Biography

  • Ivete Sangalo (born May 27, 1972) is a popular Brazilian Latin pop, Bahian, and samba singer-songwriter. Having toured and performed with Banda Eva for six years, Sangalo begun a successful solo career in 1997, hailing from Juazeiro, Bahia, Brazil.

Ivete Sangalo’s earliest musical endeavours came during her time in school where she would regularly sing and play guitar at shows, events and festivals. Following her debut show in Ondina, Salvador in 1992, which earned the singer the revered Dorival Caymmi Award, Sangalo was chosen as the lead singer of the revamped Axé group Banda Eva. The singer released six albums with the group, selling over four-million records and raising her reputation to household status. In 1997 Sangalo went solo, later releasing her debut, self-titled album in 1999. Marked by its Bahian rhythms and seductive lyricism, the record secured double-Platinum certification and a Latin Grammy nomination.

In 2000, Sangalo issued the platinum-selling album “Beat Beleza”, followed by her greatest album success to date, “Festa”, in 2001. The latter album’s title track subsequently became Brazil’s best-selling single of 2001 and featured a spread of Brazilian celebrities in its popular music video. The full-length “Se Eu Nãu te Amasse Tanto Assim” arrived in 2002, followed by “Clube Carnavalesco Innocentes Em Progresso” in 2003, which despite performing poorly in comparison to its predecessors, still achieved Gold certification.

The live album “MTV Ao Vivo - Ivete Sangalo” was released in 2004 becoming the year’s highest selling record, earning Diamond certification and a Latin Grammy Award. Aided by the smash hit single “Sorte Grande”, the accompanying DVD was subsequently certified 3x Diamond, becoming the best-selling musical DVD in Brazil’s history. The triple-Platinum studio album “As Supernovas” appeared in 2005, followed by the live album “Multishow ao Vivo” in 2007, “Veveta e Saulinho - A Casa Amarela” in 2008, and “Pode Entrar: Multishow Registro” in 2009.

Showcasing a performance at New York’s Madison Square Gardens, the live album “Multishow ao Vivo: Ivete Sangalo no Madison Square Garden” was issued in 2011. An album of new material “Real Fantasia” arrived in October 2012, followed two years later by the successful live album “Multishow ao Vivo: Ivete Sangalo 20 Anos”.

Live reviews

  • Ivete Sangalo

One of the biggest ever names to come out of Brazilian music, Ivete Sangalo is a South American legend. She is well known for not just being an entertaining performer vocally, but also a producer, presenter and actress. Even as someone who doesn't understand a word she is saying, I find the songs incredibly catchy. Ivete has been voted 'Best Singer' in the Multishow Award an impressive four times and also won nine times in the same category in various other award ceremonies. She is, without doubt, incredibly talented and successful.

The 42-year-old was one of the headliners at Festival de Verão de Salvador 2014, which was a completely bonkers show. You could already tell it was going to be massive due to the sheer size of the stage and crowds and also the dramatic lighting, which was practically like an electronic dancing rainbow! You could also tell that the audience had huge respect for Ivete as they started screaming and jumping up and down as soon as she appeared on stage. The Brazilian singer looked very glamorous, as did the spark jets around the stage and her band, who were all dressed in suave suits and hats. Tempo De Alegria was my favourite tune of the night. It had an unbelievably catchy hook which I'm still singing in my head as I am writing. Her dancing was also very elegant throughout the song and she done well to get the crowd hyped up – an overall very entertaining performance.

I do advise those from the UK and US to check out this woman online since her gigs won't be easily accessible, but if you do get the chance to see her live it will surely be an unforgettable experience, almost like a carnival within a gig!
