Municipality of Barete

We publish the speech of Leonardo Gattuso, mayor of Barete, in Abruzzo, where the free hotspots have been activated and that is added to the Municipalities that have joined the Project Wifi Italy.

"The town of Barete is located in the Abruzzo hinterland not far from the border with Lazio. The village is located 800 meters high in a gorge at the northern edge of the basin L'Aquila, in the high valley of the Aterno, between the river Aterno and the Gran Sasso d'Italia. The resort, formerly known as Lavaretum, was a holiday resort for the inhabitants of the Sabina city of Amiternum for the presence of some hot springs. In the thirteenth century took part, along with the other castles of the countryside, the foundation of L'Aquila; the role of the country was particularly important because the Baretani were assigned the defense of the western end of the walls of Aquila where, at the end of the century, was built Porta Barete.

Visitors, besides enjoying the nature of the Gran Sasso National Park, can visit the primary church of Barete, San Paolo al cimitero, whose castellani built the homonymous temple in the city founded in L'Aquila in 1254, along the current Via Roma in the Quarto San Pietro, on board with Porta Barete.

The church dates back to the sixth century, erected in an ostrogothic lombard cemetery, as shown by some decorations and finds at the cemetery.
For a small center like Barete to be part of the Project Wifi Italy is a great opportunity to achieve a dual objective: enhance the beauty of the place and the work that the municipal administration puts in place for citizens".
