an introduction of the bands music in orchestral arrangement.
Its basically I feel like watching a movie. As an introduction, this opening track sounds too
long, actually, but I do enjoy it anyway. What follows is a blast of power metal music in
style through Here I Am where the vocal of Andre Matos is very powerful. He can easily
handle high register notes brilliantly. Structurally, this is actually not a straight power
metal music as it has many variations and styles. Yes, the foundation is power metal but
the band has expanded the structure as well as style, combining beautiful high and low
points.
The third track Distant Thunder is for me much more captivating in a sense that the
music is composed on metal music style but the structure has some curved lines that make
the song very dynamic, and so is proggy I think. The poser of this song, in addition to
dynamic style / structure, is the memorable basic melody delivered through the unique
voice of Matos. I also enjoy the heavy guitar riffs that truly represent the power metal sub-
genre. Excellent track!
For Tomorrow gives another flavor and texture of music through inventive opening using
traditional music (percussion and mandolin? not quite sure). The music then flows
naturally with clear and transparent voice of Andre Matos backed with powerful guitar riffs.
Another excellent track from the album. For those of you who claim as metalheads, Im
pretty damn sure that this song would make your nerves vibrate significantly.
Time Will Come rejects any opinion that metal music must start with heavy guitar riffs.
Its not the case with this song as soft piano touch kicks-off the song followed with full
music in metal vein augmented wonderfully with orchestration. Musical interlude of this
song gives a traditional taste followed with great guitar solo. Its a stunning composition.
Over Your Head also starts mellow followed with heavy rhythm music and then low
register notes of Andre Matos vocal line augmented with nice acoustic guitar fills.
Structurally, this song offers many styles with excellent melody. Again, Andre matos
delivers his high register notes singing line. There is a musical interlude with a kind of
traditional music (in my case, I associate this music with our traditional Reog Ponorogo).
Excellent. This is definitely a prog tune to the bone!
Fairy Tale is a ballad that has become my all time favorite since I heard it the first time.
Structurally the music was composed in circle i.e. the song ends the same as it starts.
What I mean here is that the melody of the song starts with low register notes of Andre
Matos under : Fairy lady, who stands on the walls and it finishes with the same opening
melody. The ballad flows brilliantly from elegant women choir to melodic piano touch and
Matos voice. So melodic, my friend! Not just the melody that is so powerful, I can also
enjoy the great orchestral arrangement that follows the music. Wow! What a great ballad I
have ever heard! Oh darling, hear my soul and heed my cry. Cause all my crying may flood
an ocean and in my heart .. The album title track Ritual sounds initially like any metal
music in medium tempo. There are some interesting segments in the song that sound
memorable to my ears. The use of keyboard and orchestra has made this song enjoyable.
The interlude part produces stunning guitar solo and orchestra. Its an excellent
song.Overall, this is a perfect album you would expect from a power metal band with many
prog touches during the stream of the music it produces. Yes, my rating is devoted to the
fact that this is a power metal band with powerful composition. No wonder this album is
perfect because Sascha Paeth is the producer. Highly recommended for those who are
hungry for power metal or progressive metal. Keep on proggin ...!

Shaman (now Shaaman), is the band born from the ashes of the former Angra
formation. When the band split-up Andr Matos, Ricardo Confessori and Luis Mariutti
formed Shaman with Hugo Mariutti on the guitars while Kiko Loureiro and Rafael
Bittencourt found new members and continued with Angra. This is one of the best metal
debuts i ever heard. The sound quality is awesome and so is the production that was made
by Sascha Paeth (Rhapsody, Avantasia). Die-hard prog rock fans may not find this album so
good like metal fans may find. I was expecting an Angra copy in this album but it really
surprised me when faced the originality and creativity of this unique work. This doesn't
sound like any power, heavy or prog metal you may know. Matos and it's friends uses in this
album less brazilian music influence and more world music influence. "Distant Thunder",
"Here I Am" and "For Tommorrow" can satisfy the needs of any power metal fan in the
world while "Time Will Come" and "Fairy Tale" take charge of the touching emotional part.
"Fairy Tale" was soundtrack of a very famous brazilian tv novel, fact that made this song be
known by the masses and making the band even best known than bands with years on the
road. This album showed us that the former members of Angra still have much more to give
us.
This is not a progressive masterpiece cause it have just a few progressive elements, but
this is an excelent addition to the collection of anyone who likes good music.

this is great opportunity for any metal fan to watch shaman in their best -making "ritual "
live on stage . "ritual is the first album of " shaman" and they already have a dvd - live
performance , so what do you think ? - i grew on their first album and it is very easy to like
it - so don't miss it!!!

As a rule, I tend to skip live albums. I'd much rather see the band in person (if possible) or
buy a live DVD, since so much of the energy of a live performance is visual. I'm even less
likely to buy a live album from a band that had (at the time) just one studio album to their
credit. Of course Shaman, which was formed by core members of Angra, wasn't exactly
your typical new band. In addition to their powerful debut album Ritual, Shaman also
represents the Angra legacy. The fact that the album included the RituaLive DVD as a bonus
disc made this a must have for me.

Disc 1 is the audio presentation of the 2003 Sao Paolo concert. The band was on their
home turf, so the crowd reaction was very impressive. Hearing that many people singing
along to what were at the time relatively new songs should have been a surprise, but I
know from personal experience playing Ritual over and over that these songs get in your
head just as quickly as anything from those early Angra albums. Speaking of Angra, I was a
bit surprised that there were no Angra songs on this disc. The band kept mostly to material
from Ritual, deviating only for two songs with their special guests Tobais Sammet (Edguy)
and Michael Weikath and Andi Deris (Heloween). Sammett joined the band for the
Avantasia song Sign of the Cross and the Helloween guys took part in the band's rendition of
the Helloween classic Eagle Fly Free. Producer extraordinaire Sascha Paeth also made a
guest appearance on guitar.

