A zero-gravity chair can take your outdoor lounging experience to the next level. The first time that you climb into one, it might feel like you are falling backward, but once you get used to the weightless feeling, you won't want to leave the chair.

We've tested many zero-gravity chairs over the years, and have recently tested several additional options for over six months as part of our outdoor patio set tests. We then evaluated sets on ease of assembly, design, durability, quality, and value.

Through our testing, we discovered that the material and size of the chairs are the biggest differentiators between the options. Most zero-gravity chairs are made from mesh, polyester, or fabric. Mesh chairs are more breathable and stand up better to rain and snow, so those who live in hot or unpredictable climates should consider it.

Polyester, on the other hand, tends to be more cushioned and comfortable. Therefore, if you plan to spend hours a day lounging in your chair, this may be a better fit.

The right size for you will depend on who is using the chair most. While many options we love can fit a wide range of people, there are also oversized options on the market for taller individuals.

After our testing, we also rounded out our list with some of the top-rated options on the market. Based on our test results and hours of research, here are the best zero-gravity chairs to lay back in and enjoy the outdoors.

What We Like
  • Adjustable neck pillow

  • Compact and portable

  • Durable fabric and frame

  • Several color options

What We Don't Like
  • A little too short for people over 6 feet tall

  • Hard-to-reach locking mechanism

The best overall zero-gravity chair we've tested is the Caravan Canopy Sports Infinity Zero Gravity Chair. We love that it's available in several colors and folds down into a 6-inch form so you can easily take it camping, to the beach, or tailgating (although at 19 pounds, it can be a bit heavy to carry far).

The steel frame can support up to 300 pounds, and the Textilene fabric is designed to withstand the elements, so you won’t have to worry if it gets rained on while you’re traveling. Of course, you can always just lay back and enjoy it in your backyard, and we love that it has an adjustable headrest, so when your guests inevitably ask you for a turn in this comfy chair (which happened to us during testing), they can adjust it via a velcro strap to suit their height. You can also remove the pillow altogether and use it on the chair as lumbar support.

Like all zero-gravity chairs, the fabric is suspended by bungee cords, which reinforces the weightless feeling, and you use your body weight to lean back into your desired position. We loved that this outdoor recliner has a dual-finger locking system, so you can secure it into the position you like, so if you move around, it doesn't move with you.

However, we did find that the lock can be hard to reach if you have shorter arms, but most people shouldn't have much of an issue. We also found that this chair might not be the best size for taller people, as your legs might dangle over the bottom of the chair while you are lying back.

Dimensions: 25 x 4 x 37 inches | Material: Steel frame, fabric | Weight Capacity: 300 pounds | Features: Reclining system, built-in headrest

What We Like
  • Firm and supportive

  • Includes cup holder table

  • Water-resistant fabric

  • Several color choices

What We Don't Like
  • Unreliable locking mechanism

  • Difficult to carry

  • Too short for some people

While testing, we found that the Goplus Zero Gravity Lounge Chair chair offers plenty of extras at an affordable price. In addition to the weightlessness that all zero-gravity chairs offer, we love that it comes with a plastic side tray so you can store essential items, including a phone, magazine, or your favorite book.

It even has two cup holders to keep a beverage handy for you and a friend. Another convenient feature is the moveable shade canopy, so you can stay out of the sun without worrying about opening a patio umbrella or bringing a beach umbrella or hat with you on the go.

We also like that the aluminum and steel frame supports up to 250 pounds. We found the fabric to be water-resistant and didn't retain water during storms (we just had to brush the water off after a rainstorm).

However, we did note a few of the same design quirks we've noticed with other zero-gravity chairs: We liked that it offers a locking mechanism, but we found that it didn't always work properly and keep the chair in place. And although the chair folds flat for storage, we wish it came with a handle so it was easier to carry. Also, it is on the shorter side, so someone taller will find their feet dangling over the bar on the bottom of the chair.

However, we did like the seven different color choices and price, especially since you get shade and a bit of storage with this chair.

  • Cupholders

What We Don't Like
  • Doesn't stay locked

Relax with a friend poolside, on your balcony or deck, camping, or tailgating thanks to the Amazon Basics Zero Gravity Folding Reclining Lounge Chairs. After testing for six months, we found it to be comfortable to lounge in for hours at a time, and loved the adjustable headrest.

While each chair has its own cupholder, this set also comes with a detached table with two more cupholders and space to keep a few small items nearby. We couldn't fit a larger cup in the chair's cupholder, but it did fit snugly in the cupholder on the table, and we could place it on top of the table as well.

At less than $200 for two chairs and a table, we think this set is a great portable option, and found it easy to set up and fold for compact storage. This set is available in multiple colors and has a 300-pound weight capacity. We tested the black set and found that it got warm out in the sun, and the Textilene fabric wasn't as breathable as we had hoped, but it wasn't hot to the touch.

Also, we could never get the locking mechanism to work properly, and the chair moved out of the reclining position we had set each time we moved. However, despite these small issues, we think this is a great budget-friendly set, especially for use in RV camping, sunbathing, or for setting up when you want a place to lounge in your small outdoor space. If you don't need a set or a table, you can buy one chair on its own.

