Now, fans want to know why the show's writers decided to temporarily kill off the beloved canine character, Brian Griffin.
When did Brian Griffin die in Family Guy?
Brian Griffin died during season 12, episode 6 of Family Guy, titled Life of Brian.
The episode premiered on November 24, 2013.
As Screen Rant reported, Brian was run over by a drunk driver while he and Stewie were playing street hockey.
He died "in extreme agony" at the vet’s office, and the family then held a funeral.

The TV show's executive producer, Steve Callaghan, spoke with E! about the decision to kill off Brian.
He said: "Well, this was an idea that got pitched in the writers' room and it sort of caught fire, and we thought it could be a fun way to shake things up.
"As soon as this idea came up, we started talking about what the next couple episodes could be and we got very excited about the way this change will affect the family dynamics and the characters."
Did the Griffins get a new dog?
Following Brian's death, the Griffins got a new dog named Vinny.

Screen Rant states: "Vinny’s arrival completely changed the dynamic of the show. The dog was no longer the voice of reason talking down to Peter; he was a parody of Italian American stereotypes."
After helping Stewie go back in time to save Brian, his timeline was wiped out, which means he never met the family, per Screen Rant.
Brian then returned to the show, much to the delight of fans.