All told, the RituaLive CD showcased a very impressive and energetic live performance.
Both the band and the crowd were 100% into the show, which makes the disc that much
more enjoyable.

Disc 2 is the RituaLive DVD, and if you think the audio CD was impressive, the DVD will
blow you away. It features a much more expanded program. You're essentially getting the
whole show here, including some of the better known material from those early Angra
albums, which definitely got the crowd pumped up. It's a PAL DVD though, so unless you
have a region-free DVD player, you'll have to watch it on a computer.

Shaman fans and old school Angra fans simply must get this amazing live release. I know
there are audio-only or DVD-only versions available, but you're really better off seeking out
the CD/DVD combo package. If you're persistent, you should be able to find one for less
than the cost of the regular DVD release.

Shaman are a melodic metal band - though they publicly dismiss the tag in the bonus
feature documentary on this disc. They were created from the shards resulting from the
implosion of the Brazilian melodic metallers Angra. The two guitarists of Angra, who
evidently owned the name, got new guys in to continue the name of that fine band.
However the vocalist, bassist and drummer of Angra - Andra Matos, Luis Mariutti and
Ricardo Confessori respectively, formed Shaman with a couple of new fellows. And after
their first album they released this live DVD and an attendant live album. In some
territories I believe that this was released as as a DVD + CD package in a CD size package
but I'm not 100% on this, though if I'm right that would be the best product.

But back to the straight DVD. This contains a small booklet along with the disc which
doesn't amount to much but is more than you get with a lot of releases by bigger bands.
The special features are the video clip for the song Fairy Tale and also a clip made up of
footage from the gig itself for the song Tomorrow which was presumably done as a promo
for the live album. There are the usual features like sound options etc and the menu is
easy to navigate. There is the almost obligatory `making of' featurette and while it doesn't
shed any real light on proceedings it isn't as bad as some backslapping sessions we have to
put up with on some bands DVD's.

As to the concert itself it's pretty good. As a fairly melodic hard rock band Shaman are able
to fill up the sound spectrum fairly well, a lot of fast paced drumming and riffing as one
would expect from a band formed from one half of the old Angra band. The intention
seems to have been to mainly showcase their new material from the debut Ritual album.
And fair enough. In general it feels like average Angra tunes with a lot of the more eclectic
`world music' influences taken out. The few actual Angra songs are ones written by Andre
Matos and these are Lasting Child and the ripping Carry On.

There are a slew of guest stars on this DVD and they really do add some extra star material
and a certain fun factor. Tobias Sammet and Matos combine excellently on the tracks 14
and 15 while Sascha Paeth handles some six string duties for the same two tracks. A couple
of musicians I'm not familiar with, Marcus Viana and George Mouzayek chime in and
perhaps most interestingly for some listeners, Michael Weikath and Andre Deris appear on
the Helloween staple Eagle Fly Free. Weikath seems intent on showing zero emotion and
just standing about, cigarette in mouth, trying to be uber cool while Deris seems strangely
husky of voice, though it's not an unpleasant effect.
Stage production values aren't bad, this isn't a Metallica sized budget but the tone is set
and the crowd go absolutely mental for most of the gig just as we've come to expect from
the ultra passionate South American audiences. Picture quality throughout is fine, camera
angles are OK and the audio is also good, given the number of guest slots it's my guess that
there are fairly limited overdubs and if that's the case then all involved deserve a round of
applause.

What's the deal with this? - 52%

Ok, to start this review: Originally this review was written in spanish by me a few months
ago, so everything's ok (I just did some modifications here and there).

Now, straight to the point. We know the story of Shaman (Now Shaaman), so I'll skip that
part.

In my opinion, the best thing of this band, is singer Andr Matos and Luis Mariutti's bass
skills. The drums aren't great, Ricardo (the drummer) played better in Angra. Haha,
actually, all of them were better in Angra (specially in the proggy songs, like Speed or
Streets Of Tomorrow). And, about the guitarist, Hugo... He's pretty standard, and
unoriginal, I think.

This Cd is basically generic Power Metal, with nothing special. Well, there's something...
some songs have that "mystical" sound, and it's ok, but I found it annoying after a while.
Still, is not something I consider great, like some people I know who likes this band. The
tracks I can actually listen to, are the intro (composed by Miro) and Fairy Tale; the latter
being the album's ballad. It's not that interesting or great, but I think it'd be A LOT better if
it had actual verses, instead of Matos' screaming for 70% of the song...

Production is fairly nice, but sometimes some parts have sightly higher volume, but
whatever.

Well, I really DON'T recommend this CD. At all. I prefer their next release, Reason (for
which I expected a lot more progression, evolution... but meh, It's far better better than
this). Really, instead of this band, listen to Angra: Better singer, hell better guitarists,
better bassist, better drummer... better MUSIC. If you wanna check this, download it... If
you see it, don't buy it.

As the previous reviewer stated, this is the new band of three ex-Angra members. This
album, in my opinon is a lot better than anything Andre and the gang did while with Angra.
The music and lyrics are a lot better and overall more enjoyable.

The album starts off with a pretty cool atmospheric intro that prepares you for what's to
come, which is the second track. "Here I Am", hits you like a ton of bricks. The guitar,
combined with the drums in the intro is practically orgasmic. Then, the vocals start. I've
always loved Andre's vocals, he sounds REALLY great on this album. He hits just the right
notes, and makes the songs that much better.

