Even though we've got all things back-to-school on the brain, summer is still in full swing—which means there's time to make the most of our warm-weather wardrobe and enjoy some serious fun in the sun. Surfwear brand Op hosted a beachy shindig in New York City to celebrate the end of the season, and even though there were no waves in sight, city-dwellers still got to hang ten alongside Katrina Bowden, former star of 30 Rock (and our current inspiration for impossible-to-achieve ocean-kissed waves!).

As an Op spokesmodel, the actress knows a thing or two about this season's style essentials—and how to make them last through autumn. We caught up with the self-proclaimed summer girl to get the scoop on how to look like you've spent the last few months at the beach when you head back to class.

What are your wardrobe must-haves?

I'm pretty casual—a denim shorts and a tank top kind of girl! Anything that's fun, easy to wear, and summery is always good for me. I'm definitely not into all-black and gray outfits, which is a little rare for someone who lives here in New York City.

How to you make that work for fall?

That's when it gets hard! Even when it's cooler outside, I'll still incorporate some pops of color or try to work in some layers. For example, a summer dress with a denim jacket or a little blazer is so cute, and really easy to do. And wearing black tights under your shorts is fun and kind of edgy! Basically, I try to keep wearing my summer clothing for as long as possible—until it looks totally weird!

Since we're gearing up for the new school year, what's your advice for looking cute on campus?

Finding really good-fitting jeans is key. I think of it as a the foundation for a girl's wardrobe! Once you have those, all you need to do is throw on a cool, cute top and some fun accessories. Just remember that comfort is important—at my school, the air conditioning wasn't great, which definitely affected my wardrobe choices!

Jeans are timeless, and so is a great swimsuit! Any tips for finding the perfect one?

As with anything, you've got to go for whatever you feel the most comfortable in, and find the style that works for your body. Personally, I love mixing and matching bikinis to create different looks!