How It Performed Long-Term

After testing these chairs for over six months on a front porch, we have reported no issues in either their appearance or performance. We still find them to be just as comfortable and great for tailgating or camping or if you need a space-saving seating option on your porch or patio.

While they've withstood light rain and a ton of direct sun, we do store these chairs indoors when not in use. They're extremely easy to fold and store with minimal space. Because of this, we think they're best for camping or tailgating rather than leaving out in your backyard permanently.

However, after several people tried out the locking mechanism, we still found that it doesn't lock properly, but the chair doesn't move if you sit still, so it's not that much of an issue.

Dimensions: 26 x 41.14 x 29.76 | Material: Steel frame, textilene fabric | Weight Capacity: 300 pounds | Features: Reclining system, removable headrest, cup holder in each chair, table with two cup holder

What We Like
  • Detachable tray with multiple compartments

  • Removable headrest

  • Affordable set

  • Available in 20 different colors

What We Don't Like
  • Brackets and bungees may wear down over time

Similar to our best set, the Best Choice Products Adjustable Zero Gravity Lounge Chairs come in a set of two at an affordable price. Although this set doesn't come with a table, each chair has its own removable tray with two cupholders and multiple slots designed for a phone and a tablet or book.

It also has a removable headrest that can be adjusted each time a new person uses the chair. These chairs are also available in over 20 different colors, and at this budget-friendly price, they would make a great housewarming gift for a friend or family member.

Like many of the zero-gravity chairs on this list, the chair is made of textilene fabric that is water-resistant, easy to clean, and does not get too hot in the sun. The rust-proof, heavy-duty steel frame can support up to 250 pounds but only weighs around 16 pounds, so it's not too cumbersome to bring to tailgates, camping, or the beach.

You can also lock your position while reclining in the chair by turning the knobs on the side. The bungee and bracket system used to support the chair seats may deteriorate over time, especially if left out in heavy rain and snow. We recommend storing these chairs in a cool, dry place during colder months or using an outdoor furniture cover to avoid premature wear and tear.

Dimensions: 44 x 32.5 x 25 inches | Material: Steel frame, mesh | Weight Capacity: 250 pounds | Features: Reclining system, built-in headrest, cup holder tray

What We Like
  • 33.5-inch seat width

  • 500-pound weight capacity

  • Padded seating

  • Larger wooden armrests

What We Don't Like
  • Heavy to carry

  • Not as easy to store as other options

If you are looking for a roomy, extra-wide option, we love the Coastrail Outdoor Oversized Zero Gravity Chair. It has a 33.5-seat width and a 500-pound weight capacity, both the largest on this list.

While we did not personally test this option, we were impressed with the polyester seat that's padded for extra comfort and the wooden armrests, which are wider than other options. It also features a powder-coated, rust-resistant steel frame to help withstand the elements and is available in multiple colors.

Like many of the options on this list, the Coastrail Outdoor Oversized chair comes with a detachable cup holder tray with slots for a phone and table and a detachable, adjustable headrest. You can also select the reclining or sitting position you like and lock it into place with a pin so it doesn't move with you.

At just over 25 pounds, this chair is heavier to carry than most options on this list and also takes up more space in storage or a trunk, but we think it's a great option if you are looking for a durable and larger chair for your patio or deck, or on the go.

Dimensions: 44.1 x 33.2 x 21.6 inches | Material: Powder-coated steel frame, polyester fabric | Weight Capacity: 500 pounds | Features: Reclining system, built-in headrest, cup holder tray

What We Like
  • Mold, mildew, and fade resistant

  • High weight capacity

  • Holds desired reclining level

What We Don't Like
  • Heavy

  • Type of metal not specified

This Freeport Park Zero Gravity Chair is our recommendation for anyone looking for some extra cushioning and an especially comfortable chair that you can fold up and take anywhere. It's one of the heaviest chairs we recommend, but that's largely due to its especially robust construction. Freeport Park doesn't specify what type of metal they use, but the all-metal frame is both heavy and durable.

We didn't test this chair, but we had to recommend it as an especially comfortable option for anyone looking for one. The seat is one of the largest on this list, at 33 inches wide and an impressive 30 inches deep. It invites you to slide all the way back and relax with a good book and a drink in the convenient cupholder.

The removable pleated seat cushion is a plush 3.5 inches thick, and it includes large cushions for your head and back as well. The cushions are resistant to mold, mildew, and fading, and they're also removable, so you can pull them off when they aren't in use. The locking mechanism works flawlessly as well, so you can securely lock yourself in place when you find your ideal reclining angle.

Dimensions: 45 x 33 x 30 inches | Material: Metal, polyester, cotton | Weight Capacity: 500 pounds | Features: Reclining system, removable cushion padding, headrest, cup holder

Final Verdict

Our best overall pick is the Caravan Canopy Sports Infinity Zero Gravity Chair because it is available in several different colors, has a 300-pound weight capacity, and folds down easily so you can throw it in the trunk and take it with you on vacation or store it when not in use. If you are looking for a budget-friendly set, we love the Amazon Basics Zero Gravity Folding Reclining Lounge Chairs. Each comfortable chair features a cup holder and a table with additional cup holders, so you can set up a relaxing lounge area tailgating, camping, or in your own backyard.

