Aquileia

The greatness of Aquileia is revealed by its archaeological heritage
Aquileia holds a very rich legacy, the tangible evidence of a city that was one of the wealthiest capitals of the Roman Empire.

UNESCO site

A UNESCO site since 1998, Aquileia features an archaeological area of extraordinary significance. The perfect itinerary should start at the National Archaeological Museum and then proceed to the remains of the Roman forum, the necropolis (burial ground), the imposing structures of the ancient river port as well as the private dwellings decorated with mosaic floors, including Domus di Tito Macro: one of the largest Roman residences discovered in northern Italy. 1700 square metres chronicle what life was like in a household in the ancient city.

This is followed by a stop at the magnificent Basilica of the Assumption of Saint Mary, which dates back to the 4th century and is home to the largest floor mosaic of the Western Christian world. Another highlight is the National Early Christian Museum, which is remarkable for its architectural layout and the artefacts on display.