The best thing about this album is that none of the songs sound particularly alike. Sure
they're all power metal songs, and the overall style is the same, but every song has a little
special thing about them. "For Tomorrow", for example has a great flute intro. "Time Will
Come", a great piano intro. "Over Your Head", awesome violin throughout the song.

However, in my opinion, the best song on this album is not one of the faster ones. It is the
beautiful, melodic and slow "Fairy Tale". The slow piano at the beginning is great and
Andre's calm vocals are really awesome. This song really shows of Andre's vocals. If anyone
else sang this song, it would be total shit. His vocals make the song what it is... GREAT.

I'm going to stop writing here and tell you one thing.

The other half of Angra's original line-up is in this band together with bassist Luis's brother
Hugo. When I first heard of him I was immediately very skeptical about Hugo as much as the
new Angra members. Hugo's playing focuses more on being "emotional" rather than
technical but I find he can walk on both sides of the street with equal aplomb.

The two years or so since Angra split suggests Shaman's members' skills have rusted; the
magic gone. However such is not the case. Matos's voice still enchants but now with a
raspier tinge. He is still the versatile vocalist as before, able to hit low notes and high notes
with little respite in between. Listen to Fairy Tale to see what I mean. Ricardo's drumming
is just as powerful, though now more "primal" than previous Angra albums. Bassist Luis
Mariutti still pounds his listeners with his intense bass lines that gives a good groovy edge
to the music. Overall I found the rythm refreshingly new to me and I loved it immediately.

As expected, the production by Sascha Paeth and Miro are extremely well done. I for one
do not think medling classical and world music into metal/rock is a walk in the park but
these guys did it perfectly.

Shaman mines a new vein in metal, "mystic" metal they call it. I don't know the name for it
but it is magic. The atmosphere they create cannot be described; you have to hear it for
yourself. This album is throughly unique and melodic. I swear, the first time I heard "Here I
Am" my mouth was practically dropping to the floor. Never had I heard such beautiful piano
playing and I doubt I will again. The choruses are the catchy climaxes of each song. As they
say valleys are there to make the mountains seem higher, but in this album even the
"valleys" were enchanting, making that analogy seem redundant.

Ritual is often compared to Rebirth but I cannot say which album is better. I love both and I
think each have their own good points. One thing I have to mention about Ritual though, it
is not as accessible as Rebirth and you have to let it slowly grow on you. If you want a new
experience then try Ritual. If you would rather stick to something you are familiar with
that has been perfected, then get Rebirth. If you don't want to go wrong, get BOTH. Trust
me, you won't regret it.

DVD Review - Shaman - RituAlive

Fans of the Brazillian band Angra will probably be familiar with Shaman, the band formed
by Andre Matos (Vocals/Keyboard), Luis Mariutti (Bass) and Ricardo Conferssori (Drums)
after leaving Angra. Hugo Mariutti (Guitars) completes the circle. Shaman released their
fantastic debut album, Ritual in 2002 and I think it is even better than Angra's latest, also
very strong release. So of course I ordered this DVD as soon as I found it and with the fine
service of Laser's Edge it arrived only four days later.

The main part of the DVD captures Shaman's concert in Creditcard Hall, Sao Paolo on April
5th 2003 and that alone is worth the purchase. In short, it is a really excellent live show.
Several cameras cover the stage and audience very well. Sometimes the editing is a little
weird, but overall this is a splendid concert to look at. The sound is also exceptional. Very
clear and powerful. Both the musicians and the energized audience have been captured in
just the right way.

Performance-wise the band is in great shape and look very happy and interact with the
audience in pretty much every song. The audience goes completely crazy through the
whole show and sing, jump and dance along to everything. At the beginning of each new
song there is a huge wave of joy coming from the audience when they recognise the songs.

I have always been amazed at Andre Matos' voice. It takes a song or two before he is
warmed up and starts hitting the higher notes, but Wow! What I really like about it is that
when he sings in the lower registers his voice has a nice raw and powerful sound to it.

Another thing I really enjoyed watching was guitarist Hugo Mariutti. I must say I'm
impressed. Being the sole guitarist he does a fantastic job and plays with great skill. I found
his solos to be very captivating. Just check out Distant thunder to see what I mean. While
the cameras don't linger so frequently on Luis and Ricardo, they are keeping the music
strong and tight throughout the show. Standing in for Andr on keyboards most of the time
is Fabio Ribeiro.

The band plays every song from their debut as well as several cool surprises. Those include
Tobias Sammet (Edguy) and Sascha Paeth suddenly joining the band on stage for an
energized version of Sign of the cross from the Avantasia project as well as Pride. The
audience goes completely nuts during this part and continues well into Eagle fly free where
Michael Weikath and Andi Deris from Helloween join the band. Where Tobias and Andr's
vocals harmonised very good, Andi has a much deeper and rawer voice which makes the
harmonising sound a little weird sometimes. But hey, I'm not complaining.

Another highlight is Over your head, which has a really cool middle section with the band
being joined by a violin player, among others.

Besides the concert you also get videos for Fairyland and For tomorrow as well as a 17
minute "Making of Ritual tour". A photo gallery is also included and I like the way it is put
together. No need to constantly press the remote control back and forth. Just sit back and
relax to the music and the slideshow that automatically takes you through the pictures. If
you want to examine something closer, just press Pause...

