The consistently popular and warmly Italian Belltown restaurant gains a younger sib later this month. Ethan Stowell opened his original Tavolàta in 2007, now he and Angela Stowell—both his partner in life and in business—are readying a second iteration in Capitol Hill at 501 E Pike St.

With the exception of Ballard Pizza Co., this is the first restaurant echo for Stowell, who says he's “not a young 28-year-old line cook anymore.” The second Tavolàta signals that Stowell is playing the long game, looking to expand one of his most beloved restaurants with staying power and serious mass appeal. Maybe there will be a third location on the Eastside or in Tacoma or...not at all, says Stowell. But for now, the Capitol Hill spot will be the barometer for more potential expansion.

Rest assured, the menu will remain mostly unchanged, so expect those favorite core items,—“People would riot if we took away the pork chop,”—but specials can certainly vary, adds Stowell. It will still rain housemade, extruded pastas of the rigatoni with spicy sausage and spaghetti with anchovy and garlic variety; chef Addam Buzzalini, helming both kitchens, will make sure of that. You can also look forward to small, fresh plates like hamachi crudo with Parma ham, Calabrian chili, and orange.

Named for its long communal table, the new Tavolàta will naturally have one situated in the center of the airy 2,600 square-foot space in the renovated Dunn Automotive Building. Pull up a chair at the 16-foot maple slab, or sit at one of the many tables, booths, bar spots, or counter seats. And record heat be damned, a tentative outdoor patio is already in the works.
