A Symbol of Sicily’s Golden Age

Vinous recently proclaimed it: “Sicily is going through a Golden Age.”

They’re right on the money—and if you want proof of this newfound glory, we’d point you directly to Nicosia’s Sabbie di Sutta Frappato.

The Frappato grape has been planted in Sicily for ages, but existed almost exclusively as a blending grape for the island’s only DOCG wine, Cerasuolo di Vittoria. Over the last few decades, though, a set of ambitious producers have realized Frappato’s potential to create wines that embody the word “charming.”

Nicosia was founded in 1898, and the accumulated wisdom passed down over the generations has led to an enviable collection of vineyards. For this Frappato, they tap sites in Vittoria—the home of the grape, on the coastal edge of the southeastern corner of the island.

The sandy soils of the area encourage roots to grow deep, seeking water, while breezes off the Mediterranean sea moderate temperatures and allow for a longer growing season. Nicosia farms their sites organically, and ferments their grapes in stainless steel tanks to emphasize the fresh nature of the wine.

Vinous described the 2021 Sabbie di Sutta as “a pure and fruity Frappato at its best,” which means it's basically impossible not to smile while drinking it. Few wines are as purely delicious—and as food friendly. With a medium-light body, a vibrant palate highlighted by juicy fruit, a hint of herbs, and a finish that both quenches thirst and demands another sip, it’s perfect with charcuterie, nearly any cheese, or even grilled fish.