A really great concert and a few cool but overall slightly disappointing extras make for a
very good release the fans can't miss. For people who want to discover Shaman I would
recommend them to wait until the re-release of Ritual hits the streets on March 22nd. It
will have this DVD as an extra bonus gift.

"Ritualive" is the first live album of the "new" band of Angra's former members Andre
Matos, Luis Mariutti and Ricardo Confessori with in addition Luis' brother, Hugo Mariutti as
a guitar player. After their first album "Ritual", the band come with this Live album
recorded in So Paulo on April 5th, 2003.

The first thing I can say is that this album has in fact the same track list as the studio album
"Ritual". Excepted the great cover from Helloween [with Andi Deris and Michael Weikath as
guests] "Eagle Fly Free" and the song "Sign Of The Cross" from Avantasia [with Tobias
Sammet] this live album is the same as their first one.
Then maybe we can wonder why the band has done that and if it's really a good thing to do
a live album after only one studio album Well, personally I really don't know what I can
say about that, and I will not try to answer that question, to that [marketing?] concept
Why? Well maybe just because the only answer could come from "Ritualive". "Ritual" was a
really good album, but we see here that Shaman is also a great live band. Not hard when
you are guys who formed and played a lot of time with Angra before, but this live album is
so excellent that maybe it's not a bad thing to have it today.

A great and powerful sound, an excellent crowd, which sings with the band on all the
songs, a ton of guest musicians with the guys of Shaman [who were just perfect and
excellent this night] and a lot of great songs [you already know that if you know Shaman's
first album] are the ingredients of that new album. And believe me, this live album is just
really good, to such an extent that we can wonder if this album is not better than the
studio's one. Because yes Shaman and then "Ritual" are made to play on stage, and well I'm
not against that when I listen this album

Excepted the fact that we only have "one" album on this live, I can also regret the fact that
the Angra's song "Carry On" is only a Multimedia bonus track. Ok it's a real good thing to see
the song in video but why not as a real song on the CD too Just too bad

At the end, I will really advise this album, to all fans of Metal, to fans of Shaman of course
and even to fans of Angra. This is a real great production, very true, really moving and
even if it's strange to do such a live after one unique studio album, I think that we can buy
this album, because it's a good one, and because the true metal fan that you are can't be
disappointed by it. No doubt that after their first great album, the guys of Shaman show us
that they are also a great band on stage. If you have any doubt about this band, you'll see
with that release that you are totally wrong. For sure they are great, and I'm already
waiting for the new album, which will be released this year.

Quebrei a cara aps ouvir esse debut do Shaman. Aps a sada de Andr Matos, Ricardo
Confessori e Luis Mariutti do Angra, minhas expectativas de que o Shaman seria uma banda
do mesmo nvel
eram mnimas. Mas ainda bem que eu quebrei a cara.

O Shaman to bom (ou at melhor algumas vezes) que o Angra. Por exemplo, aquilo que
era uma caracterstica prpria do Angra, de unir ao seu som elementos vindos da
musicalidade folclrica brasileira, o Shaman fez em Ritual em quase todas as msicas. O
Shaman
no utilizou somente elementos da msica brasileira, mas tambm da msica sulamericana
e at rabe, isso sem dizer da msica clssica.

Os vocais de Andr Matos - que muitos odeiam pelos seus falsetes - em vrios momentos de
Ritual esto mais rasgados. Alm disso ele continua sendo um dos melhores intrpretes do
heavy metal, mesmo que no seja do seu agrado o timbre de sua voz, no d pra ficar sem
cantar junto com ele. Por causa disso Ritual conta com refros memorveis, que
provavelmente sero catados por todos nos shows da banda.

Hugo Mariutti, o nico guitarrista, fez um timo trabalho, onde pode ser notado uma boa
influncia de heavy metal tradicional em seus riffs. Mas mesmo assim um outro guitarrista
seria muito bem vindo.

Aps uma intro de mais de 3 minutos cheia de referncias indgenas - de nome Ancient
Winds - o Shaman apresenta Here I Am. Tpica msica para abrir um lbum: riffs explosivos
e andamento rpido. Seu clmax quando Andr senta ao piano, do qual desfere uma
melodia bem forte, ao fundo ouve-se uivos proferidos por uma mulher (pensar em Cradle of
Filth no seria to incomum).

Fairy Tale parece Lasting Child (Angra). Distant Thunder tem uma abertura meio Iron
Maiden (com um fraseado a la Run to the Hills), um solo bem rpido e outro grande
momento de Matos ao piano. Time Will Come conta com riffs sem muito peso mais cheios
de detalhes. O trampo de Confessori merece destaque nessa.

Para fechar Ritual o Shaman convidou Tobias Sammet, que fez um dueto com Andr ao
ritmo frentico de uma msica tpica do power metal meldico - Pride. Msica essa que
deveria ser ouvida por muitas bandas do estilo - para que aprendam com se faz.

