Burberry is facing questions over its future after its highly rated Italian boss was poached by a rival luxury house.

Marco Gobbetti, 61, surprised colleagues and the industry yesterday with plans to leave the brand at the end of the year. He is to become chief executive of Salvatore Ferragamo, the Florentine designer known for its shoes worn by Hollywood stars such as Audrey Hepburn. Gobbetti led the luxury groups Celine, Givenchy and Moschino before joining Burberry in 2017. He had been expected to stay for another 12 to 18 months.

He has been away from Italy for almost 20 years and Burberry said it respected his desire to return but was disappointed because he had made an “immense contribution”.
