“Squad” member and Missouri Rep. Cori Bush (D) quietly announced her February 2022 wedding to Cortney Merritts, a security guard for Bush’s campaign, via a statement today.

Local reporting says the January 2021 Teen Vogue cover star signed a marriage license on February 11 and then tied the knot in a ceremony a few days later. The relationship wasn’t totally under wraps; a December 2022 Instagram post from the Congresswoman featured the couple at the White House with presumably Merritts’s face covered with an emoji.

“Those who know the Congresswoman personally and have followed her inspiring story know that she is a survivor of multiple forms of violence, including intimate partner violence,” reads the press release announcement from Bush’s office, referring to past experiences Bush has spoken at length about to the media. “That she has married someone who supports her in all that she does, including as Representative of the incredible people of St. Louis, is cause for great celebration.” In the statement, Bush’s chief of staff Abbas Alawieh said the “security professional” has “been Congresswoman Bush’s partner since before her Congressional tenure and is not employed by her Congressional office.”