Logo aps a sada de Andr Matos, Lus Mariutti e Ricardo Confessori do Angra, veio a
pergunta inevitvel: qual ser o futuro do Angra? A resposta ns j sabemos. Mesmo um
admirador extremista deve admitir: o som da banda mudou. E muito. As guitarras do Angra
continuam afiadas como sempre, disso no h dvida. Mas e no que diz respeito s
composies da banda como um todo? Ouvindo o disco de estria do Shaman fcil achar
uma resposta. O Shaman o Angra sem guitarristas extremamente tcnicos e clssicos e
com sonoridades brasileiras. Hugo Mariutti um excelente guitarrista. Ele no tem o
mesmo estilo musical que marca Kiko Loureiro e Rafael Bitencourt. Entretanto, cumpre
com maestria sua funo. Enquanto o Angra se afunda perdendo a linha do estilo que o
consagrou, o Shaman se revela como o curso natural do antigo Angra. o Angra bem mais
cru, sem perfeies tcnicas no que diz respeito ao rebuscamento das guitarras. uma
continuao bem mais bruta de Fireworks.
Agora, indo ao que interessa, vamos descrio das msicas. Ancient Winds um
introduo interessante. Lembra os discos do Helloween com aquelas aberturas em vrios
de seus discos. Bem bolado, como diria Slvio Santos. O disco comea bem. Here I Am
daquelas que se sobressaem. Comea bem pesada, vai elevando a temperatura e quando
chega no final, se est completamente cativado pela msica. Nota dez pra essa! Distant
Thunder tem um refro marcante como poucos, realmente lindo. O primeiro solo apesar
de curto timo, daqueles que fica na cabea por semanas. No chega a ser a melhor do
disco, mas uma composio que faz jus a estar no disco. For Tomorrow tem uma
introduo bem diferente do que se costuma ouvir numa banda de metal. Mas a
criatividade provou que a ousadia em criar s vezes vale a pena. E dessa vez valeu muito a
pena. E como valeu. Time Will Come provavelmente a melhor do disco. Tem um riff
marcante assim como os vocais de Andr Matos. A bateria aqui se destaca novamente. O
solo de guitarra simples, porm eficiente. Over Your Head outra boa msica,
daquelas de se ficar impregnada na cabea. Os teclados so muito bem trabalhados e so
parte essencial da msica. Parece haver uma certa influncia de sons orientais na msica, o
que tornou o som bem interessante. Tem uns momentos de peso alternados com momentos
de calmaria bem sombrios, alm do solo maravilhoso que fazem a msica beirar a
perfeio. Nessa com certeza Hugo Mariutti teve inspirao bem acima da mdia do disco.
Fairy Tale uma espcie de balada bem marcante, mas que corre o risco de se tornar
enjoativa caso seja ouvida em excesso. Mas boa assim mesmo. Blind Spell comea bem
calma, fica agressiva aos poucos, cativando o ouvinte. A bateria perto da metade da msica
d aquele toque que s Ricardo Confessori capaz de dar. Mais um ponto para a banda.
Ritual uma boa msica, mas faz mais o papel de completar o disco do que de divertir
como as demais. Pride uma boa despedida do disco. Chega a estar entre as melhores,
pesada e tem uma pegada forte, verdadeiramente boa. Lus Mariutti finalmente d as caras.
Aqui seu baixo bem mais audvel e d um toque especial msica. O solo de guitarra faz
a msica parecer mais interessante do que j . Ao vivo, realmente anima quem gosta de
se divertir num show de metal.
Um ponto a ser citado aqui so as guitarras. No que Hugo Mariutti no seja competente no
seu posto, mas outra guitarra na banda no faria mal. Em muitos momentos pode-se
perceber que ele sobrecarregado de trabalho. Seus riffs so verdadeiramente
impregnantes. Here I Am e Time Will Come provam isso. Ele tem qualidade e talvez
precise compartilhar seu estilo com mais algum. Pense na possibilidade de criao desse
guitarrista com mais uma guitarra ao seu lado. Afinal, duas cabeas pensam melhor do que
uma. O peso da criao de solos e riffs no ficariam a cargo de apenas um guitarrista. Quem
sabe assim a msica no fluiria com mais facilidade e empolgao? Quero aqui mostrar que
esse excelente msico precisa de algum o ajude a desenvolver suas idias. Como exemplo
pense na dupla de guitarristas da formao clssica do Maiden. Ambos os guitarristas so
muito bons. Mas Dave Murray e Adrian Smith no soam melhor ainda? Essa minha idia.
Em resumo, esse disco foi uma prova para o pblico de que esses msicos continuam
trabalhando duro para manter o nvel de qualidade que davam banda anterior. Um disco
excelente. De se ouvir de cabo a rabo. Parabns pela tima estria ao Shaman. Ainda pode
se esperar muito dessa banda.