Other Options We Tested

Sunjoy Zero-Gravity Chair: We originally tested this chair and picked it as our best overall because it was comfortable, lightweight, and durable. We thought it was easy to set up and use, and enjoyed the removable head pillow, although we noted that it wasn't the best option for taller users.

During our recent round of testing, we made the same observations, however, this time, we found that it didn't hold up as well during inclement weather and developed rust spots in a few places after it was exposed to rain. It also arrived already damaged and had some noticeable defects with the construction. As long as it arrives in perfect condition, we still think it's a good option to use on covered porches or for use outside as long as you store it when not in use.

How We Tested the Zero-Gravity Chairs

We originally tested several zero-gravity chairs at our own homes across the country and evaluated them on a variety of factors.

  • Assembly: When the chairs arrived on our doorsteps, we unboxed them and set them up in our own backyards, noting how long the assembly process took (zero-gravity chairs typically require no or little assembly).
  • Comfort: We then sat in the chairs for several hours, noting how comfortable they felt. In most cases, we had several friends and family members use the chairs as well to see how comfortable they were for people of different sizes.
  • Weather-Resistance: We noted how well these chairs held up and whether they experienced weather damage or wear and tear.

We also checked in after six months to see how well the chairs held up during prolonged use and different types of weather.

What to Look For in a Zero-Gravity Chair

Material

While all zero-gravity chairs are designed with comfort in mind, some are more comfortable than others. Comfort largely depends on the material a chair is made from either Textilene mesh or polyester.

  • Mesh chairs tend to be breathable, avoiding the sticky sensation you might feel on bare skin when the material absorbs the sun's heat. textilene also is more weather-resistant than polyester and should stand up better to rain if left outside. Textilene mesh chairs typically also cost less than polyester chairs. For example, our best budget option, the Best Choice Products Adjustable Zero Gravity Patio Chairs, is a budget-friendly two-pack with textilene fabric.
  • Polyester or fabric chairs, like our best oversized pick, the Coastrail Outdoor Zero Gravity Chair, are just about everything Textilene chairs are not: They can feel sweatier, can be more vulnerable to bad weather, and cost more than Textilene chairs. However, the polyester fabric can be padded, making the overall feel worth the extra amount.

Features

Some zero-gravity chairs also come with extras such as canopies to shade you from the sun, like the Goplus Zero Gravity Lounge Chair with Shade Canopy, our best with canopy pick.

Others come complete with attachable tray tables to hold your beverages. Our best set pick, the Amazon Basics Zero Gravity Folding Reclining Lounge Chairs, takes its features a step further with an included foldable table complete with two cup holders.

Most chairs, including our best overall pick, the Caravan Canopy Sports Infinity Zero Gravity Chair, have an adjustable headrest that lets each individual adjust the chair for optimal comfort.

Size

Make sure your chair fits well in your space—but also make sure you fit well in the chair as well as anyone else who might use it. Many zero-gravity chairs are adjustable and fit people of different builds, but those who are on the taller or shorter side should double-check the length of the chair to find one that is comfortable for them.

Be sure also to check the weight limit of your zero gravity chair to ensure that your pieces last as long as possible and feel comfortable for anyone who is planning to use it. Luckily, many chairs on the market have a high weight capacity. Our best oversized option, the Coastrail Outdoor Oversized Zero Gravity Chair has the largest weight capacity on this list at 500 pounds and an extra-wide seat.

The lowest weight capacity we recommend is 250 pounds, seen on options like our best budget pick, the Best Choice Products Adjustable Zero Gravity Patio Chairs. In this case, the chair itself weighs just 16 pounds, so you sacrifice a bit of the weight capacity for a lightweight, easy-to-transport chair.

FAQ
  • What does a zero-gravity chair do?

A zero-gravity chair makes you feel as weightless as an astronaut. It can help to increase blood flow, decrease swelling, and take pressure off your joints and spine.

  • Do zero-gravity chairs lay flat?

Zero-gravity chairs are based on NASA’s research into reducing stress on astronauts’ bodies during takeoff and its concept of a neutral body posture (NBP), the natural posture that astronauts assume in a microgravity environment such as a spaceship. You can use zero-gravity chairs in a range of positions, from upright to reclined. The purpose of the zero-gravity chair is to allow you to recline with your feet above your heart, rather than lying flat, as on a bed, massage table, or floor. Lightweight, portable, zero-gravity chairs can fold up flat for easy storage.

  • What do zero-gravity chairs weigh?

You can find a range of zero-gravity chairs in varying weights, from light, compact models to padded versions designed to support heavier users. Generally, lightweight fold-up zero-gravity chairs weigh from 15 to 30 pounds, while stationary zero-gravity massage chairs can weigh hundreds of pounds. If you plan on carting your zero-gravity chair to a camping spot, opt for one with an aluminum or aluminum-alloy frame, which would weigh less than a steel frame.