Shaman - Ritual (9/10) - Brasilien - 2002

Seitdem das Trio Matos, Mariutti, Confessori ANGRA verlassen hatten und die Neuigkeiten
die Runde machten, dass sie unter dem Namen SHAMAN weitermachen wrden, gemeinsam
mit Luis' Bruder Hugo Mariutti, wartete ich gespannt auf den Tag da ich endlich "Ritual" in
meinen Hnden halten durfte.
Nachdem VIRGO ja in eine komplett andere Richtung gegangen war, ist SHAMAN eine Band,
die ein absoluter Konkurrent von ANGRA auf den brasilianischen Power Metal-Thron ist,
und das ohne zu sehr nach ihnen zu klingen, sondern in ihren Kompositionen absolut
eigenstndig zu bleiben.
Das beginnt schon mit dem groartigen Intro "Ancient Winds", das in jedem groen,
monumentalen Film wie "Braveheart" passen wrde, ein Start nach Ma, dem mit "Here I
Am" ein schneller, Double-Bass-getriebener Power Metal-Hammer folgt, der sich an keiner
vielen anderen Power Metal-Acts orientiert, sondern in seiner eigenen Liga spielt, in der
nur noch vielleicht ANGRA spielen, die auch in gewisser Weise der einzige Bezugspunkt
sind, aber hey, von SHAMAN waren vorher in ANGRA, wenn es also Parallelen gibt, wie
knnte es keine geben?
Dass Andr Matos ein Ausnahmesnger mit einer wirklich eigenstndigen Stimme ist, ist
within bekannt, dass er einer der nettesten Musiker berhaupt ist, hoffentlich auch. Und
seine Stimme ist eine der Sulen der Strke und Originalitt, ebenso wie die Art des
Songwritings der Brasilianer, mit einem Riffing, das ganz einfach anders ist als der
Standard, sehr intensive und vielschichtige Arrangements und der Gebrauch von
brasilianischen Folkmelodien, -Rhythmen und sogar -Instrumenten, groartig!
Wie am Anfang von "For Tomorrow", mit einer indianischen Dioruba, die auch in anderen
Songs verwendet wird. Und egal ob es jetzt ein schneller Power Metal-Track ist oder eine
balladeskere Passage mit einem solchen folkigen Einfluss, SHAMAN stehen auf "Ritual" fr
hchste Qualitt und Eigenstndigkeit. Wie das beinahe dem Progressive Power Metal
zuzuordnende "Over Your Head" mit einem Gast-Keyboardsolo von Derek Sherinian (Ex-
DREAM THEATER, PLANET X), das aber dennoch ein geradliniger Kracher ist, oder der
klassische Frauenchor, der das Intro von "Fairy Tale" formiert, "Blind Spell" mit seinen
beinahe Tribal-artigen Rhythmen oder das furiose "Pride" mit einem groartigen Duett
zwischen Andr und EDGUY/AVANTASIA-Fronter Tobi Sammet, allesamt groartige Songs
mit eigener Identitt und Seele.
SHAMAN haben es also geschafft ein Album zu erschaffen, das gleichzeitig originell und
qualitativ herausragend ist, etwas, das heutzutage nicht mehr allzu hufig angetroffen
werden kann. Und selbst wenn ihr dem Power Metal schon mde seid, gebt SHAMAN ihre
mehr als verdient Chance und ihr sollt es nicht bereuen werden! (Online 13. Januar 2003)

Ritual
Album 2002

Bien sabemos lo que ocurri hace ya un par de aos. Un hecho que golpe muy fuerte en
los corazones de muchos metaleros, y que -sabamos- acarreara consecuencias. Buenas o
malas, pero consecuencias al fin. Los conos del metal sudamericanos, innovadores y llenos
de creatividad, los brasileos (a esas alturas, ya patrimonio de la humanidad) de Angra, se
separaban. Por un lado Kiko Loureiro y Rafael Bittencourt, guitarristas, continuaran con "la
banda" (con el mismo nombre, lo cual fue bastante criticado) y por el otro Luis Mariutti
(bajo), Ricardo Confessori (batera) y el multifactico Andr Matos (voz y teclados), quienes
anunciaban que continuaran haciendo msica juntos. As, algunos esperbamos que al
cerrarse una puerta, se abriera una ventana, y que en vez de una gran banda, tuviramos
dos. Sin dudas, una visin optimista que en ningn modo era constitutiva de consenso.
Pas algn tiempo, y poco antes de que Kiko y Rafael anunciaran que los reemplazantes de
Andr, Luis y Ricardo seran Ed Falaschi, Felipe Andreoli y Aquiles Priester, se anunciaba
el nacimiento de una nueva banda, compuesta por los tres primeros, ms Hugo Mariutti
(hermano de Luis), como nico guitarrista: naca Shaman, una banda como pocas, que
antes de ejecutar un acorde ya posea una cantidad de fans impresionante, dispuesta a
seguirla -y en especial a la trascendente figura de Andr Matos- con un fervor casi religioso.
As, con slo un tema algo conocido a travs de internet, "Time Will Come", Shaman visit
nuestro pas el jueves 17 de Mayo del 2001, haciendo un muy buen show en el Estadio
Chile, en el que interpretaron 4 temas nuevos (el ya mencionado "Time Will Come", "Be
Free", "Blind Spell" y "For Tomorrow"), ms una considerable cantidad de "covers" de
Angra, adems de un tema de Viper y una sui generis versin del clsico "For Whom The
Bell Tolls" de Metallica, con Andr Matos en las baquetas y Hugo Mariutti en las voces.
Por todo lo anterior, el disco debut de esta banda ha sido sumamente esperado por el
pblico heavy-power metalero, especialmente luego de la salida del exitoso "Rebirth", del
nuevo Angra. Y una espera que se hizo ms o menos larga ha llegado a su fin, con la salida a
la luz de "Ritual", un disco sumamente complejo, con temas en su mayora bastante largos -
ms de seis minutos-, que explota de forma pronunciada pero a la vez prudente el tpico
de las ceremonias rituales y el chamanismo (vale recordar que un chamn es una especie
de hechicero de sociedades tribales o "menos evolucionadas", segn un dudoso criterio de
"modernidad"), lo que no slo se ve a lo largo de las letras, sino tambin en la notable
diversidad de variantes musicales que encontramos a lo largo de este trabajo, donde
podemos encontrar, aparte de la guitarra, el bajo, la voz y la batera, zampoas,
percusiones africanas, violn, charango y tambores celtas, entre otros. Y adems, para
terminar de esbozar la complejidad de este material, debemos sealar que, dentro de los
msicos invitados, se encuentran nada menos que Derek Sherinian (tecladista, ex-Dream
Theater, miembro de la banda que acompa a Yngwie J. Malmsteen en su ltima gira),
Sascha Paeth (con quien Andr Matos realiz su proyecto Virgo), y Tobias Sammet en las
voces, en el tema que cierra el disco, "Pride".
"Ritual" abre con Ancient Winds, un intro un tanto largo (ms de 3 minutos), que
inmediatamente nos indica el camino que el disco seguir: percusiones y sonidos que crean
una atmsfera muy "tribal", que nos dan la impresin de situarnos de buenas a primeras en
medio de la selva amaznica, unidos a una meloda muy "Age Of Empires". En definitiva, a
pesar de lo extenso, el intro, ms all de su obvia funcin de introducirnos al mundo de
Shaman, crea atmsfera para lo que vendr ... un riff totalmente poderoso, power
metalero hasta la mdula, que marca el inicio de quizs el mejor tema del disco. En efecto,
Here I Am nos muestra una fantstica combinacin entre momentos bastante rpidos y
poderosos con quiebres lentos y casi atmosfricos, con sutiles toques de piano, voces
femeninas cuales cantos de sirenas griegas y dobles bombos muy bien ejecutados por parte
de Confessori. Y qu decir de la voz de Matos ...en resumen, uno de los mejores temas del
ao 2002, cargado de emotividad (por momentos, especialmente en el coro, muy en el
estilo de lo que conocemos en "Carolina IV"), y con un sonido que sin dudas recuerda los
mejores tiempos de Angra, aunque con un contenido y un sonido distinto. Un sello especial.
Despus de la fantstica exhibicin de talento del tema anterior, Shaman contina la
descarga con Distant Thunder, un tema con un comienzo muy rockero y por momentos
bastante heavy (la meloda del comienzo es una declaracin de principios), con un ritmo
mid tempo lleno de "vida" y un coro sumamente bien construido. Ciertos momentos
progresivos (nuevamente el piano se hace presente) dan paso a un solo bastante Power,
muy meldico, sin ninguna pirotecnia, dentro de un ritmo bastante acelerado. Excelente
trabajo.
El siguiente tema, For Tomorrow, es absolutamente fuera de lo que estamos
acostumbrados a escuchar ... una introduccin absolutamente andina, a base de
instrumentos de viento -como zampoas o quenas, muy en la onda de los primeros tiempos
de Inti Illimani-, junto con charangos, sin dudas rompe muchsimos esquemas ...
posteriormente, la clida voz de Matos junto a una guitarra acstica conducen a un riff
bastante interesante, un pre-coro fantstico (notables las armonas, que recuerdan a
algunos trabajos de Queen) y un coro muy bien logrado (muy bien Matos). Por momentos las
quenas se hacen nuevamente presentes, mezcladas con percusiones, guitarras elctricas, y
un notable trabajo de Confessori, muy tcnico y preciso. El genial cambio de ritmo -y de
atmsfera- de mediados del tema, junto con un muy correcto solo (la principal
caracterstica de Hugo Mariutti en las guitarras es su correccin, la carencia de artificios o
de intenciones de "querer demostrar cun buen guitarrista es"), terminan por configurar un
complejsimo tema, eso s, bastante difcil de digerir por quienes slo se llenan con ritmos
infernales o princesas medievales.
Ya en pleno disco, Over Your Head pone el toque progresivo, muy en la onda del "Six
Degrees Of Inner Turbulence" de Dream Theater, por momentos, pero con la calidez que ya
es tnica en este trabajo. Un excelente coro, progresivo pero con mucho Power, nos da
paso a una atmsfera bastante tribal (que recuerda a ciertos momentos de "Holy Land"), y
posteriormente a un solo excelentemente bien ejecutado (gran protagonismo del teclado),
mezclado por momentos con sutiles toques de piano.
Time Will Come, el nico tema "conocido" de Shaman al visitar nuestro pas el ao pasado,
comienza con una sutil introduccin de piano, posee un ritmo bastante Angra, con matices
marcados por sonidos de campanas y un muy buen trabajo, con muchas variantes, de
Confessori en la batera (quien se lleva prcticamente todo el peso del tema). No es el
mejor tema del disco, pero tampoco desentona.
El siguiente corte, Fairy Tale, juega con un estilo que ya conocemos en temas de Angra
como "Stand Away", o la genial adaptacin de "Moonlight" de L. V. Beethoven que hace
Viper en su "Theatre Of Fate", aunque con la calidez propia de este trabajo. Nuevamente
las sirenas de tragedia griega nos invitan a entrar a su mundo, adornado con pianos y con
una muy suave voz de Matos en el comienzo, quien muestra a cabalidad el gran manejo que
posee en cuanto a los tonos altos, para culminar con un muy buen trabajo de Hugo Mariutti
en la guitarra, y un Matos muy sutil.
Blind Spell, el siguiente tema, sigue un camino muy soft-rockero (muy buenos toques
ochenteros), con detalles muy bien trabajados y perfectamente compenetrados con el
"espritu" del tema. Un excelente y emotivo coro (nuevamente sobresale el gran trabajo
que hace Hugo Mariutti con una guitarra "en segundo plano", tras la voz), adems de la
infaltable inclusin de toques percutivos tribales (volvemos a recordar a Carolina IV), junto
con un muy buen solo de teclado y un final perfecto, hacen de este tema, que si bien no
posee todo el Power que uno pudiera esperar, uno de los mejores del disco.
El estilo ms bien "rockero" contina bien trabajado con Ritual, tema que, con un ritmo
muy sencillo, muestra a cabalidad la versatilidad de los integrantes de la banda,
especialmente de Matos en la voz. Un excelente cambio de ritmo en el medio del tema,
que le da un quiebre un tanto progresivo, y, sobre todo, la marcada identidad del sonido de
Shaman, que est a aos luz de convertirse en una copia del Angra que hizo famosas a las
tres cuartas partes de la banda, lo convierten en un muy buen tema.
El final del disco viene a ser una especie de rplica a quienes puedan decir que Shaman
nada tiene de Power Metal ... en efecto, con Pride, una descarga de miles de voltios de
electricidad, Shaman demuestra que tambin es una banda capaz de hacer temas sencillos,
directos a la vena, muy meldicos (muy Edguy, pero con el sonido caracterstico de
Shaman) y, sobre todo, con Power. Comentario aparte recibe la participacin del alemn
Tobias Sammet, quien hace do con Matos en las voces ... un notable final, cargado de
energa.
En resumidas cuentas, Ritual es un disco sumamente especial, al que hay que saber
desentraar su sentido y alcance, lo que difcilmente se logra escuchndolo slo una o dos
veces. Si bien es cierto la expresin "especial" es, hoy por hoy, demasiado utilizada, es la
denominacin ms adecuada que se le puede hacer a este muy buen trabajo. Qu difcil es
ser original hoy en da, ms aun con la tremenda "mochila" que la precedente etapa que
estos msicos vivieron con Angra les impone. Pero Shaman logra, desde un primer
momento, dar en el blanco con un sonido original, fresco, por momentos complejo y
experimental, pero siempre con ese toque "especial" presente en todos los temas. Quizs
este disco, insistimos, no sea del agrado de algunos fans del Heavy Metal, y es
comprensible, pues Shaman no busca, con este trabajo, conseguir el agrado de todos y cada
uno de los fans. Lo que busca, desde el primer momento, es una identidad propia. Y vaya
que lo logra, con un trabajo complejo, con un sonido cuya identidad es la heterogeneidad.
Dicen por ah que lo peor que a uno le puede pasar en la vida es convertirse en una copia
de s mismo. Y Shaman, comprendiendo esto a cabalidad, emerge como una fuerza nueva
dentro del mundo del metal.

Debe ser complicado romper con el pasado, con las etiquetas musicales, debe ser por eso
que SHAMAN ha querido mostrarse en Ritual como la alternativa a ANGRA. Andr Matos,
Lus Mariutti y Ricardo Confessori, quizs la parte ms sobresaliente de los ANGRA de hace
unos aos, han asegurado un relativo xito al parecer Ritual la continuacin ms lgica a
un lbum como Holy land. Temas rpidos, meldicos, con percusin tribal y
orquestaciones atrayentes es la esperada respuesta de Matos a Rebirth. Cortes como
Distant thunder, For tomorrow o la genial Time will come volvern a recordar la
energa de antao, aunque un tanto ms comedida. Para muchos este disco ser la
continuacin del legado que comenzaron VIPER y, ms tarde, ANGRA.

And to think I was worried when Angra split up a few years ago! Had I known that it would
result in not one, but two fantastic metal bands, I would have taken the news a whole lot
better. Angra went on to greater heights with the addition of some new blood, most
notably vocalist Edu Falaschi; and the departing members, led by vocalist Andre Matos,
formed Shaman. While I think that the new Angra is the better band (thanks to the truly
amazing Rebirth album), Shaman is also quite excellent. If you enjoyed Angra at all during
Matos's tenure with the band, then you're sure to enjoy Shaman. Their debut CD Ritual is
an excellent offering of Brazilian-influenced power metal. It is reminiscent of the Holy
Land album, which remains my favorite of the Matos-era Angra discs. It has some great
melodies, excellent production (courtesy of the famous Sascha Paeth and Miro), and the
vocals are superb. Andre Matos has one of the most recognizable voices in metal, though
he has often been criticized for singing too high at times. He reins it in a bit on Ritual
though, which gives the album a bit of a harder edge than the old Angra albums had. He
does hit some really high notes on Pride, the albums closer, which might make the listener
cringe a little. Standout tracks on this disc include Distant Thunder and Blind Spell, but all
the songs are quite good. I'd recommend this disc not only to Angra fans, but to any fans of
melodic power metal. If you enjoy bands like Gamma Ray, Helloween, and Freedom Call,
then you owe it to yourself to check out this great debut from Shaman.

We all know the story, so I'll keep this part of the review very short. Main composer Andre
Matos left his own creation, legendary Brazilian heavy metal nad Angra, because of
management problems and diverse bureocratic issues. Fellow musicians Luis Mariutti (bass)
and Ricardo Confessori (drums) joined Matos, and alongside Hugo Mariutti (guitar, Hugos's
brother) they formed Shaman. Angra currently continued to exist, and they shortly
released the Rebirth album, a magnificent display of European heavy metal, but not quite
an Angra album. Shaman was the band to follow if one wanted the same power and
Brazilian influences the old Angra had. But let's get this straight: this is not a band that
copies their old setlist, Ritual is an impressive disc that has obvious influences from Angra's
past catalogue, especially Holy Land, but also shows how these musicians have improved
both technically and in terms of composing. Matos has improved greatly his voice, evolving
far beyond his usual high pitched screams, he now has a much raspier voice, more manly in
many aspects. And new guitarrist Mariutti completes the task of covering two spots, with
killer riffs and acceptable solos (if you want excelent guitar solos, check Angra's Rebirth).
Luis Mariutti and Confessori continue showcasing their best chops, especially the latter (if
you get to see Confessori live you'll realize what I'm talking about).
The songs, are simply excelent. All of them are good. There are usual power metal type
(Here I am, Time Has Come, Pride), more ethnic oriented songs (For Tomorrow, Blind Spell,
Ritual), the usual ballad (Fairy Tale) and many others. I personally liked very much Over
Your Head, Time Will Come and Blind Spell, but all of them are good. Get this and Angra's
Rebirth, and then you'll se who should be carrying the Angra name......
